LE T TE R O F INTENTION

My ambition is to become a freelance CG generalist with a strong focus on design and visual development, and being able to work on projects, whether it being animation, games, VFX or commercials, and maybe one day build up my own studio.

My name is Kristian Bonne, I am 23 years old and this is my third application for the Computer Graphics Art Bachelor programme. I have applied for CGA in 2012 and 2013 also.

This past year I have focused on getting a lot more into different styles, and broadening my perspective on references and artists. I still get inspired a lot by Ralph McqQuarrie for his amazing moods and H.R. Giger for his extraordinary and provocative designs, but lately I have been much more inspired by artist like Paul Felix, Ronald Searle, Maurice Noble, Jim Flora and Norman Rockwell, for their ability to tell strong stories with the simplest means.

I have always been somewhat of a dreamer. In a cynical, yet weirdly romantic way you could say that I often find reality too boring. Ridley Scott’s Alien from 1979 is one of my favourite movies. I am very inspired by how the story is told in a future high-tech universe, but that all the sets are so “low-fi”, crude and mechanical. This, along with H.R. Giger’s vulgar design of the Alien environment, created such an amazing contrast in the world, that it was hard not to get intrigued. Among Alien, science fiction and fantasy movies like the old Star Wars trilogy sparked my motivation for wanting to create worlds and tell stories ever since I was kid. As I grew older my favourite movies started including some of Tarrentino’s works like Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained, Pixar’s Wall-E and Up, and Miyazaki’s Spirited Away. In games, The Mass Effect series and the Elder Scrolls Skyrim have been some of my favourites.

For the last 3 years, I have been running my own freelance business, doing mostly presentation films and motion graphics. I have been used to doing everything from preproduction to postproduction to editing and sound design. This has given me a lot of experience in handling deadlines, seeing productions through from start to finish, and problem solving whatever problem you inevitably will encounter. The Adobe package has been my weapon of choice since I was educated in Multimedia Design in 2012, along with Blender 3D and lately autodesk Maya. I did a semester in classical drawing at The Drawing Academy in fall 2012 with Mads Peter Brandstrup as my teacher. Mads taught me a very valuable lesson in understanding the form all the way through, instead of just projecting what was in front of me. This principle keeps affecting the way I draw and paint today.

For the Past 8 months I have been in The Open Workshop doing self-studies and preparing my new portfolio. Self-studies can be a tough challenge and it became clear to me that I needed a strategy in order to keeping moving forward the way I did at TDA. So I came up with the idea of a personal IP project that would focus on one of my core motivations for becoming a CG artist: Building worlds and developing stories. The next thing I needed was actual deadlines and someone else’s feedback and expectations for my work, so I decided to sign up for online classes at CGMA(http://2d.cgmasteracademy.com/). I did “Fundamentals for Creative Environment Design” with Jason Scheier and Iuri Lioi from Dreamworks, “Character Illustration for Film and Games” with Björn Hurri from Opus Artz and “Character Design for Animation” with Nate Wragg from Pixar/Dreamworks. With a combination of lectures and homework from both courses, and my own world development on the side, I had created my own ideal personal learning project. The Open Workshop proved to be much more than just a place to study and work on my portfolio - it became a second home. Tim Leborgne and Per Kristensen have been very supportive with both advice, material and lectures from external teachers. One of these teachers, Lawrence Marvit, became a key person in my development. Lawrence taught me the difference between a pretty drawing and a character with personality and story.

Especially Cédric Babouche who almost gave me a private lecture on the way to Billund about developing personality and character when designing, and Brynn Metheney who gave me a huge amount of tips on building a strong freelance career. Last summer I did my first lone road trip down through Europe. This was a big personal challenge for me as I have always been used to travelling with friends and family. I spent most of my trip driving around northern Italy, visiting small towns. This trip has been one of the most significant experiences for me, not just because the trip in itself was such a nice experience, but mostly because it taught me how independent I am as an individual. My experiences over the last year have had a great impact on the way I think about art. For me there is no longer any right or wrong way to do things. There is no story without potential and there certainly never has to be one approach, one style or one framework for how to do “good” animation. The most significant stories might come from the most insignificant experiences. Best Regards, Kristian Kildsgaard Bonne Jensen

Along with my stay at the Open Workshop, I have been working as a student driver for the school. I have had the fortune of meeting some of the most amazing artists who already do what I dream of doing.

BACKGROUNDS

The following background-/environment paintings are a part of my personal IP Project(p. 14 -19). The universe is a mixture of prehistoric/pre-Columbian time periods. Technologically advanced tribes inhabit the world and are challenged in their everyday life by the monstrous Avisauruses, who also play an important part in the coming-of-age rituals. One of the most advanced tribes discovers the means of travelling through time and space. They mysteriously vanish, leaving only a few clues behind, to be found by a group of architects in the 21st century.
