lets have some fun...
WHAT IS TAROT? The Tarot is a deck of 78 cards, each with its own imagery, symbolism and story. The 22 Major Arcana cards represented by Hollywood musicians reflect life’s karmic and spiritual lessons. The remaining 56 Minor Arcana cards reflect the trials and tribulations we experience on a daily basis. Every spiritual lesson we meet in our lives can be found in the seventy-eight Tarot cards. When we consult the Tarot, we get shown the exact lessons we need to learn and master to live an inspired life. It’s like holding a mirror to yourself so that you can access your subconscious mind and tap into the wisdom (and answers) that lives in us all.
WHY HOLLYWOOD? The Tarot consists of ancient symbols that are still commonly utilized in today’s popular media. Tying those symbols to something familiar helps readers learn faster and give more relatable insights. Readers will become shockingly aware of hidden meanings used throughout history as we expose them through stories presented in the Major Arcana.
THE BASICS: USES Contrary to popular belief, Tarot is not about “fortune telling” but learning to follow one’s intuition. GET FAMILIAR WITH TAROT 1
keep it simple
It’s easy to get lost in the Tarot’s complex esoteric system, and if you try to learn all of the symbols at once, you’ll become quickly overwhelmed. Instead, keep it simple by learning cards with short, descriptive 3 bullet lists. Combine this method with easy beginners’ spreads at: seeingstars.design/beginners-spreads
2
trust your intuition
When you feel stuck, put down the books, and take in the energy of the card in front of you. It doesn’t matter if you connect with a different meaning. What you are doing is connecting with your intuitive read of the card – which is often way more powerful! 3
read tarot for yourself
Tarot is a powerful tool for personal development and self-discovery so make use of it. In fact, when you are starting out with reading Tarot, you are your best client! 4
draw a daily card
A great way to build reading confidence is to pull one card every day for yourself and see what kind of guidance you get from it. The act of having a ritual sets your day up for success, while the Tarot card makes you more intuitive by working as a tool to nudge your mind in the right direction. Let’s move on to the Major Arcana represented by Hollywood musicians in our deck. These cards are designed to make one aware of the life lessons, karmic influences and archetypal themes influencing their lives. Theses cards truly represent the structure of human consciousness and hold the keys to lessons passed down through the ages.

TH E FOOL JUSTIN BIEBER AS THE FOOL IS SHOWN WITH UNLIMITED POTENTIAL AT THE BEGINNING OF HIS FAME JOURNEY. The multi-talented former Youtube star was instantaneously plucked from small town Canada and plopped into the Hollywood limelight. The sun rising up behind him represents an optimistic start to his journey through the honeymoon stage of fame and fortune. However, he is facing north-west, the direction of the unknown. Looking upwards toward the sky, he is about to step off a cliff into the material world. Is he prepared? Justin has all the resources he needs for dignified success in the bag on his staff. Will he use it wisely or blow his fortune on missteps like a “swagger coach”? The rose in his left hand symbolizes his former purity and innocence, and he carries it to give to frenzied fans. He had a guardian in Todd, his fluffy white chow chow aimed to push him towards learning important life lessons. Oddly enough, Todd disappeared from Justin’s life as soon as his Instagram vanished from his fans’ radar.
o
TH E FO OL JUSTIN BIEBER
UPRIGHT The upright Fool is a card of potential, innocence, and new beginnings. It indicates that anything can happen and the world is yours for the taking. The Fool symbolizes the ultimate “leap of faith” that embodies enthusiastic, carefree, and impulsive chance. In 2009, Justin is discovered by producer Scooter Brahn via Youtube. He is an instant success landing an opening gig on Taylor Swift’s world tour, working with Usher and having his debut go platinum.
REVERSED Reversed, The Fool suggests total disregard for the consequences of “in the moment” thinking. It represents reckless, selfish decision making that may backfire in negative ways. It cautions to research and prepare before major decisions in order to avoid negative long-term impact. Justin’s 2014 spurt of erratic behavior reflects this. His accomplishments include a DUI, causing thousands in damage to a neighbor’s house from egging, comparing himself to Michael Jackson with an Instagram photo standing a top a car, and smoking so much weed on his private jet that the staff had to wear oxygen masks.

TH E MAGICI A N DAVID BOWIE IS SHOWN AS THE MAGICIAN WHO REPRESENTS BEGINNINGS AS WELL AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN THE SPIRIT WORLD AND HUMANITY. David Bowie is known for projecting an “otherworldly” aura. The following depiction shows his right hand holding the “Book of Blackstar” pointed to the sky, and his left hand pointing towards the Earth. This book was prominent in his last album Lazarus which centers around the theme of death, resurrection, immortality and the connection to something greater. The Magician harnesses the power of the Universe, channels it through his body, and directs it to the physical plane. Shown above The Magician’s head is the symbol of eternity, suggesting Bowie’s immortal link between the physical and spiritual worlds (imagine his celestial personas Ziggy Stardust and Major Tom). His table holds all four suits of the Tarot, each representing one of the four primordial elements of alchemists – earth, air, fire and water. These symbolize the appropriate use of mind, heart, body and soul in the process of manifestation.
I
T H E M AGIC IA N DAVID BOWIE
UPRIGHT The Magician typically appears in a reading when one has the creative power and energy to create a new life cycle. This happens when one has the ability to take the power of the Universe and manifest their deepest desires. David Bowie had consistent success and enigmatic appeal in a career spanning over 5 decades and 28 albums. He constantly reinvented himself, and was a major influence on pop, rock, and alternative music.
REVERSED Reversed, the Magician can indicate greed, deceit, manipulation and using one’s skill and ability for negative ends. It can reflect trickery and cunning, and untrustworthiness. It also may suggest being out of touch with reality and struggling to bring oneself back down to earth. In the video for “Blackstar” one of Bowie’s last singles, he takes on three characters that appear to evolve into one another. The first is a “blind” follower, the second a preacher, and the third a flamboyant trickster.

