History of the New Forest Pony…. The New Forest Pony is a recognized British Isles breed but has an unusual background for a native pony breed. The earliest record of horses in the New Forest dates back to 1016 when rights of common pasture were granted to the people living in what was a royal hunting ground. Since then, either as specific attempts to improve the breed or just as part of the normal life and trade in the New Forest, many outside breeds were introduced. Notable blood lines were Welsh, Thoroughbred, Arab and Hackney. Later, another concerted effort was made to improve the New Forest blood and other British Isles pony blood-lines were introduced to achieve this, including Fell Ponies, Dales, Highlands, Dartmoor and Exmoor.

The New Forest Pony… a true all-rounder… The New Forest ponies most endearing quality is their inbred, gentle nature. Their calm temperament naturally recommends them as an excellent choice and an ideal mount for both children and adults. They have long been raced locally and are surprisingly fast, especially over rough terrain. They are suited to many competitive activities from Pony Club to polo, driving to dressage, they are naturals at jumping and gymkhana and are successfully trained to carry handicapped riders.
Photo by: Venderers of the New Forest
All in all, the modern New Forest Pony is an exceptional all-rounder with an endearing character, that has developed as a result of both its unique environment and strong association with the people who have been responsible for the development of the breed. Photo by: Graham Cooper

origin of the Welsh Mountain Pony is not clear. It is believed that during Roman times horses of eastern origin were crossed with native Welsh stock. During the 18th century Thoroughbred, Arabian and Barb blood was introduced. The eastern influence can be seen in the beautiful head, the dished profile and the big eyes and nostrils. The Welsh Mountain Pony was used for shepherding and hunting. It has lived in the harsh rugged landscape of Wales for may centuries and forms the base of all Welsh Ponies. The Welsh Mountain Pony, considered by many to be the most beautiful pony, is able to thrive in harsh weather conditions and on meagre rations. It has been used to improve the New Forest and the British Riding Pony. The breed is popular in many countries and has been exported to the United States, Europe, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Man With A Vision
“A good campdrafter is not just a fine horseman, but has the skill to select a suitable beast from the mob that will run well”. Quietly spoken, down to earth, Brad Baker is a horseman of many talents.......versatility is just second nature. When he is not down on his parent’s property (Dunbible Creek) in Murwillumbah with his many horses, he is off travelling the countryside competing in campdrafts and stockhorse events. Then, as a side line, the man rides Saddle Broncs at rodeos! These days Brad works at the Australian Outback Spectacular as a stockman, roman rider and plays multiple roles as the characters Jim, Bill and Sergeant in the show. Brad can remember being in the saddle from a young age of 5 and from the age of 8, Brad with his parents, Trevor and Sandra Baker would travel the countryside attending many shows, taking out 3 NSW Titles, 2 Zone Titles and ranking 5th in the ACA Aust Title. Brad says “I am forever in debt to my father he is my mentor, he has been my support and taught me so much, he has been by my side every step of the way”. As a senior rider, Brad’s highlight is success with his hightly talented Stock/Quarter Horse Stallion “Dun BC Acreslad”. Brad said he is a “Natural Athlete” and the horse just wants to do it. Brad bred Acreslad, broke him in and he is now a Champion taking out the 2009 Beaudesert Stockman’s Challenge, Champion Two Handed Cutting at Graftons Stockhorse Championships, Highest cut out score in the Novice draft at Tabulum, plus numerous Champion Led hack and working stock horse classes throughout Northern NSW and SE Queensland. Brad said “its self satisfaction to see the results”
Hints and Tips for Beginners – From Brad Baker If there is one tip I could give, it would be, “always go to people that have achieved more than you. I have learnt a lot by doing this thanks to Kevin Johnston who always offers advice, everything he has told me has worked. He has switched me on and changed a lot of my style and the way I attack – listen to what they say and do it!” • Find a horse that is already going and can come back to your level. A going horse is going to help you learn faster. • Always warm up your horse before your run. eg Canter the course also by taking cattle back or canter a few circles out the back. • At least 10 to 15 runs before your run go to the yard and start looking at the cattle. If you’re not sure on picking your cattle find someone with experience that will, don’t be afraid to ask the right person. • Always have three cattle picked out before your run. When I’m in the yard waiting for my run I like to ride to the eye of the three cattle that I have picked to see which one turns away from my horse best. • When the judge tells me I can start I like to be able to move the beast out to the side at the back of the yard from the mob, so then I can step in to my cow at the right time so I can bring it up singly. I am a big believer in taking the beast you have selected to the front of the yard by itself. Which is not easy to do, it will take time, patience and practice. If you have cattle at home you can work on doing this and remember you can never stop learning. Where does Brad see himself in the future? He would like to start a breeding program and at the end of the day have a good line of horses.

