EDUCATION

Curriculum Connections: Visual Arts, Language Arts, Math, Science, Physical Education, Social Studies

MONARCH DAYS (2nd - 5th grade) In this high flying class, students will observe hundreds of Monarchs in free-flight in our Butterfly House. Under the microscope, your students will investigate monarch anatomy, watch a tagging demonstration and participate in a migration simulation game. Classes are held in September. *Please note that the Butterfly House is only open from June-September.

BEEHIVE BUZZ (pre-K - K) Peak your earlier learners’ curiosity with a playful look at bees and their habitat. Learn how they communicate through the waggle dance and collect pollen to support the colony. This class promotes active bodies and imaginative minds.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? (pre-K - 1st grade) Our original program, which leads students through the discovery of what is essential to grow a plant from seed to flower. Your students will help grow a 6-foot sunflower as they become the soil, rain and sun!

OPERATION INSECT INVESTIGATION (1st - 3rd grade) Expand your student’s understanding of a “bug’s life” by learning how they eat, move and survive in their habitat. Your entomologist-in-training will see through the eyes of an insect into a kaleidoscopic world. Enjoy a game in the meadow where students become insects and have to find their mate through smell!

FROM SEED-TO-PLATE: YOUR FOOD’S JOURNEY (2nd - 4th grade) Every human needs food to survive but how does it make it to our table? In this class, we will follow our food from the Kansas fields to the grocery market. Let’s make the seed to plate connection by playing “What’s for Dinner?” and learn how our meals equate to food miles. Students will plant herbs to take home for a windowsill garden.

FROGS AND LIZARDS: CYCLES IN NATURE (4th grade) Explore the metamorphosis of these fascinating Herps. Our interactive program lets students participate by identifying the habitat, behavior, diet and adaptations of these creatures. Play a migration game in the gardens to test your odds of survival.

GARDEN TOURS

Guided tours and self-guided visits are also available for groups of 10 or more. Please call Karla Jahn at 316-264-0448 for specific information.

NOTES for teachers Curriculum Connections: Kansas Science Standards "Despite the fact that we are a part of a highly interconnected web of life, the separation of so many people from direct contact with nature has had enormous consequences. The accumulating research reveals the necessity of contact with nature for healthy child development. Varied experiences in the outdoors make natural processes less abstract and are critical to developing scientific literacy. " - Kansas Department of Education STANDARD 1: SCIENCE AS INQUIRY Benchmark 1: The student will be involved in activities that develop skills necessary to conduct scientific inquiries. STANDARD 3: LIFE SCIENCE Benchmark 1: The student will develop knowledge of organisms in their environment. The student will develop an understanding of the characteristics of living things. Benchmark 2: The student will observe and illustrate the life cycles of various organisms. STANDARD 5: SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Benchmark 1: The student will use technology to learn about the world around them. STANDARD 6: SCIENCE IN PERSONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL PERSPECTIVES STANDARD 7: HISTORY AND NATURE OF SCIENCE Benchmark 1: The student will develop awareness of people that practice science.
