INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND • Adverse weather negatively affecting all aviation stakeholders (airport operators, ground handles, air traffic controllers, airspace users) • Common situation awareness needed in order to mitigate the impact of adverse weather on airport operations

Current operations • Informs the user about current state of the significant meteorological phenomena, forecast of these phenomena (nowcasting) as well as short history for these phenomena (in order to see the trend). • Current data as well as history of the phenomena are gathered from standard AWOS and METAR/SPECI messages. • For 2-hour nowcast system integrates TREND messages (if no TREND message is available then TAF message is used), INCA-nowcast, optionally also radar information as well as satellite data. • Input data used for nowcast generation are configured to customer’s specifications. Short-term plan • Short term plan screen contains forecast of significant meteorological phenomena for the

next 24 hours starting from current time in 1-hour time step (capacity planning, scenario evaluations). • Principle inputs into short term forecast of significant phenomena are TAF and TREND

messages, local mesoscale numerical weather prediction models (Aladin) and optionally also radar information, satellite data. • Input data used for short term plan generation are configured to customer’s specifications.

Short-term plan

15

Long-term plan • Serves for long-term forecast of significant phenomena at the airport. • Forecast always starts from the next day (00-06 forecast time) from the observation time. • First three days of the forecast are represented with 6-hour time step. (00-06, 06-12, 12-18 and 18-00). These intervals exclude phenomena occurring in the last hour of the interval. • Forecast for first three days is generally more accurate thanks to local mesoscale numerical weather prediction models (Aladin) used alongside traditional global numerical weather prediction models (GFS ensamble). • Forecasts for the fourth and more days rely almost entirely on global numerical weather prediction models with lower accuracy, therefore use of 1-day time-step is sufficient. ADVISORIES • Candidate solutions contain list of actions/local procedures to be done in order to mitigate the impact caused by adverse weather situation • Linked to airport specific thresholds (applicable in case of some threshold exceedance = alert) • Must be configured according to the specification of the customer • Candidate solution (if specified for specific intensity of a phenomenon) appears as a pop-up window after clicking on the cell with colored alert

SIGNIFICANT METEOROLOGICAL PHENOMENA Significant meteorological phenomena with impact on AO/GH procedures: • Includes phenomena with impact on airport operators, ground handlers and corresponding procedures (e.g. activities dependent on wind speed and wing gust) • AO/GH relevant phenomena vary depending on the local regulations and specification of an airport • Must be configured according to the specification of the customer (including color coding of MET information) Advanced Aviation Weather Decision Support System