I got Bon-Bon when I was 6 & learnt to ride on her after starting on my mother's stock horse gelding, I even took Bonnie to campdraft training even though she was smaller then most of the steers we were tracking. Then I progressed to Angel when I was 9 after riding another QH briefly. I started riding Matchmaker in May 2009 & since then I have done quite a few campdrafts. My first run was at Boonah last year. I also do cattle & horsemanship clinics. Cutting has helped me with cattle work & saddle time & the club is really great. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RIDING? I started riding when I was about 5 & when I got Bonnie for Xmas the next year I learnt in the round yard at home before starting pony club at The Oaks in Sydney. I have learnt a lot since I began riding Match as she is such a well trained cow horse that she teaches me as well as looking after me. Kevin McNab riding Kelecyn Divergence Photo by Main Event Photography
With Kevin McNab
Firstly I would like to introduce myself and the team. My name is Kevin McNab and I have an eventing and sale yard based in Tamborine. I live on a fifty acre property and have around 40 horses in work at any one time and have a further 20 horses including brood mares, yearlings, 2 year olds and 3 year olds. And some of them are very kindly eating the grass down at the neighbors place! I have 3 full time riders that work with me, Emma Dougall, Charlotte Price and Courtney Hallinan and a team of grooms and ever helping hands on deck. I’ve been eventing now for more than 15 years and over the years. I’ve had many experiences and I’ve made a lot of mistakes and learnt from them, as well as learning a lot from those around me including my fellow competitors and the many different trainers I’ve had the privilege to receive help from. In this section my aim is to give you a small insight in to the sport of eventing. Before heading out to your first competition make sure you are prepared for it. Make sure you are going well at home with your horses before you take them out to a competition. A few simple things to cover before your first competition: 1. Run through your dressage test, and if possible a few dressage days would not hurt. 2. Cross country schooling, introduce your horse to the basic fences you will see in an intro course (do not enter the pre novice!!) 3. Go to a couple of small show jumping days so your horse has seen some different types of fill. 4. Don’t be afraid to ask a professional for a couple of lessons or for some advice on any problems that may arise.
The Competition Day: 1. Dressage Get there with plenty of time to find your dressage arena. Warm up and watch a couple of horses in the arena prior to your test. After presenting to your judge you have sixty seconds to enter the arena at A. This may not sound like much time but as long as you don’t dawdle you will be fine.
Kevin McNab Riding Kinnordy Galera (Photo Main Event Photography)
2. Cross country (my favorite part) Walk the course a couple of times and if you have any queries regarding the jumps or terrain, ask a more experienced or professional rider for help. Make sure that you allow yourself enough time to work your horse down in case the atmosphere affects him. This is your first event so if you don’t make the time that is OK.
Kevin McNab Riding Game Play
3. Show jumping This is usually the last phase of the event. Each horse is different but a 20 minute warm up is usually adequate. Walk the course and step out the lines so you know how many strides to put in between each combination. Have the horse that you are riding in mind as you make these decisions. It is good to have a plan when you enter the ring but always be prepared to adjust the plan if needed.
Kevin McNab Riding Game Play
“You are only as good as your best horse so management and care is essential for a long and successful career”.

By Linda Parelli
by Linda Parelli
Photo by Coco In this issue Linda Parelli offers advice on how to develop a bond with your horse. I have just bought a new horse and want to make sure I develop a good bond and relationship with him – can Parelli techniques help? Mary James. This is a wonderful thought - your horse will really appreciate it! Horses don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care, but befriending horses is often unsuccessful because we are two completely different species... horses are prey animals and people are predators. A human is not something a horse would go out of his way to be friends with and yet the relationship we’ve shared with them for thousands of years is quite extraordinary, if not always fun for the horse. When you are able to overcome the prey-predator barrier your horse’s confidence will soar, making him more responsive and safer to be around. Think of it this way... horses don’t bite or kick people they like and trust! The Prey-Predator Barrier When horses get scared, they’re not afraid you’re going to hurt them, they’re afraid you are going to kill them. It doesn’t seem logical to us, but prey animals are ‘programmed’ that way. They’ve survived for millions of years by reacting faster than, out-thinking, outsmarting and out-running predators. So when it comes to the horse-human relationship, even if you are a vegetarian, you are still a predator species and your horse knows it. The reason we make such a big deal about this is because many people tend to get mad or frustrated when their horse misbehaves, but often they have no idea what is driving that behavior. For many horses it is mortal fear that is making them bolt, rear, bite, kick, prance, head-shake, buck, not stand still, spook, shy, etc., and when the human gets annoyed it throws fuel on the fire. The horse is already scared, they have a predator on their back and now that predator is mad... or scared. Either way, the feeling that is transmitted to the horse scares the life out of him.

