Kristin Seymour Response to Exercise 1
I had the honor to remix one of Pui’s spreads from her sight and sound project. I chose the spread about Denial because I was drawn to the photo. First of all it is in black and white, which is visually appealing and aesthetically goes well with the emotion trying to be conveyed. I chose to leave the image black and white of course. The text included in this spread was I believe the lyrics from the song it was matched with. “Lets start over. I’ll try to do it right this time around. It’s not over.” The text is already separated into three thoughts and three sentences as well as the image visually being separated into three. The two people’s separate hands and the middle where their hands touch. I chose to break up the text and image into three parts each. I chose specifically to put the touching of hands in the gutter because it is not only the center of the book but also it is two people touching as the two pages are touching. I am pleased with the end product of the remix. When I talked to Pui about what I had done to her original spread, she really liked the version I made. I combined what were two separate pages because of the format of the image and text into a spread. Now the image and text were together rather then separated by the limits of the page. She liked how the new format was more fluid and gave it more movement across the pages. This matched the song’s composition itself. Pui also said that the breaking up of the photo helps convey the meaning because denial as a feeling is a lot of “disconnect and distortion”. She said, “when someone is in denial, they don’t really see the bigger picture and refuse to accept reality”. I had never thought about how I separated the image in this way but I am glad that an outside viewer can feel the emotion of denial in the image itself. Overall, I am happy with the new spread I mad from Pui’s raw materials and I am happy that she liked it and saw not only the intentions I was going for but also other things I never thought of.
