In this era of mindfulness, we know the power of positive affirmations and the joyous ripple effects it can have on those around us. Each design encompasses a self-affirming mantra and a story such as, “You are loved,” “Surrender,” “Happiness blooms from within,” or even “The best is yet to come.” I create colourfully complex, multi-media art in my studio—on canvas, by illustration, or through the lens—and then I design this as wearable art.

Tissue-like pink and fuchsia petals are set off against a stark black. The contrast allows the soft watercolours to gently cascade across the artwork, which gives rise to a gentle softness. Being happy starts with choosing to be happy and growing toward that light. Who doesn’t like to draw outside the lines? And what creative doesn’t like to make pink palm trees? I had a great time creating this piece. It came about as I was reflecting on past master artist Henri Matisse. A radical art influencer, the French painter Matisse (1869 to 1954) layered gouache-painted paper cutouts in his grand collage murals. His lively compositions juxtaposed varying shapes and colours, provoking new insight into the established genre of contemporary art. Likewise in its courageous blend of media, my illustration of the palm tree set over layers of a multi-textured painting defies convention and gives way to a light, playfully fresh feeling.

ARTIST STATEMENT: Words on the art: ‘shine in all of your brilliance’ I have been so inspired lately with some incredibly smart, powerful, strong and beautiful women in my life. I’ve seen friends who have overcome tough times, who have started new businesses, or started new directions in their lives. I was inspired to create this piece because I know that you have someone in your life who shines, and more importantly I wanted to create a piece that you could wear to be a gentle reminder that YOU shine—in everyday life! What better way to shine than crystals. As I photographed these crystals, I couldn’t help but notice that as you look at the crystals from different views, the faceted sides provide all sorts of colours. ARTIST STATEMENT: Words on the art: ‘stillness in time’ Symbolically, seahorses represent the clarity to see several sides of a situation at the same time. Others believe a seahorse represents patience, protection, and persistence. If you have ever watched a seahorse effortlessly hovering in the waters, you’ve witnessed a gentle calmness amidst the chaotic current of the sea. This image of stillness in time evokes the magical essence of a world under the waves and the oddity of wonders within it. Untraditionally, the selected colours for this waterscape are maroon purples and mottled textures of coral pinks and rusted oranges that stand out amongst the surrounding art.

ARTIST STATEMENT: Words on the art: “Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them - that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.” – Lao Tzu Do you resist change, or do you let things flow naturally and allow change easily? Let go the illusion of control. I came across this Lao Tzu quote and knew I wanted to create a piece inspired by these words. Opposites attract in this abstract painting using blocks and patterns, quilted together with the bold brushstrokes. Contrasting royal blues and cyan flow naturally alongside pinks and crimson. Similarly, predominant horizontal and vertical blocks are in contrast with imposing diagonals. Distinctively, this piece is both versatile and practical to be able to simultaneously match up with a range of opposing colours. The guiding words of this work are highlighted in white to bring prominence to the depth of meaning within it.

ARTIST STATEMENT: Words on the art: ‘earth below me, sky above me, fire within me’ In Chile, the Atacama desert is a uniquely beautiful yet unforgiving landscape. The rich depth of blue gradients are contrasted with the sun-scorched mountains resonating a golden glow. With my feet firmly on the ground, I’m caught in between the barren earth stripped of all vegetation and the larger-than-life sky reaching all edges of the horizon. The stark contrast of the elements ignites the fire within me, making me feel connected and very much alive. The overlay illustrated is a subtle mandala signifying the classical elements: earth, air, water, and fire.

ARTIST STATEMENT: Words on the art: “God is more glorious than the moon, he shines brighter than the stars.” – Job 25:5 During the middle of the night within the Atacama Desert in Chile, South America, I had an opportunity to view the heavens at an observatory and behold the moon, the stars, and the constellations. I casually mentioned to the tour guide how cool it would be if I could take a photo of the moon, and she said, ‘okay.’ She removed the lens from the body of my SLR camera and put it up to the lens of the telescope. My camera literally had a billion dollar telescopic view out of this world. Interestingly enough, until I took this trip to the southern hemisphere, I hadn’t realized that the moon appears upside down from the perception of what we are used to. This image captures the texture and craters of the moon so clearly, without corruption, that the colours reflect monochromatic variants of the celestial blues and greys found on the true surface of the moon. This rare image is a but a glimpse of the unrefined and raw nature of the universe, shining brighter than the stars. The Rocky Mountains

ARTIST STATEMENT: Words on the art: ‘The Rocky Mountains, Canada’ Hello CANADA! I was dying to create a piece where I photographed the Rocky Mountains. Undeniably, the imagery of the Rockies is both tremendous and inspiring no matter who beholds them. During a trip through the Rocky Mountains after a recent snowfall, I was once again taken aback by the astonishing power and grace of the jagged peaks and soft contours of storm clouds towering above me along the highway. I was equally in awe as much as I was just allowing myself to ‘be’ in the mountains. The images were taken between Revelstoke, BC en route to Calgary, Alberta.