One of the first things Parelli students learn is to not blame their horse for how he’s behaving and to take control of their own emotions. You have to get calm and objective. Then you need to know what to do to convince your horse that even though you look and smell like a predator, you would never act like one.
How to create a bond with your horse Cont……..
Here are some ways you can prove this: Never punish your horse because prey animals do not understand punishment. They live in the moment and they react to their feelings about a situation and then behave as their instincts tell them to. Here’s what to do: say to yourself “How interesting!” and then think about what may be causing him to act this way. More on this in the next section. Never tie his head down with draw reins or martingales. There is a reason that head comes up and you need to find out what it is. Horses don’t resist for no good reason. Never strap his mouth shut. As above. Never yank on the reins or hold them so tight that he feels no way out. Horses are naturally very claustrophobic so they fight to get free. There is a natural way to collect horses on shorter reins and there are far better ways to control a horse than pulling back on the reins. Never trick him by hiding your halter behind your back or using treats to lure him into places he doesn’t want to go. Your relationship has to be based on trust. Patience, patience, patience. When your horse doesn’t do what you want right away, calmly and sensitively repeat it and repeat it and repeat it until your horse is calm... or change your strategy in case you weren’t being very clear. Pat Parelli says it best when he quips “You’re doing great... I’ve never seen it take longer than two days!” If you adopt the two day attitude you’ll slow down, be less intense and your horse will feel a lot better! Look first at yourself. A good teacher blames himself before he blames his student and knows that it’s devastating to the learning process for his student to feel fear. Not many people are naturally patient, but horses can teach you this. By breaking things down into simple steps and giving your horse time to think and pause for a moment after he does something right. This develops confidence like you can’t believe and some horses need a lot more waiting time than others before they can relax. You are your horse’s teacher and many horses come to school confused, worried, sometimes terrified. Learn the Parelli Seven Games. By studying horses Pat Parelli observed seven distinct games they play with each other to establish friendship and dominance. He adapted them so humans could use them to establish successful relationships with horses, starting on the ground and moving on from there. These Seven Games are so powerful they go straight to the psyche of the horse quickly breaking down the fear barrier... provided an attitude of love and understanding is used. If not, they’ll go through the motions but hold on to their primitive fear. When a horse doesn’t want to be with people or he’s always tense, you need to spend a lot of undemanding time with him, just hanging out with him like his horse buddies do. Horses that are acting out of self defense feel that everything is pressure... catching, leading, saddling, bridling, lunging, riding. In order to get him to let down and relax around you, you need to spend a lot of undemanding time with him and gradually start asking him to do things, in fact, your horse will probably start wanting to play with you. That’s when you’ll know he’s ready. And if you have a more confident horse who is already looking for action, start playing with him right away and think about ways you can keep it fun.

Ashling Polo Tournament Beaudesert
What an Atmosphere! One of the fastest, roughest and most dangerous games played today. The stamina and athletic ability of the players and their horses is second to none. “Mate against Mate” as they play for the Title. Ashling Polo located at 100 Bromelton House Road Beaudsert's annual 4 and 10 Goal event held in early Spring is one of the "must attend" polo events on the QLD calendar. Ashling is owned and run by Glen and Juliette Wright and each year they openly invite teams from all over Australia to enter a team in this very popular polo event.
4 Goal Final One of the most exciting, on the edge of your seat games of the weekend, This was a game where the riders played and worked as a team, Robby Ballard played an incredible game, his ability to read the game, his athletic and acrobatic skill, had us all wanting more.
Subsidiary Final
7 goals to 4 with Scanlan taking the 4 goal title
TEAMS – 4 Goal Scanlan Polo
10 Goal Final The pinnacle of finals, this final had it all. Custodian took the early lead with Wastecorp just hanging in, clawing back chukka by chukka. From the onset, no one would have thought that Wastecorp were going to come back and challenge Custodian as they did… with the final horn tolling the score was locked 9 all. The game then went into extra time, it was do or die for all. A penalty shot was awarded to Custodian, Craig Wilson on one of his favourite greys, lined up and hammered the ball home for a super win to the Custodian Team… Final Score 10-9