T H E H I G H PRI E STES S MADONNA AS THE HIGH PRIESTESS SITS BETWEEN TWO PILLARS, SUGGESTING MEDIATION OF THE PASSAGE INTO THE DEPTH OF REALITY. In 2012, Kabbalah-initiate Madonna referred to the Super Bowl as the “Holy of Holies” the name of the most sacred place in Soloman’s Temple. She went on to represent herself as the High Priestess during the game’s halftime show. A keeper of esoteric knowledge, Madonna sat upon a throne wearing a robe symbolizing knowledge and a crown representing the Triple Goddess. Madonna’s scroll represents esoteric teachings. The moon under her left foot shows her dominion over pure intuition. She ultimately represents wisdom, serenity, knowledge and understanding and is often described as the guardian of the unconscious. Her Super Bowl performance has shown that, despite the fact that she is an industry icon and that she pioneered most of the themes modern pop stars exploit, she still needs to embrace the same symbolism in order to fit the mold.
II
T H E H I G H PRI E STE S S MADONNA
UPRIGHT The High Priestess represents a link to the subconscious mind, which cannot be accessed through the everyday world, but through dreams and symbols. When this card appears in a reading, one should pay attention to dreams and intuition. Madonna has had incredible staying power in the pop music scene, with songs showing up in every decade since she first debuted. To this day, she continues to inspire contemporary artists to channel the symbols and themes in her powerful performances.
REVERSED Reversed, the High Priestess may signify that you are not listening to your inner voice and may need to take time for reflection and meditation. Madonna practices meditation and states that it helps show her “how much energy silence has, further inspiring her creative abilities. Madonna likely sees her public interest in esoteric philosophy as carrying artistic potential.

THE EMPRESS BEYONCÉ AS THE EMPRESS REPRESENTS A DEEP CONNECTION WITH FEMININITY AND INTUITION. The Empress represents the archetype of a Mother Goddess. She is ruled by Venus, the planet of love, which holds authority over creativity, fertility, art, harmony, luxury, beauty and grace. The Empress is perched atop an array of luxurious cushions and beautiful flowers suggesting a deep, emotional connection to both life and the Earth. She is also surrounded by wheat reflecting abundance. Already known as pop music’s “Queen B,” Beyoncé has cemented herself as a powerful, inspiring trailblazer. During her first pregnancy with Jay-Z, her celebrity persona transformed from fierce career woman, to nurturing Empress. This persona reconciles two very different and powerful female archetypes. Femininity can translate in many ways – beauty, sensuality, fertility, creative expression, nurturing – and is necessary in creating balance in both men and women. The Empress embodies both of these themes as well as the “birth” of new ideas.
III
TH E E M PRES S BEYONCE
UPRIGHT In addition to encouraging creativity and the “birth” of new things, the upright Empress represents a connection between the Earth and the Universe. Beyoncé’s evolution as an artist can be attributed to the many female personas that she has undertaken in recent years. Her identity as a feminist has been embodied in each one, but in very different ways. The matron figure she presented during her pregnancy was immortalized in a very public photo shoot literally representing The Empress. It was also reinforced onstage at the 2017 Grammy Music Awards where she bore a sparkling goddess gown and halo crown.
REVERSED Reversed, The Empress may represent the loss of personal power via too much sacrifice for others. This loss of personal, emotional, or material needs may be attributed to confusion about the direction a relationship may be taking. This lack of introspection calls for a personal break or re-evaluation in order to connect to one’s inner self. Beyoncé’s mega-popular alter ego Sasha Fierce was announced as “complete” after her pregnancy with twins. Despite this, Queen B experienced a return to her original self, fully embracing a regimen of Soul Cycle to get back in shape and support her husband Jay-Z’s summer tour. Queen B never slows down and is the true embodiment of an Empress.