ARTIST STATEMENT: Words on the art: ‘amidst the storm, i have overcome.’ This art was inspired by the challenges in life we face. Facing these challenges - and then coming out of this ‘storm’ - whatever it may be. We can’t control that storm... but we always have the choice to choose the calm within it. The artist uses rich, succulent brushstrokes of blues which are accented with crisp line art drawings of tsunami waves. This culmination of waves are highlighted with a gentle orange koi fish curving around the left calf with white text “amidst the storm, i have overcome”.

ARTIST STATEMENT: Words on the art: ‘freedom’ Finally free... A song that captivated me, while sitting in one of my favourite places… Yup! Starbucks. ;) The lyrics in the line are “Float like a feather, finally free...” Isn’t that beautiful? Something about this line captured my senses to create this piece. That visual image of feather, freely flowing in the wind on a calm day… up, down, over, quick and then slow… to be guided by the wind, gently to the earth. There is something so gentle about a feather. In this design, I imagined that lone feather, cascading to the ground, joining others, fading into a gentle mass of white. Just being. Free. ARTIST STATEMENT: Words on the art: ““be not afraid, only believe” - Mark 5:36 A dramatic BC waterfall cuts through volcanic rock, ultimately breaking free from a demes canopy of trees. This sets the scene for an abstract illustration. I initially overlaid this backdrop with an inked sketch of a castle amidst mountains. Our mind is like a castle with many rooms—some rooms we want to explore, others we don’t, and still others we have explored many, many times. In the summer I took a trip with a good friend to those Spahats Creek Falls in Wells Gray Park, British Columbia. Upon coming to the edge of the cliff, an old familiar fear crept in. I felt as though I’d rather not venture further, but he guided me in a gentle way, allowing me to appreciate the vastness of this breathtaking view. Sometimes we need others to help us to not feel afraid. Have faith, and simply believe.

ARTIST STATEMENT: I grew up as a child watching my grandmother paint landscapes with oil. I have early memories of watching her learn from cable tv’s Bob Ross; how to perfectly paint dotted foliage, create wispy skies and texture features in the landscape. Her art inspired others. I remember as a child my father would always refer to his mother as ‘Mother Teresa’ because of her caring and giving heart. My grandmother Teresa passed away in 2013. To honour her artwork and the creativity passed down to me, I decided to turn this painting— her painting—into wearable art so that her loving intentions of making this world a more beautiful place could live on. This is but a part of her legacy.

I have been so inspired lately with some incredibly smart, powerful, strong and beautiful women in my life. I’ve seen friends who have overcome tough times, who have started new businesses, or started new directions in their lives. I was inspired to create this piece because I know that you have someone in your life who shines, and more importantly I wanted to create a piece that you could wear to be a gentle reminder that YOU shine—in everyday life! What better way to shine than crystals. As I photographed these crystals, I couldn’t help but notice that as you look at the crystals from different views, the faceted sides provide all sorts of colours. What better way then be a great representation of woman shining in so many different ways!

ARTIST STATEMENT: Words on the art: ‘Surrender’ This black and white piece was created with the idea of yin/yang in mind. The concept of giving/ receiving or black/white or challenge/simplicity or fighting/surrendering. Surrender doesn’t always look or feel easy. This art showcases both this intensity and release. Black brushstrokes lead to a calming simplicity in white and light greys down the leg and calf. Ending in detailed light splashes of black. This piece was primarily painted using a feathers as a paintbrush!

ARTIST STATEMENT: Ever had that moment where you walk into a room, and suddenly something overcomes you? It literally stops you in your tracks, your train of thought is completely derailed. That’s the connection I felt when—for the first time in my life—I witnessed a Pablo Picasso exhibition in the Seattle Art Museum. Wow! I knew from that moment I wanted to create a piece that was inspired by, and in tribute to, Pablo Picasso. Hence, Pablo Pineapple. This sweet epiphany came to me when I found out I was nominated for the Mayor’s Gala for the Arts: Artist of the Year award. Deep, rich colours in a fluid and loose style bring out the blocky, geometrical simplicity of high art and stylized, still life. This white-reverse, copacabana pineapple both pops off the design and at the same time deconstructs our understanding of shape itself.
