PROJECT 0 / RHINO TRANSFORMATIONS SUMMER PRE-COURSE > USC SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, LOS ANGELES, CA ABOUT This one-week course focused on teaching the fundamentals of digital and architectural design. Basic operations such as extrude, boolean, split, explode, and join were used in Rhino to create base geometries while Grasshopper was used to form more complex geometries. These were then edited in Illustrator for final presentational drawings. DIGITAL Rhino 5, Grasshopper, Illustrator

PROJECT 1 / UNDERGROUND GALLERY WATT-HARRIS GALLERY > USC HARRIS HALL, LOS ANGELES, CA ABOUT The main focus of this project was to create a unique and interesting user experience. The perforated column-walls (lovingly dubbed “cwallums”) are an attempt to create a labyrinth-like feeling in the space but still allowing the user to see further forward. This in itself creates a more open experience where the explorer can wind between a scattering of cwallums without feeling trapped; the next area is always in sight. PROJECT 2 / COURTYARD SHELTER ALOFT > USC HARRIS HALL, LOS ANGELES, CA ABOUT Aloft takes inspiration from the connectedness found in the roots of trees. Seemingly as an homage to the once-existing trees in the courtyard, the envelope covering the span of the area resembles the canopy of those trees. The frame is made of laminated wood (glu-lam) stacked atop each other to form depth and thickness and then laminated with semi-opaque acrylic or plexi-glas sheets. Perforations in the system allow for direct light to shine through in areas of low traffic and for light to be diffused elsewhere, providing a bright space without the harshness of direct sunlight. PROJECT 3 / FOLLY XERI PAVILION > KOREATOWN, LOS ANGELES, CA ABOUT The final project for the semester, this folly aspires not only to facilitate movement and circulation but also provide a stopping-point within the neighbourhood. Taking inspiration from the idea of elevated parks, the Xeri Pavilion becomes a folly that can be explored above, within, and outside. The tesselated surfaces allow for a playful and explorative experience, providing both a space to rest and to move. The structure is composed of a steel frame, concrete panel, and perforated and folded sheet metal. MISC / HAND SKETCHES KRISTI’S SKETCHBOOK > HARRIS STUDIO, USC CAMPUS, LOS ANGELES, CA ABOUT All big ideas come from something small. It grows, from the first touch of the pencil in a sketchbook, to linework in AutoCAD, to a massing in Rhino, to the real deal. Here is where my big ideas began.