T H E E M P E ROR JAY-Z AS THE EMPEROR REPRESENTS POWER, AUTHORITY AND PATRIARCHY. The Emperor compliments The Empress and as Beyoncé’s real world spouse, Jay-Z does just that. He became a hip hop powerhouse by overseeing a business empire that supplied him with a finite amount of industry wisdom. His influence as president of Def Jam records and related ventures in fashion, nightlife and promotions, helped cement his place in hip hop royalty. Jay-Z’s power and authority continues to inspire generations of new hip hop, pop and R&B artists to this day. The Emperor holds an Ankh (the Egyptian symbol of Life,) in his right hand, and an orb representing the world over which he rules in his left.
XIX
T H E E M PEROR JAY-Z
UPRIGHT As the father figure of the Tarot deck, Jay-Z protects and defends his loved ones. He offers guidance, advice and wisdom to others and in doing so, demonstrates authority and grounding. He brings security and comfort to those around him. Jay-Z’s most recent album 4:44 was a personal revelation that allowed him to start fresh and gain new and wise perspective. It apologetically recalled his infidelity to his wife Beyoncé, his mother’s queer identity, career mistakes, and lessons learned. He now puts his family first and intentionally spends less time in the limelight.
REVERSED Reversed, the Emperor can suggest an over-use and abuse of authoritative power. It can also indicate lack of self-control, ambition and the ability to deal with any kind of authority other than one’s own. At its core, 4:44 is the story of a man who had to have a daughter to truly see the faults in his actions. In his 2006 song Beach Town, he rapped “I got demons in my past, so I got daughters on the way,” foreshadowing the children he always knew were coming, and who would teach him the maturity, humility and understanding he always lacked.

T H E H I E ROPHAN T PRINCE AS THE HIEROPHANT REPRESENTS CONFORMITY, TRADITION, BELIEF AND GROUP IDENTIFICATION. DUE TO HIS ECCENTRIC OUTWARDLY PERSONA, THIS COMES AS SURPRISE TO MANY. PRINCE WAS, IN FACT, A DEVOUT JEHOVAH’S WITNESS. Prince is represented by a religious figure, sitting within a formal worship environment. His right hand is raised in benediction, the same hand The Magician has raised. The Magician takes raw power from the Universe to manifest on the material plane while the Hierophant channels that same power through society. Next to him is the triple scepter: a symbol of dominion over three worlds (upper [Heaven,] middle [Earth,] and lower [Underworld]). Prince was known for going door-to-door to promote Jehovah’s Witnesses well after he became famous which surprised many fans. His conversion was almost self-described as a cleanse in which he could “clean out the cobwebs,” to “see things more clearly.”
V
TH E H I E ROPHAN T PRINCE
UPRIGHT The Hierophant suggests following due process and staying within conventional boundaries that symbolize adapting to an existing set of beliefs. Prince confused fans by joining Jehovah’s Witnesses later in his career while making God and retribution a theme in many of his songs. He stated that Evangelization helped him reconnect with the world around him while providing explanation for many of the world’s social injustices.
REVERSED Reversed, The Hierophant suggests feeling restricted or constrained by structure and rules, resulting in a loss of control in one’s life. It also indicates a strong desire to go against the grain and break free from convention. Despite a strict religious upbringing, Prince has gone against convention for the majority of his career. Even converting from Seventh Day Adventism to a Jehovah’s Witness suggests this.

T H E LOV E R S PROVING TABLOIDS WRONG SINCE 2015, BLAKE SHELTON AND GWEN STEFANI EMBODY HOLLYWOOD’S MOST CURRENT REPRESENTATION OF THE IDEAL COUPLE. Despite being accused of faking their relationship for The Voice cameras, Blake and Gwen are still going strong. Born at the intersection of timing, circumstance and heartbreak, the couple has overcome incredible odds with the entire world watching and waiting. It’s possible that a concerted effort to keep their budding relationship on the down low helped preserve it. In addition to minimizing time in the limelight, Blake and Gwen have let the few public words that did slip out about their relationship gush with mutual admiration. Elemental air, represented by clouds, is associated with communication. This signifies a healthy, thoughtful, balanced relationship. The sunlight peeking through the clouds represents warmth and security. The fertile earth at The Lover’s feet suggests life and happiness. Blake is a Gemini (embodying communication,) which compliments his Libra partner Gwen (embodying love,) perfectly.
VI
TH E LOVE R S
BLA KE S HELTON + GWEN STEFANI
UPRIGHT The lovers’ trust in one another gives them strength and confidence to overcome life’s obstacles. The bond that these two lovers create is incredibly strong, and is often reflective of a marriage, soul mate or a very intimate, close relationship. Blake recalls forming feelings for Gwen after bonding over their respective divorces. “When we found out what each other were going through, this instant bond we created, it’s unspoken and it’s still there,” Shelton explains. “That’s what’s most important to Gwen, is somebody who has her back and is a best friend. And that’s kind of how it started. And it just kept snowballing and snowballing into, you know, what it is now. And it just feels like it gets stronger all the time.”
REVERSED The reversed Lovers indicate avoiding responsibility for the consequences one’s own actions. The Lovers may have rushed their decision purely based on the desire for instant gratification. A reversal may also suggest disharmony and difficulty in being able to balance one’s inner self. It’s a possibility that Blake and Gwen never got a chance to reconnect with their inner selves after their divorces. They almost immediately jumped into a committed relationship, allowing very little time for true healing. As the media dissects their every decision, only time will tell if they are meant to last.