Article By: Queensland Polo Association Queensland’s Polo playing season is very dependant on weather, usually starting in March and continuing through the cooler months to October annually avoiding the wet season in Qld and the hotter months. Each of the Qld clubs hold a variety of tournaments during the year with practice chukkas on a regular basis. The Queensland Polo Association has 7 affiliated clubs, they are; Biddaddaba Creek Polo Club, Brisbane Polo Club Inc, Downs Polo Club Inc, Gold Coast Polo Club Inc, Gympie and Mary Valley Polo Club (Sunshine Coast Polo Club), Maleny Polo Club and South East Qld Polo Club. If you are new to the sport of polo and would like to learn how to play polo many of our clubs hold coaching clinics during the year accommodating beginners to advanced players. You can even hire horses and purchase ‘Trial Memberships’ for a minimal fee which provides you a 28 day membership giving you ample time to discover the ‘excitement’ of polo. If, after the 28 day trial, you want to continue to play Polo, as many of our Trial Members do, you can then upgrade your membership to either a Senior Playing annual member or Junior Playing annual member only paying the remainder of the membership fee. It is compulsory to hold a playing membership from an affiliated club if you intend to play polo in Australia as this covers the player for Public Liability Insurance on receipt of payment.
The QLD Polo Association have an online membership registration system which gives clubs and members the ability to view their membership status online and to update details at any time. Your memberships are activated instantaneously. Polo is played in 5 States in Australia: QLD, NSW, SA, VIC & WA. There are approximately 50 Clubs throughout Australia, each club affiliated to their State Polo Association overseen by the Australian Polo Council. In the scheme of equestrian sports Polo is known to be the King Of Sports. Polo is an equine sport designed to be fast, skilful, social and entertaining. The Polo field length varies between a maximum of 275 metres and a minimum of 230 metres. The width also can vary between a maximum of 180 metres unboarded & 150 metres boarded. Polo is played with two teams usually with 4 players a side. The game is divided into 6 or 4 periods called ‘chukkas’ each lasting 7 minutes with a 30 second overtime available.
Polo is played with a ball and each player on horse back has a ‘mallet’ to hit the ball. Players play off ‘Handicaps’. All registered players in Australia are rated on a scale of –2 to 10 (the higher the better). The handicap of the team is the sum total rating of its players and their handicaps. Players usually start on a -2 Handicap depending on their ability. Each of the four team members plays a noticeably different position. Since polo is such a flowing game, the players may briefly change positions but usually return to their initial position. No 1 is the most forward offensive player. No 2 is just as offensive but plays deeper and works harder. No 3 is the pivot player between offence and defence and tries to turn all plays to offence. No 4 or the Back is a defensive player whose role is principally to protect the goal. Any time a ball crosses the line between the goal posts it is considered a goal regardless of whether a horse or a mallet causes the ball to go through. The teams change ends after every goal scored. The team that scores the most goals wins. The fundamental nature of the Polo is teamwork. September this year Logan Village Riding Club hosted their first Masters Equestrian Games. President, Sarah Craddock was overwhelmed with the response and feedback from competitors and spectators. So much so that the event will be hosted next year in May (date to be confirmed). In addition to the Dressage, Showjumping and Sporting Events, the club endeavors to add Hacking and Cross Country to the program. Competitors were aged from 35 years to over 70 years and travelled down from Toowoomba, Caboolture and the local surrounding area. From a Rider‟s perspective, what an absolutely fantastic weekend! The general atmosphere was charged with camaraderie with a slight hint of competitiveness of course! Catching up with „old‟ faces, reminiscing and just plain enjoying yourself. For some competitors, it was their first time “stepping out” in competition for quite some time, but the fact that we were in our own “age element” made it “the more the merrier”. Saturday evening was the Dressage Award Presentations and Dinner. The night was well attended and a huge success. The overall Team challenge for the weekend was awarded to “Jimboomba Cougars” who competed in all three disciplines in the true spirit of the Masters!! Good work TEAM Logan Village Riding Club…. He is 14.1hh, but looks bigger as he is very solid. Taffy has a loving nature & funny personality. DISCIPLINES: Trail Riding, Show Jumping, some Dressage & Pony Club.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD THIS HORSE? 3 ½ years HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RIDING? All my life and have been seriously riding for roughly 6 years. HIGHLIGHTS: The Beaudesert charity trail ride of 2007, with all the staff from Tamborine Mt Trail Rides. I love mucking around & playing with Taffy & my horsey friends. GOALS:
To take Taffy in more jumping classes & shows. Also to keep improving my riding skills & knowledge about horses to possibly become a vet.
COACHING: I have had people with horse sense around me all my life & have gained most of my horse skills of my mum & dad. Susie Cooper has been my riding/jumping coach for over 4 years & has taught me a lot, she teaches me something new each time I see her. I have also learned a lot off Jeannie Maher, owner of Wynmah pony stud. MY FAVOURITE THING ABOUT RIDING:
Is the bond you build with a horse!

