The clientofthe projectisa MalayMasterWoodcarver. AdiguruNorhaizawasraisedinaquietMalayvilageonthe eastcoastofTerengganu,Malaysia;anareathathashad a long asociation with traditionalarts& crafts.Now a mastercarverinhisownright,there’ssomethingelsethat Norhaiza yearnstodo— tosharewithasmanysoulsas posiblehisresearch,workandart.

AthisgaleryinKampungRaja,Besut,whereitalbegan, Norhaizapromotesthelovenotonlyforwoodcarving,but forMalaycultureandheritage,includingpursuitsinMalay traditionalarchitecture,ancientmanuscriptsandantique textilesthatrevealtherapidlydiminishingold world from theNusantara.

TheideabehindthehouseforAdiguruNorhaizaistobring abouthisunique personalityinthe designofthe house. Norhaiza’s intricate wood carvings infuses Nusantara influencesand traditionalcraftsmanship whichboastshis Malayheritage.With thisin mind,the approach to the designwasto embrace the contemporaryyetmaintain strong connectionsto the ‘kampung’house (traditional Malayhouse)design.He also holdsa strong believe in understanding the philosophy ofcarving which instilsa feelingofhumilityandrespecttowardsthespiritofwood. Therefore the aim was not to create something extravagant,butto create a modestspace thatwould aestheticalypleasethesenses.

Thedesignalsotakesonafunctionalaproachwherebythe site context and Malaysian climate is taken into consideration.Forthatreason,thedesignappreciatesthe qualityofopennesbyapplyingstackefectandtheuseof minimalpartitions.Besidesthat,spatialplanning isalso applied to alow everyday tasks to be caried out conveniently and forease ofpasage throughoutthe house.