2015 SUPER BOWL HALFTIME
T H E C H A R I OT KATY PERRY AS THE CHARIOT IS A ROARING REPRESENTATION OF WILL POWER, CONTROL, ASSERTION AND DETERMINATION. Katy Perry has been shown as The Chariot three times in her career: here she wears a dress made from flames while riding a giant tiger during the 2015 Super Bowl Halftime show. Her second appearance had her dressed as an Egyptian Empress guarded by two “Katy Cats” in the video for her hit single “Dark Horse”. The third is on her current Witness tour. Katy has represented this brand of bold, confident “girl power” since coming onto the music scene in 2007. The Chariot represents conquest, victory and overcoming opposition through confidence and control. Katy has often faced criticism over leaving her Christian gospel roots, her feud with pop rival Taylor Swift, and her hypersexualized stage personas. It’s only fitting that she represent The Chariot after producing three consecutive Billboard 200-topping albums in spite of her haters. She’s truly maintained her status as a pop princess while letting out a big “Roar” in the process.
VI I
TH E C H ARIOT KATY PERRY
UPRIGHT Katy’s conquest of the pop charts for the last decade can be attributed to great inner strength, motivation and vision. She has consistently thrived to be bigger and bolder with each release. Katy says the following about her single “Roar”: “The inspiration behind that song is just about speaking up for yourself, and not letting yourself get in the way because… everybody talks about bullying and things like that and while that is important, sometimes you are your own biggest bully. Sometimes, you are the person that gets in the way of everything — your success, your personal relationships.”
REVERSED The reversed Chariot suggests feeling as if one has lost control over their life and ambitions. It suggests feeling dragged through time in whatever direction fate chooses. Katy’s latest (and least popular,) album departs from her usual candy-coated power pop. Although it’s her first attempt at criticizing industry clichés and being “socially minded,” it comes off as artificial and forced. Witness therefore began as an ambitious departure and ended as an overproduced flop.

ST R E NG TH BRITNEY SPEARS IS THE ULTIMATE REPRESENTATION OF STRENGTH AS A ONCE FALLEN POP PRINCESS WHO CERTAINLY CAME BACK “STRONGER THAN YESTERDAY”. Britney Spears embodies physical and mental strength as she tames a lion in a scene from her “Circus” video. Britney overcomes the lion with a quiet strength from within. This strength symbolizes the animalistic passion and desire that she struggled with over the course of her career. At only 37, Britney Spears has overcome divorce, a mental breakdown, weight gain, and public rage all under the eyes of constant paparazzi. In spite of this, she has always remained humble and productive selling 150 million records worldwide further cementing herself as an all-time best selling artist. Strength means to endure life’s obstacles by drawing upon inner confidence. This is possible by demonstrating maturity and composure which Britney has been able to do after every major “break” that she’s experienced. It symbolizes a harmonic balance between human, animal and the divine characteristics of one’s self mastery.
VIII
STR E NGTH BRITNEY SPEARS
UPRIGHT In addition to representing determination, endurance and power, the Strength card has an element of compassion in it given the way Britney is patiently handling the lion. This symbolizes potential to tame the beast within, returning to the theme of animalistic urges. Britney Spears’ Circus album circa 2008 was her fifth number one album on the Billboard charts and the ultimate comeback album showcasing her as a ringleader.
REVERSED Reversed Strength indicates weakness. This could be triggered by a recent setback or directional dilemma. Because inner courage is lacking, feelings of inadequacy and vulnerability come as a result. Britney’s meltdown era in which she infamously shaved her head in a Valley barber shop is an example in which the overwhelming consequences of fame broke her down to a weakened physical and mental state.

THE HERMIT MICHAEL JACKSON AS THE HERMIT STANDS ALONE HAVING ATTAINED HIS SPIRITUAL PINNACLE. The Hermit stands alone and is ready to share his knowledge and experience. He continues on the path he has always chosen, committed to a goal of ultimate awareness. Only the wise who earnestly seek The Hermit’s secrets are let into his world. The juxtaposition between Michael’s bizarre tendency to isolate himself from society and his giving nature encompass this persona. Michael was revealed to have a gentle yet firm mentoring style towards his dancers. He was known for his ability to push artists beyond their perceived limits (including himself). Overall, he was considered a global messenger advocating empathy, compassion, philanthropy, and social reform. Michael often attributed an intuitive, spiritual energy working through him. Because of this belief, he frequently denied his own musical genius. The astrological correspondence for The Hermit is Virgo and the number 9 signifies accomplishment, wisdom, attainment of goals, and the search for truth. Michael was born on August 29th under the sign of Virgo.
IX
TH E H E R M IT MICHAEL JACKSON
UPRIGHT The Hermit suggests a phase of introspection. It symbolizes taking a step back from day-today life, and deeply contemplating motivations, personal principles and values. In the context of The Hermit, this soul searching is to be done in solitude where spiritual attainment| is more focused. During Michael Jackson’s later years he lived in a literal fortress of solitude — a tormented, creative soul cut off from the real world. This archetype is ever-present in lifestyles of the rich and famous, but Michael took it to the next level by constructing a literal fantasy escape (Neverland Ranch,) and wearing masks in public.
REVERSED Reversed, The Hermit can take two directions. The first suggests not taking enough time for personal reflection. The second suggests too much time in isolation where one might cut off relations in a self-destructive manner. Although Jackson’s realm of solitude was surrounded by beautiful gilded objects, they poorly compensated for the meaningful, human connection he needed so badly. Plagued by anxiety and insecurity, Michael’s life filled with public assumption and mockery. This negative impact prompted further isolation, and eventually played a role in his death.