Keep your eye on this spot monthly, to find new trail riding area’s Hi my name is Graeme Sleeman and I have been invited to provide you with information on the activity of Trail Horse Riding. Trail Riding is one of the best ways to educate your horse to be calm and collected in all circumstances. Besides the rider having the experience to relax and enjoy the experience of being out in the open spaces your horse has the same experience. I know many of you will say I took my horse out for a trail ride and he was almost uncontrollable, all he did was jig jogged, or pulled all day. Just like any horse riding discipline your horse has to be educated to enjoy and cope with this type of work. In many cases what a horse sees on his first Trail ride may be the first time in his life that he has seen or heard the sound of running water. Therefore you need to see Trail riding as a learning experience for both horse and rider. Just like show jumping there are basic rules for trail riding that need to be followed to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride for horse and rider. • Maintaining a safe distance between horses. • Two horse length between each horse. • If you have a horse that is prone to kicking out then wear a red ribbon on its tail • Be observant and if you see holes or danger on the trail notify other riders. • Follow the safe way of opening and closing gates. • Make sure you give space to all riders to pass through the gate safely These are just a few of the rules that will help make trail riding safe and enjoyable. Added to this is your Ride leader knowing the trail and giving you a brief before the ride of where there is the chance to trot or canter. When trotting or cantering on a trail ride we must all ways be aware of every rider’s ability and every horse’s behavior. This is done to ensure that you do not have horse or riders that in the first instances do not cope well with having a trot or canter and then not able to settle back to a relaxed walk.
What I have just said may sound a little bland but I can assure you it is not just in the dressage or show jumping ring that horses play up. Remember horses are a herding animal and when we bring them together in a large group this instinct returns. As a result there is the need for rules and a code of conduct to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride for all. Once you have began Trail riding you will say why I didn’t start earlier. It is a great experience to go on a trail ride of 100 riders. One of my great rides that I never miss is the Kil Kivin Great Horse ride. This is a ride where a thousand horses come together after a day’s riding and ride down the main street of the town. This ride is an annual ride in April each year. There are a number of trails in the State Forests that riders can use. I have contacted the relevant state department and I have information mapping out these areas being sent to me. I will provide these for you in the next edition. If you go as an individual to these trails you do not need a permit. If you go as a group you need to apply for a permit. This is free. You contact the department of Sustainability. I know that the Heinze Dam is a little out of you area but this is an area that has some great trails to ride on. There is some steep hill and great views over the coast on these trails. Added to this is the chance to see much of our natural Flora and Fauna in the wild. I have been involved with horses all my life. Competition mainly Eventing and I trained all my eventers in the bush. The only time my horses saw a course or show jumping ring was on competition day. Added to this I have spent many years working in the horse transport industry. Transporting horses from Perth to Sydney, Brisbane on a weekly basis. Also involved with preparing horses for international travel on Jumbo Jets. I am available to assist any group that want to go trail Riding and help you enjoy this activity.

LEFT FOR DEAD HORSES HEALING HEARTS “ANOTHER WORLD”
A ground-breaking horse coaching program is helping at-risk school children learn kindness, trust, and respect, improving the quality of life for families throughout the Gold Coast community. Children who are out of touch with their own emotions take them out on others by bullying or express them through aggressive and disrespectful behaviour like graffiti, shop-lifting, and petty crime. Coming face to face with a horse can instantly change all that. “Animals have a calming influence on our emotions, and horses are particularly sensitive and in touch with their innate sensory awareness, they are able to detect human emotions we are not always aware of”, says Nerang horse coach, Jodie Alderton. When we are angry or sad, the horse reflects that emotion back to us. Using horses, we can instantly see and understand what is going in a child's secret world.” Through Harmony Hooves Healing Hearts, Jodie runs horse-based learning programs for at schools throughout the Gold Coast and Brisbane. A former facilitator with Arundel Park Riding for the Disabled, and various schools who utilised the programs, she is no stranger to children, horses, and the life-changing bonds they can form. Harmony Hooves has just joined with Grant Tulloch ( Anudder World) to extend the program to children who are disruptive in class or being bullied, or worse. The program will run for the first term in
2011 with Toogoolawa School. Jodie and Grant volunteer their time to Healing Hooves Centre by rescuing horses and other farm animals to work with the kids. (Buttons one of the latest rescues is one in a million) Horse activities are fun and easy, and families can enjoy happier kids quicker and cheaper compared to more traditional therapies. “The horses do all the work - our job is to bring the children and animals together and let the magic happen in a structured learning environment” says Jodie. To find out more about how these programs with horses can help your child, school, or community group, you are welcome to call 55274782 and speak to Jodie. Teachers and principals with special education units are especially encouraged to call. We also have sponsorship packages of horses available…. The new Healing Centre is located at 265 Beaudesert -Nerang Road, Nerang ( look for the pink tyre)

THE ORIGINS OF REINING Management of cattle from the back of a horse has always been a prominent feature in USA cowboy history. On the open range, there were no means of holding cattle, so a cowboy required a quick, smart horse that could stop immediately, change direction and chase down an ignorant bovine. To enable the cowboy to focus his attention on the cattle handling tasks at hand he needed a well trained horse that could be controlled mostly by legs and weight, ridden with only one hand and a light touch on the reins. At ranch and rodeo gatherings proud cowboys showed off the talents and abilities of their mounts to reveal who really had the best and most versatile horse. These demonstrations have evolved into the sport of Reining as we know it today.
REINING … IT’S BOOMING! Reining has since spread as a sport across many countries to become one of the most popular and fastest growing equine events in the world. In Australia the sport is governed by Reining Australia. The sport of reining has progressed to such a point that it was a demonstration event at the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. In 2006 Reining Australia (formally NRHA) affiliated with the international reining body in support of its bid to have reining selected as the fourth Olympic Equestrian Discipline by 2009. Australian Reining Horse riders now have the opportunity to compete on the world stage at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Reining Australia is currently working toward this goal. Reining competition draws large numbers of spectators to its major events throughout the country. Although the western breeds dominate the competition of Reining this event is open to all breeds of horses and shows the athletic ability of each horse.
REQUIREMENTS IN REINING Your horse must be responsive and in tune with you as its rider. He’ll be judged on his abilities to perform a set pattern of movements incorporating spins, circles, flying lead changes, rollbacks, pivots, rundowns, sliding stops and back-ups. Work is performed at the lope and the gallop. Your horse must be able to be easily and willingly guided and controlled with little or no apparent resistance. When performing all movements the head and neck of your horse should be held in a relaxed frame and there should be no gaping of his mouth. Markers are used in all Reining patterns. Failure to run circles or figure of eights within the markers is not considered a fault depending upon the arena size and conditions. However, a failure to go past the required markers for rollbacks and stops is considered a fault and will incur a penalty. Article by Lyn Hoffmann © 2010

