mercado plaza Mercado Plaza is a new public space bult in the Mission neighborhood of San Francisco. San Francisco Public Spaces have come to life with the surge of street food, open-air markets, and community events. The Mercado Plaza supports existing nighttime farmers market on Bartlett street and other community events. The design, consists of 8 new pergola structures at the 21st street intersection, new street and pergola lighting, a new marquee, a narrowing the vehicular lane and re-doing the streetscape with new trees, pavers and traffic buffers. The canopies are desined wiht electrical and lighting to support farmers and night markets. when: Opened in 2017 where: San Francisco, CA who: work completed at Rebar role: lead designer and project manager
Built for Swissnex San Francisco, this parklet is designed to host content and conversation. The boxes and screens of the ‘event machine’ move easilty to reconfigure the space for many uses

paladino
As a lead designer and project manager for this 2000 SF office renovation I sourced alternative materials and lead a successful design-build process for the 2-floor office space. The majority of the materials are reclaimed locally, the wood from local gymnasiums which is attached using plastic packaging
straps collected from the loading docks of local retailers. The woven wood screens were constructed during an architect-client work day. The majority of the space experienced minimal interventions, keeping the design focus on the new conference and entry spaces.

I lead the architectural and system design for a portable, largely off-grid spa built from shipping containers for a San Francisco startup. Conceived as a short-term activation of urban sites awaiting redevelopment, and ready to go where site infrastructure may be lacking, SOAK provides the core experience of the traditional bathhouse in microcosm, recast with an industrial aesthetic.

st. pauls episcopal church
I was part of a small design team designing the renovation of St Paul’s Episcopal church. We designed a renovation and new entry addition to an iconic mid-century Northwest Modernist church, designed by Steinhart/Theriault in 1962. The worn 50 year old structure required a new liturgical space for gatherings around a new full-immersion
baptismal font, as well as building envelope, accessibility, structural and energy upgrades. Careful choices about stripping away the years of accumulated renovations that had marred the powerful space were required.

spaceplates
For four months I worked on the design development and building of SPACEPLATES. This SPACEPLATE structure consists of hexagons joined along their edges only. The resulting Y-shaped vertices between three hexagons meeting in any given joint results in an ideal distribution of forces along the edges of the structure. This is a new way of building double
curved surfaces with minimal material use and is based on the geometry found in animal shells such as the sea urchin. The result was a beautiful hexagonal room of experimental geometry, construction and acoustics. The prototype has been dismantled as a precursor for a larger floating construction in development. Several other SPACEPLATE constructions have been built out of wood, plastic, metal.

I also worked on the development of the polycarbonate SPACEPLATE construciton, currently being used as a greenhouse in Copenhagen. The SPACEPLATES polycarbonate prototype was CNC fabricated and is connected by fold-over flanges with a mechanical connection ‘sewing’ the flanges together.
This technique and geometry has been used to make polycarbonate greenhouses, and can also be used to make metal structures and larger gathering structures.

wards cove Wards Cove is located in the urban residential Eastlake neighborhood along the eastern shore of Lake Union in Seattle. For 100 years, the waterfront property was the Seattle base of the salmon packing operation of Wards Cove Packing Company. In 2002, the company decided to develop its waterfront and renovate the marine industrial warehouse for new uses. Site and marina building renovations were completed in January 2009. Atelierjones preserved the property’s rich history, incorporating form and material from preexisting structures into the overall site. I worked on the design team from concept through to construciton.

Commissioned by the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, Nomadic Grove is a meditation on rootedness in the relentlessly changing city. To sit, relaxed, looking up at a tree framing the sky is a simple and profound human experience, but one in surprisingly short supply in modern cities. Perhaps it is because trees resist the city’s constant motion.

Nomadic Grove is an experimental landscape that straddles the poles of stability and movement. The Grove consists of an archipelago of gem-like islands suspended low on wheels, floating just above the surface of Jessie Square. Fragments of this floating terrain are solidly but temporarily anchored in one of several compositions that change from week to week.

post car travel agency With a grant from The Storefront Lab, Kelly Gregory and I created the Post Car Travel Agency planning door-to-door bicycle + transit adventures in the San Francisco Bay Area. We provide all the functions of a travel agency: planning, booking, giving advice on outfitting and routes. Post Car Travel Agency was conceived because cycle touring has encouraged us to test our physical limits and expand our social and geographical sense of place. Cycletour has introduced us to a deepened connection to the landscape through slower travel and a relationship with public interfaces (transit, etc.). The Post Car Travel Agency served as a Bay Area hub for ten days of presentations, classes, and retail space to inspire bicycle adventures. We see the StoreFrontLab as a jumping off point for a larger discussion about modern travel further installations of the Post Car Travel Agency. when: August 2012 where: San Francisco, CA who: Roving Studio, Swift Industries, The Storefront Lab

a measured landscape a measured landscape, 2007 2007 National AIAS Research Award date: 2007 location: Lawrence, Kansas role: academic thesis, University of Kansas
I sought to answer questions about the ways that quantifiable acts of land measurement in the United States have deeply affected the way we own and occupy our land, and ultimately the way we dwell today. I studied historical acts of public land measurement in the United States, locating dividing lines in the modern landscape. To better understand the ways that invisible ownership boundaries affect our dwelling spaces, I conducted interviews in three suburban neighborhoods in Lawrence, Kansas. I developed a series of ever-evolving design interventions blurring ownership boundaries to encourage neighborhoods to live closer together.