Surrounding the elements are money values inspired by the Hollywood Wheel of Fortune. The Wheel extends outward to the star-studded Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Wheel itself refers to the fact that most things in life are cyclical in nature, and that events tend to feed off one another. REVERSED Reversed, The Wheel warns “what comes around may go around” in a karmic premonition. It is an unlucky omen that indicates negative forces that are out of one’s control are at play. This may be because of poor decisions made in the recent past carrying into the current situation. The reversed Wheel may also represent a resistance to change.

J UST I C E JUSTICE UPHOLDS THE THEME OF CAUSE AND EFFECT. SHE HAS THE ABILITY TO WEIGH BOTH SIDES OF A COIN, AND END ON A MORAL NOTE. Justice represents fairness and truth. She weighs multiple perspectives, always ruling over the most accountable decision. Lana Del Rey came onto the music scene as a controversial persona: she appeared elegant and refined, yet exposed (and embraced) Hollywood corruption in her songs. Dubbed as a “gangster Nancy Sinatra,” Del Rey has fought against labels thrust upon her through subtle and refined lyrical jabs. Consistently conquering themes of love, death, and reconciliation, Del Rey’s persona as Justice appears in her “Born to Die” music video. Here she appears upon a throne during the aftermath of a toxic relationship’s death. This raw revelation of truth is ever-present in Lana’s music, as she hides nothing from her listeners. Lana’s scales are balanced, indicating the present comes from actions and decisions made in the past. In the video, Lana is literally above her ex-lover and “at peace” with the tragic end to their story. She utilizes “as above, so below” hand symbols, revealing that both parties earned what they deserved through consequence.
XI
J UST IC E LANA DEL REY
UPRIGHT Justice represents a conscious awareness that decisions have long-term consequences that affect the present and future. It also shows that the future can be changed due to lessons learned in the present. Lana was caught off-guard by the media when her friend Harvey Weinstein faced Sexual Assault charges. It was wide-speculated that the “Harvey” mentioned in her Lolita-themed single “Cola” was him, sparking further controversy around her image. Lana owned up to the connection, gave her support to the “Me Too” movement, and retired the single from further live performances, quickly remedying her image, and shifting media focus to her new album.
REVERSED Reversed, Justice indicates dishonesty to oneself and others. It shows an unwillingness to understand the deeper meaning of why an event has occurred and shows a missing opportunity for a greater understanding. It indicates not actively accepting responsibility for actions and blaming others for mistakes. Due to the taboo nature of her lyrics, Lana has often been labeled as a hypocrite whenever she voices an opinion. In her own defense, she states that she’s “trying to do what feels right. I tried a lot of different ways of life, you know, things I never really talk about, just because they are kind of different. I didn’t really have one fixed way that I could envision myself living.”

T H E M A RT YR INFAMOUSLY SELF-DESCRIBED AS A MEDIA MARTYR, KANYE WEST SUSPENDS KNEELS BEFORE THE WATCHFUL EYES OF THE PAPARAZZI. Kanye alludes to the crucifixion of Christ while embracing his own image of a Martyr. It is suggested that he is kneels by his own free will due to a very public and controversial complex. Behind his head is a shining halo alluding to his self-proclaimed “close high” to God. The Martyr represents ultimate surrender and sacrifice to the greater good. In 2006, Kanye took over headlines by posing as Jesus Christ for a Rolling Stone feature titled “The Passion of Kanye West”. He continued this theme throughout 2013 on his album Yeezus where he built a complete persona marked by a chained mask and tunic-inspired getup. It was designed to symbolize how he felt as the media scrutinized his brash candor, and even included a track titled “I am God.” The Martyr’s duty is to break free from old behavioral patterns and habits that cause restriction.
TH E M ARTY R
UPRIGHT The Martyr suggests a need to suspend action, and marks the beginning of a critical period of indecision. It may signify an emotional release and building of a new reality. The upright Martyr symbolizes feeling stuck or restricted as represented by Kanye’s commonly worn chained mask. Kanye’s frequent and public outbursts might also be symbolic of his handling of restriction. For example, interrupting Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs revealed Kanye’s uncensored opinion, destructively thrusting him into limelight.
REVERSED In the case of the reversed Martyr, he loses himself by giving too much of his energy away to others. Kanye’s 2016 psychiatric breakdown is symbolic of him putting too much energy into his work and persona while leaving little room for self care. It represents losing sanity in order to fulfill a greater artistic goal.