Greasy Heel, Mud Fever and Rain Scald By Yvonne Lucas Equine Holistic Therapist Due the early wet season we are experiencing this year, many horses will be affected by Greasy Heel, Mud Fever and Rain Scald. Dermatophilus congolensis, is the organism responsible for these conditions and is a bacteria (actinomycete) with many similar actions to fungi. This skin infection is seen worldwide, but is most prevalent in the tropics. The lesions are characterised by an exudative dermatitis with scab formation. Greasy Heel which sometimes just looks like a scratch or two in the fetlock “cup" can be simply set off with an increase in dampness and humidity. Mud fever is characterised by filling of the legs with heat & soreness (inflammation) and if not treated promptly can result in severe lameness and excessive scabbing. Rain Scald Is characterised by the appearance of large crusty scabs, or small matted tufts of hair, which when pulled, leave moist pink to grey holes or craters of pus material in the skin. The lesions are distributed in areas that continuously get wet and drain poorly, such as along the backline and croup area where the skin becomes soft and less resistant to the invasion of the organism. Certain horses are more susceptible than others, such as horses with excess feathering on the legs and fetlocks, horses with white skin, horses with lowered immune system function and horses without protection from the elements (rugging, dry stable).
The dermatophilus congolensis organism is extremely contagious so sharing rugs, saddle blankets, brushes and other equipment is not advisable and disinfecting equipment that has been in contact with a horse infected with the organism is important. Research has shown that topical treatments containing, Tea Tree, Aloe Vera, Neem Oil and Manuka Honey (to name a few) may be effective as a treatment aid. Severe cases often require more than just topical treatments which is when I would recommend a Herbal Detox program. You need to remove the build of toxins in the system and improve overall circulation for effective healing to occur. It does not happen overnight, there is no quick cure and it rarely gets better without treatment. Topical treatment should include an antibacterial shampoo and cream massaged into the affected areas so as to reach the skin. Make sure that the horse‟s coat is dry before rugging so as not to promote a humid environment, which is what the dermatophilus congolensis organism thrives in. These conditions are extremely uncomfortable and debilitating causing considerable pain and suffering to horses so the use of anti-inflammatory pain relieving herbs may be required, such as Devils Claw and White Willow. As I often say to my clients….. „what you see on the outside, is only the tip of the iceberg…. It is only a small manifestation of what is going on inside”. If you have a horse or pony who has problems with one or all of these conditions then have a look at their diet closely. A healthy horse/pony on a balanced diet with a healthy immune system is a lot less likely to develop these problems. www.theherbielady.com

Grooming Tips - From the Top Show groomers share secret techniques for making their horses stand out on show day.
Every top show groom has his or her own bag of tricks out of which they pull some secret technique to make their horses stand out. Here's a list of tips to help you shine on show day: • For really white socks or stockings, dust the legs with baby powder, corn starch or French white chalk. • To cut down on static electricity in the mane and tail, use dryer sheets. One wipe-down through the hair will help eliminate static. • Rub a dab of baby oil along the bridle path to get rid of that chalky, just-clipped look and make it shiny. • For breeds that show with a patent-leather shiny hoof, fill in any old nail holes with a spackling compound that matches the colour of your horse's hoof. For a black foot, the colour of the compound won't matter. To polish the feet, use the wax-based, cake shoe polishes to add a deep luster to the foot while protecting it from the drying effects of hoof lacquer, which can be applied over the shoe polish. • When you don't need to pull the mane, use thinning shears to shorten it without having the chopped look of scissor cuts. • Clippers can give you the effect of a pulled tail, without having to pull out hairs. Run the clippers carefully along the outside of the dock and down about 4 to 6 inches, just up to the point where the hair begins to crest over. Thin the hairs along the top of the tail and blend longer hairs to gradually blend into the shorter ones. • To make your horse shiny mix your shampoo in water and add baby oil. • Wash your horse a couple of days before the show so the oils of the coat have time to work to the surface for a natural shine. Keep a light sheet on to keep the coat clean until show day. • If you choose not to braid a horse's mane, lay a dampened towel over the neck to help the hairs lie down smoothly. • Keep a wrap on your horse's braided tail - temporarily - so that it arrives at the show grounds with the braid intact. • Apply only one coat of hoof oil or dressing if arena footing is deep. The oil will collect dirt, but the judge will know that you made the effort. • Instead of using rags to wipe down your horse, purchase inexpensive knit gloves (available at most Chemists or hardware stores) and apply the product directly to them. When you are finished, they can be washed. • For coarse tails, use a hot oil treatment in addition to your regular equine conditioner to soften the hairs and make them flow. • Clipping excess hair to show refinement of the socks, fetlocks, tail, bridle path, ears, muzzle and jaw. If you clip the inside of your horse's ears, place cotton inside to prevent hairs from entering the ear canal and also to deaden the buzz of the clippers.
• On some colours, darkening the colour of the legs using ravens oil, enhances the coat colour and finish. • Darkening the muzzle and ear region to simulate a ‘summer’ face/coat, done with specialised makeup or chalk and baby oil (my preferred method, easy and cheap!) • If you like the sleek, shiny look on the face, try using Brylcreem instead of baby oil. This wonderful men's hair product creates a natural shine that sets off your horse without making him look oily. It only takes a little bit to add polish to your horse's face. •
Dyeing the tail of the bay horse to eliminate sun bleaching and to show a nice gloss to the hair. Flaxen and palomino horses often need a stronger method of cleaning to eliminate urine stains if a tail bag has not been used. Sard Wonder Soap or Sunlight Soap in the bar, works amazing on white tails and socks.

When your Western Pleasure horse carries himself in a balanced frame, he will feel effortless beneath you. You will feel the power of his muscles working to support his body at a soft and steady pace. He will be light and responsive to your slightest cue. You will feel centered and nearly motionless in the saddle. Your horse will have a round back and engaged hindquarters, as well as a level top line and picture perfect silhouette. Your horse's neck will be parallel to the ground with the tips of his ears no lower than his withers and his poll no higher. That may vary depending on his conformation and natural carriage. His head will be carried in a vertical position or with his nose slightly ahead of the vertical. His movement will be relaxed and fluid in every gait, his rhythm slow, steady, and cadenced, his knees and hocks driving forward with minimal lift. This perfect frame isn't just about looks; it comes with benefits. When your horse is travelling properly he will give you: - Cadenced Gaits - A Smoother Ride - Consistent Rhythm and Speed - Responsiveness to the Lightest Touch from Your Reins
To achieve this frame, you’ll ask your horse to distribute his weight evenly between his hind end and his front end; each hind leg's stride will equal the length, or slightly exceed that, of the step he takes with his front legs. This balanced carriage allows your horse to achieve a proper profile. However, when the opposite occurs and his stride is short behind, he will carry more of his weight over his forehand, and his top line will invert and go from round to upside down. It's this inverted frame, when the neck elevates and the back drops lower, that will transform the most elegant mover into a real mess. No horse can be a pleasure to ride or to look at once he’s lost his balance. A horse that’s hollowbacked is carrying too much weight on the forehand and loses his ability to reach forward through his shoulders and hips and move fluidly. For a pleasure horse to perform at his best, all forward motion must originate from his hindquarters. That is the horse's engine. The hind end pushes the hocks under the horse's body to provide motion and in turn elevates the front end. As the forehand lightens, the horse become more manouverable. It also allows the forelegs to sweep forward with full range of motion and reduces unwanted knee action. On the other hand, if a horse’s stride shortens, the hocks will move up and down in a piston-like manner instead of providing forward impulsion. That increases the weight on the forehand and interferes with the motion of the front legs, causing more lift in the knees and increasing the force of impact when the front hooves hit the ground. When you have excessive vertical movement in the knees and hocks, it restricts your horse's ability to perform at his best. It also makes the ride a rougher one for you. The more jarring the gaits, the greater the physical effects on your horse. When a horse moves in an unbalanced frame, the muscles of the back and neck will shorten. This causes tension and strain that can develop into chronic soreness. The pounding on the front legs that is caused when a horse is travelling with too much weight on his front legs puts additional stress on his joints. That's why I look at the training of a western pleasure horse as more than a demonstration of slow speeds and the picture perfect profile on the rail. It should also strengthen his body, develop endurance, and increase his longevity by helping him withstand the stresses and strains that can lead to a breakdown. Unfortunately, proper carriage is often lost when slowness is achieved at the cost of quality gaits and true balance. To avoid having this problem with your horse, or if your horse is already exhibiting the signs of frame failure, reengage his hind end and lengthen his stride.