DE AT H TAYLOR SWIFT TRADES PRINCE CHARMING FOR HER OWN “WHITE HORSE,” SYMBOLIZING DEATH TO HER FORMER SELF. The Death card shows a trans-human Taylor donning a shining exoskeleton. She holds a flag with a glowing “T,” alluding to a cross symbolizing deletion. The “deletion” is the “old Taylor Swift” - country sweetheart. Because Death is the ultimate purifier, her horse is white, symbolizing rebirth. This is also represented by the sun rising in the background. Death stars in Taylor’s edgy music video “Ready For It?” off her album Reputation. The video for “Look What You Made Me Do,” Taylor’s first hit off Reputation, begins with her being buried in a country princess gown. Upon nightfall, she transforms into a zombie who becomes reborn as an edgy pop star waking in a tub of diamonds. Before the end of the video, the new Taylor is shown standing atop a pile of her past personas who are striving to reach her at the top. Contrary to popular belief, the Death card can be a positive omen.
XIII
ÐE ATH TAYLOR SWIFT
UPRIGHT Death represents the end of a major phase in one’s life and the beginning of something else more valuable and important. It symbolizes leaving the past behind in order to embrace transformation and opportunity. “I’m sorry the old Taylor can’t come to the phone anymore. Why? Oh, cause’ she’s DEAD!” Taylor has taken extreme measures to rewrite her story including deleting and remaking social media accounts and disassociating with contemporaries who she perceived were holding back her literal “reputation.”
REVERSED Death reversed indicates resistance while being on the verge of a major change. This reluctance to let go of the past creates a limbo in which fear trumps change. It seems as if Taylor has been slowly easing into her rebirth over her past three album releases. It all began with country-pop hybrid “Red” which received as much praise as it did criticism for its catchy yet overproduced pop anthems. It took two more full pop albums for Taylor to fully shed her “good girl” image and embrace her new self. Nevertheless, she’s been able to maintain if not strengthen her original fan base.

Her enormous talent, purity, authenticity and candor has granted her a loyal, respecting fanbase. Adele stands with an angelic presence on the Temperance card. She has one foot on land, representative of the material world, and the other in water, representing the subconscious. This represents the reconciliation of opposites and finding balance in life. It also symbolizes her need to ‘test the waters’ before jumping headfirst into unknown circumstances (the opposite of The Fool). The triangle on her necklace represents the female being protected by natural law. Temperance encourages learning to find patience, balance, adaptation and moderation in life. This gives one the ability to find peace in order to put things into perspective. Adele leads a very private life and truly values her time outside of the limelight. Many believe this is the reason she is able to consistently turn out amazing albums without experiencing a breakdown or shifting persona… she has and likely always will remain true to herself. A Classic.

T E M P E RANC E ADELE
UPRIGHT Upright Temperance indicates a sense of calm control like a swan appearing gracefully on the surface while madly paddling underneath. It’s a patient and cooperative force that is also very thoughtful and reflective. It thinks long-term rather than impulsively. Most would never guess that Adele suffers from performance anxiety. She manages her symptoms with an alter ego inspired by her idol Beyoncé’s “Sasha Fierce.”
REVERSED Reversed Temperance represents unbalance in one’s life due to conflict or excessiveness. It may also indicate that a desired path has potential to cause unbalance in a given situation. It can also hint at reconsidering the long-term consequences of one’s actions. Adele has always been honest with fans about her struggles with work-life balance. When she became a mother in 2016, she openly discussed her mission to take a break from music and put herself and her family first for awhile. She’s a huge advocate of staying in the present and putting passion and vision over money. These priorities helped her fast-track restoration of balance during her period of flux.

T H E DE V I L LADY GAGA AS THE DEVIL REPRESENTS LUST FOR THE POWER, FAME, AND LUXURIES OF THE MATERIAL WORLD. Gaga is depicted as the goat-headed deity Baphomet. This Satyr-like creature represents an “alchemical wedding,” or union of opposites in the occult. In the case of Gaga’s Baphomet, these opposites include male/female (as demonstrated by her personas,) animal and human (as demonstrated by her frequent animal appendages,) and material and spiritual (as demonstrated by her unnatural, geometric outfit). In Kabbalistic lore, this androgyny symbolizes the highest level of spiritual achievement. On Earth, however, The Devil card represents the scapegoat: a person or thing upon which the inferior side of one’s self is projected in order to regain confidence. Lady Gaga has toyed with the purposeful disassociation with former self(s) by embracing eccentric alter egos throughout her career. This has allowed her to constantly reinvent herself - but at a cost. Gaga is often considered to be the ultimate industry pawn who can be molded into any possible figure designed to feed raw, monetary desire.
XV
TH E DEVI L LA DY GAGA
UPRIGHT The Devil represents hidden negative forces that lead one to believe that they are not in control of their own destiny. This manifests in vices including fear and addiction. Chained at the foot of The Devil’s podium are Gaga’s male (Joe Calderone from the appropriately titled single “Yoü And I,”) and female personas. They appear to be held against their will, but closer observation shows the chains are loose and removable. This symbolizes that bondage to The Devil, or Gaga’s bondage to Hollywood’s expectations, is voluntary. Gaga’s album “The Fame Monster” explores many of these themes in the context of perilous fame.
REVERSED When the Devil is reversed, it indicates a growing awareness that one is aware of his or her trappings, and desires freedom from these harmful bonds. These may include unhealthy or codependent relationships, financial debt, unproductive careers, unhealthy lifestyles, addictions, consumerism and materialism. Gaga openly stated that her rise to fame was “one of the most painful experiences,” of her life, and thinks that “she may never be comfortable” with it. She admits to not being able to “sleep alone” due to literal demons that “haunt her.” Some critics interpret these anxieties as the result of a pact with The Devil.

T H E TOW E R MILEY CYRUS AS THE TOWER REPRESENTS AMBITIONS BUILT FROM FALSE PREMISES. Lightning strikes and flames burst from The Tower’s windows representing a sudden upheaval and forced change. Two of Miley’s personas - her Disney “good girl” and remade wild side, leap from the tower. The Tower signifies darkness and destruction on a physical plane. Miley’s world was turned upside down when her six year relationship with Liam Hemsworth shattered over cheating rumors. Already in the process of experimenting with an edgier sound, Miley suddenly and impulsively shed her pop princess image and re-emerged with a daring and androgynous alter ego. Fans were shocked wondering if the new Miley was a PR stunt, or emergence of her authentic self. Representing ambitions built on false premises, The Tower’s lightning bolt breaks existing forms in order to make room for new ones. It represents a sudden glimpse of truth and flash of inspiration. Perhaps Miley’s brief wild stint was media constructed and her authentic self lies somewhere in between?
XVI
TH E TOWER M ILEY C YR U S
UPRIGHT The Tower represents an unpleasant truth suddenly and shockingly interrupting one’s comfort zone. It forces the affected to really begin thinking about their purpose and identity in a humbling, yet frightening experience. Miley’s first awakening was at the dawn of her “Bangerz” era where she completely shed her Disney association. It was almost as if she jumped from her literal “Climb” to Disney royalty. Miley’s second realization was when she discovered that she no longer wanted to succumb to Hollywood’s hyper-sexualized expectations.
REVERSED Reversal indicates one is delaying the necessary ‘destruction,’ required to bring about positive change. Miley expressed that she does not want Hollywood pressure to control how and when she can change. She stated “You should be able to change and be who you are at any time. Like, you should not be glued to gender, to age, to race; those things should not define you. We are born as a blank canvas, and your job on this planet is to take the time to paint it the way you want, and you can f*cking scrape it off and start over again as many times as you want.” Miley’s falling personas correspond to the chained prisoners in the Devil card breaking free from bondage.

T H E STA R DEMI LOVATO AS THE STAR EMBRACES RENEWED COURAGE, FAITH AND UNDERSTANDING. The Star shows a nude Demi bearing a bowl of water within a small pool. Pouring the water represents replenishment and regeneration: two themes ever present in Demi’s recent work. Water lilies bloom around her symbolizing cultivation. Above Demi is a large eight sided star surrounded by seven smaller ones. This number represents the need to open one’s chakras in order to cleanse their aura. After years of struggling with bipolar disorder, bulimia, self-harm and addiction, Demi made a conscious effort to retreat from the music world and find inner peace through rehabilitation. Her self-healing journey has made her more “Confident” than ever, and she has even attributed that adjective to the title of her latest release. Demi now makes a vulnerable public effort to prioritize her physical, mental and spiritual health allowing courage, fulfillment and inspiration to shine through.
XVI I
T H E STA R DEMI LOVATO
UPRIGHT Now that Demi has grasped a better understanding of herself, she can confidently mentor others. Serving as an American Idol judge has helped her discover that her transformation has the power to positively affect others. The Star represents motivational destiny and trusting one’s self. “When I went to rehab, my manager said you know, ‘You can either keep this private or you can share this with the world, and hopefully, someone can learn from your struggles.’ And when I heard that I thought, ‘I think it’s more important that people learn from my struggles than to keep it to myself.’”
REVERSED The reversed Star suggests that one’s spiritual mission is distorted. Instead of hope, the reversed Star generates feelings despair and discouragement. It tends to encourage dwelling and influences people to give up on their dreams. Demi admits that during her relapses she would attempt at sabotaging everything around her in order to sabotage herself. This loss of faith is characteristic of the reversed Star’s warning which encourages identifying the true root of the problem. For Demi, much of this realization revolved around proper diagnosis of bipolar disorder and coinciding treatment.

T H E M O ON SELENA GOMEZ AS THE MOON REPRESENTS THE “SHADOW SELF” OR UNCONSCIOUS MIND CONSISTING OF REPRESSED WEAKNESSES, SHORTCOMINGS AND INSTINCTS. Although The Moon shines The Sun’s reflected light, it’s more so a dim illusion. This vision illustrates Selena Gomez’s fame journey which like many pop stars before her began at the Disney Channel. Framed as a bubbly, positive teenager, Selena was typical Disney royalty until she signed with Interscope for the release of her first solo album. Something in Selena was changing as a somber, mysterious persona emerged. Selena is shown shrouded by fog, as a crayfish appears next to her symbolizing revelations from her inner depths. The path between two towers guides the way to her subconscious. Selena’s eventual lupus diagnosis triggered a lifelong struggle with anxiety and depression. Despite the illnesses’ negative impact, they helped trigger consciousness of her tendency to outwardly project fear and anxiety. This realization continues to help Selena discover her authentic self and channel her energy into more positive efforts.
XV I I I
TH E M OON SELENA GOMEZ
UPRIGHT The Moon represents projecting fear from the past into the present and future through an array of disturbing, anxious and overwhelming emotions. This produces a negative block in one’s personality that requires a “purge and restore” to let go of negativity. Part of Selena’s anxiety revolves around the perceptions that formed about her during her career “I started getting known for things that weren’t (related to) my work,” the 25-year-old recalled. “That’s when my passion started to really feel like it was going further and further away. And that scared me.”
REVERSED The reversed Moon indicates that one has recently experienced a time of self-deception, illusion, fears and anxiety that is starting to subside. It also indicates potential emotional issues beneath the surface that also need to be dealt with. Selena admits fearing that she might never completely overcome depression and anxiety. She is open about her creative journey being a work in progress that she has not yet mastered. Discovering her true self through explorations of her emotions in relation to her art may help her overcome these fears.