Dental Unlike humans, whose teeth grow to a certain size and remain that way forever, horses have teeth that grow continuously for the majority of a horse's life, up until age twenty-five or thirty. While ever-growing teeth may seem impractical for humans, it is an efficient system for a horse. Horses in the wild will graze most of the day, and the plants that they consume are often covered in a thin layer of dirt. This dirt and other sediment slowly wear away the teeth, usually in a fairly even manner making room for more teeth to grow in. Unfortunately, one of the shortfalls of modern horse care is that horses have been removed from their natural conditions and are often fed types of feed that will not wear down the teeth as efficiently as the teeth were developed to. What are the dangers of a horse's teeth wearing unevenly? Occasionally these mis-worn teeth will be ground into razor sharp hooks that can cause a horse serious discomfort. Often with the help of the halter, the cheek will be pressed against the tooth where it will be sliced into repeatedly. This of course can lead to infection, and certainly a great deal of pain. If left unchecked, the uneven wear could eventually lead a horse to chew in an unnatural fashion that could, in the end, lead to a tooth that simply loosens and falls out. A horse missing teeth will of course be even more prone to wearing its teeth unevenly. Without leaving your horse out to pasture for eighteen hours a day, how is a horse owner to cope? Here is where equine dentists come into play. Using a rasp, either manually or by means of a power tool, an equine dentist will float" your horse's teeth. The idea is that the sharp ridges and hooks that may have been created will be filed down, Allowing the horse eventually to move its jaw in the correct manner and without pain. The equine dentist will not file the horse's teeth until they are smooth however. The horse needs some contours to its teeth for proper chewing. The teeth will be filed to roughly the same length, and if a horse's canine tooth has grown too long, it may be filed as well. Occasionally, a tooth will be too long to be filed efficiently. When this happens, a dentist will then use a specialized tool to cut it down to size. This task especially is best left to a professional to ensure that your horse's tooth will not shatter. In order to detect a dental problem in your horse, simply pay attention to how the horse eats. If you notice your horse to be salivating more than usual, to eat very slowly, to drop un-chewed food from their mouths or who have faeces with large pieces of food visible, it may be time to call in the equine dentist. If you are not familiar with an equine dentist in the area, your veterinarian or other local horse owners may be able to help you track one down. In fact, many equine veterinarians are also skilled in equine dentistry. Article By: Jared Wright

Veterinary By: Andy Lamont Scenic Rim Vets Headshaking is a widely recognized disorder characterized by uncontrollable shakes, jerks or flicks of the head and neck in the absence of any obvious cause. Head shakers may sneeze, snort, rub their nose, flip their lip and strike at their face. The disorder can be best described by imagining what a horse would look like if a bee had flown up its nostril. Most cases are seasonal with signs generally worsening in late spring and summer. Some horses may only show signs when being ridden while others are constantly affected. This condition most commonly occurs in middle aged horses (7-9 years) but it can affect all age groups. There are over 50 potential causes of head shaking in horses, making an exact diagnosis difficult. A recent study of 100 headshaking horses revealed a potential specific cause in only 11 horses. In broad terms the causes of head shaking can be separated into; •Behavioural resentment to rider induced head and neck flexion •Ear infections and ear mites •Eye infections and light sensitivity •Guttural pouch disease (visualized with an endoscope in the horse’s throat) •Dental disease •Spinal damage •Rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal passage) •Increased sensitivity of the facial nerves (trigeminal nerve) Recent experimental studies have found that the majority of head shaking horses are reacting to a sharp, burning pain due to overstimulation of the trigeminal nerve (one of the main nerves of the head). The main function of this nerve is to provide sensation to the face and eyes of the horse but it is also involved in actions such as chewing. The underlying problem that causes this nerve to become oversensitive is unknown. What we do know is that once the nerve has been affected, stimuli such as dust, pollen, wind, insects, allergies and temperature changes are thought to trigger the head shaking episodes. It is thought that viruses such as Equine Herpes Virus 1 and 4 that horses may contract as a juvenile may play some role in this condition (although no proof has been found at this stage). We recommend that all horses are vaccinated against herpes virus at 4 and 5 months of age, then every 6 months. Pregnant mares require vaccination at 5, 7 and 9 months of gestation as well as their 6 monthly boosters. A variety of drugs are available for the treatment of headshaking, with variable results. They include Cyproheptadine (oral paste), Carbamazepine and the Equity antifertility vaccine. For specific advice relating to your horse, consult your local veterinarian.

Current Fundraisers The Stephens Family
About Us
Our aim is to raise funds to support financially, families directly involved in the Equine Industry, that have been unfortunately touched by breast cancer. Our goal is to raise funds to support and assist families in their time of need. A Touch of pink has been founded as a representation for breast cancer awareness and fundraising within the horse industry incorporating all breeds, all disciplines, all aspects and avenues from the individual owner, clubs, to the corporate organizations. As an industry that is predominantly 70% women, we all know someone who has been touched by breast cancer. Breast cancer is also non gender specific and this also affects 1 in 10 men. Equine Breast Cancer Awareness has been founded in support of the Stephens family, we currently held a fund raising auction at the Prime Equus Jumping Spring Championships at Werribee Park National Equestrian Center on the evening of Saturday the 11th of September. In conjunction we asked all clubs and events to take part in the Touch of Pink by wearing something pink e.g. a pink ribbon on their horse (see below picture) or gear, or rider wearing something pink and by doing so donating a gold coin, which went directly to the Quilty Family Trust. These events and fund raisers will be ongoing to help support financially other families within the Equine Industry affected by breast cancer. Proudly founded by Prime Equus, we hope to encourage other like minded people within the Equine Industry and Equine Events that are committed to giving back to the Equine Community the opportunity to embrace and support families affected by breast cancer.