THE SUN JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AS THE SUN REPRESENTS A POSITIVE FORCE FULL OF WARMTH, SUCCESS AND VITALITY. The Sun is an image of optimism and a source of life. Dancing joyfully to his single “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” Justin represents the joyous inner spirit that manifests when we are in tune with our truest Self. The sun rays in the background represent action and vibration, and the sunflowers in the foreground represent life and fruitfulness. Justin is, and always has been, a rare star that consistently exhibits an aura of joy and maturity. He never reveals more than he needs to, and as a result lives a relatively normal life. By maintaining his true and humble personality, Justin is a powerful example that dreams really can come true.
XIX
TH E SUN J U STIN TIM BER L A K E
UPRIGHT The Sun provides one with strength and success, ensuring positive energy and great happiness. This helps with navigating tough times and staying true to oneself. The Sun is also positive and goal-oriented, illuminating the path to success. Justin faced very little media scrutiny over his two decade career with the exception of his controversial 2004 Super Bowl performance with Janet Jackson. He was able to handle that situation with grace, allowing it to quickly fade into the back of the public’s mind.
REVERSED The reversed Sun finds it hard to stay positive during a difficult situation. It can represent setbacks that lead to self doubt and questioning of one’s true purpose. Justin has for the most part lived a painless life in the limelight in comparison to his contemporaries. He does admit that fatherhood “broke him down at first” because it forced him to confront problems with his own upbringing, and proved a challenging balance.

JUDGMENT SIMON COWELL AS JUDGMENT REPRESENTS ENTERING A SIGNIFICANT PERIOD IN ONE’S PERSONAL JOURNEY. Judgment shows two American Idol contestants singing a duet in order to appeal to the show’s most critical judge. Simon sits high above them representing authority and governance over the next step of their musical careers. He symbolizes the reinvention and inner vision required to achieve continued personal success. His mentorship allows for the quiet reflection that can help trigger these actions. Judgment helps generate epiphanies that place people on a more productive path to living their true lives. As American Idol’s harshest judge, Simon wasted no one’s time with his candor. “In real auditions you can’t tell someone who is terrible that they’re good and promise them that they’re going to become a star. When we did the show, I would behave as I did in real life. I didn’t take it too seriously when they were bad so I found most situations quite funny.”
XX
J U D G EM E N T SIMON COWELL
UPRIGHT Judgment influences one to embrace new possibilities leading to a more fulfilling life with potential to offer inspiration and hope to others. This suggests that one has reviewed and evaluated past experiences in order to learn. Simon reflects on his reputation with frequent embarrassment. He claims to have never purposely strived to become the “nasty” judge. He states his reputation is “sort of a compliment” but that he finds it “excruciating.” Nevertheless, he is taking what he learned from Idol and the X-Factor, and starting a new role as judge on America’s Got Talent.
REVERSED Reversed, Judgment suggests one might be indulging in self doubt. This form of judgment creates a restrictive mindset which can hold one back from important new opportunities.

T H E WOR L D BRUNO MARS AS THE WORLD DANCES AT THE COMPLETION OF AN OPPORTUNISTIC JOURNEY. At the center of the World is a dancing Bruno Mars, rejoicing in the completion of his third world tour and the new beginnings it promises. He represents the opposite of The Martyr, and looks infinitely outward instead of inwards. In each of his hands are a wand or baton, representative of evolution and balance. He is surrounded by a thick, green wreath, symbolic of success, victory, achievement and accomplishment. The World represents the infinite rewards of positive effort in improving both ourselves and those around us. Bruno has held a mostly positive Hollywood image and recently claimed the top Billboard ranking for number one radio hits by a solo male artist.
X XI
TH E WORLD BRUNO MARS
UPRIGHT The World signifies completion, achievement and fulfillment. Efforts are finally paying off as one completes a major life cycle. Any hardships and challenges experienced along the way have only cultivated more strength and wisdom. Notable life cycles may include career milestones, projects, degrees or even relationships. All inspire new beginnings. Despite achieving his Billboard status faster than any male artist since Elvis Presley, Bruno is still in the infancy of his career. Only three studio albums deep, Bruno truly has the world at his fingertips.
REVERSED Reversed, The World suggests not taking all of the steps necessary to achieve one’s goals. It might imply tendencies to take the easiest or quickest path without thinking of long-term consequences. Although Bruno’s celebrity reputation reads mostly clean, he is occasionally haunted by a 2013 arrest for possession of cocaine. Drunk and high in Las Vegas, the arrest took place during his almost immediate rise to fame. He still cringes at the media’s questioning of his decision to smile in that infamous mugshot.
