ave you ever thought about how art affects you every day? How it inspires you? How it intervenes all aspects of your daily life. From your playlists on Spotify to the movie you saw last night. From the book you are reading to the pictures hanging on your walls. From the earrings you got for your birthday, to the clothes you choose to wear in the morning. It is beauty, it´s passion, and not at least it´s fashion. For me, it all interacts, and I find my inspiration in the most peculiar places. Where do you find yours? We are very proud to introduce you to Wiksén’s world of fashion and the inspiration behind the SS13 collection in Wiksén Magazine No 1. For designer Rikke, the source of inspiration is everything. For every piece of art she makes there is a theme behind it. For each collection she creates, there is certain atmosphere, a combination of thoughts, ideas and creativity influenced by the art of the theme that inspires her. For the SS13 collection Dreamgirls, she has used the attitude and rhythm of the Motown vibe, the 70s style of that crazy, yet sophisticated era. This combined with an exceptional use of exclusive materials, the most distinctive selection of colours and fabric with an emphasis on exceptional details and flawless silhouettes, she has created this collection as an immaculate piece of art. We want you to get a small insight on what is going on in the creative universe of Wiksén and the people involved

Enjoy the interview with the fantastic, stylish and playful model Ada, and also discover what inspires our talented and creative make up artist Ida. Let yourself being drawn into the sexy atmosphere of Motown and fall in love with the fabulous fashion editorial made by the excellent photographer Kristoffer. Illustrator Anja Grøndal has created the beautiful drawings of our collection of the Maisha Mema Cotton basics. Read more about the Kenyan based organisation that works with child sponsorship programs in the slums of Nairobi at page 29. We have also offered other Norwegian brands, within different segments of the fashion industry, to get the chance to market themselves with an add in the magazine. I find it so important to work together, share knowledge and connect the synergies that we have in this little small country of Norway. The SS13 collection, Dreamgirls. A piece of art I for certain can´t wait to wear next spring. I simply adore this collection, and I´m pretty sure you will as well. Enjoy!

The Supremes feisty sexiness and the soulful independence of Aretha Franklin is a stark transition from Edie Sedgewicks humble coolness and Patti Smiths rock’n roll attitude. The contrasts between the two genres in the same period are perfectly combined in Wikséns chic expression for Spring/Summer 2013.

INTERVIEW with model & blogger

Ada Kristine Nielsen

We love Ada Kristine Nielsen’s sophisticated yet edgy taste of style within art and fashion. The beautiful and characteristic model is the face of our SS13 campaign and we simply adore her natural, funny and positive attitude. We wanted to know a few more details of what is moving around in the charming model and blogger´s life.

Wiksén : SS13 : Interview with Ada Kristine Nielsen

A small selection is Richard Avedon, Lars Botten, Steven Meisel, Massimo Leardini and Helmut Newton. And my list could go on forever. The music you love to dance to? And what do you prefer being kissed to? I love to dance, so there is not much that doesn´t make my hips move. But they will move a tiny bit extra to the sound of house and electronica, preferably with a LOT of bass and a good beat. Paul Kalkbrenner, Grimes, CLMD, just to mention a few. If someone plays ”Baby by me” with 50 cent, I cannot sit still. I´ll prefer to kiss to electronica. Thleilaxu Kunharas Mix - Genuine or music from the French DJ Hol Baumann. Then I´m sold…

Who and what inspire you in everyday life? Fascinating people and photography in all its shapes and aspects are a huge source of inspiration in my life. What does fashion mean to you? It is like playing in a beautiful box of sand. What is your favourite piece from the Wiksén SS13 collection? I find it impossible to just choose one piece. And I can say with certainty that there are at least three pieces that will find their way to my wardrobe next summer. The light pink collage sweater, the leather pants and the white blouse with the beautiful lace on the backside. I can hardly wait! What is it that you look for in the clothes you fall in love with? I´m a complete sucker for luxurious materials. Wonderful colours and patterns are also a must! Favourite designers? Ralf Simons, Phoebe Philo and Tom Ford, did I mention Rikke Wiksén?

21

If you could choose to live in another era, which would that have been? I would definitely choose the 1960s /70s in either Paris or New York. I´ve completely lost count of how many times I have watched “A Single Man” by Tom Ford, which takes place in this era. The women were elegant and feminine in an edgy kind of way. Jane Birkin, Birgit Bardot, Edie Sedgwick, just to mention a few of my favourites. If you could have one day with one person, historical or still alive, who would that be? Carine Roitfield! If there is one woman I really adore if must be her. She has such an inspiring personality and career. And her style is simply immaculate. Mama Mia! And what would you wear? A loose cream coloured blouse with discreet embroideries, a couple of worn jeans tucked up by the ankle, leopard heals from Givenchy and simple heart of gold around my neck. What is in your opinion, the ups and downs with working as a model? One of the best things I love about modelling is the opportunity I get to play an act. Dive into a different

What makes you angry? Laziness, sordidness, dishonesty and people that never keep their promises. What makes you happy? That is so much! Beautiful pictures, music, spontaneity, my blog, doing a photo shoot yoga, coffee, fascinating people, good humour, eating berries, dancing, this list could go on forever… I actually became really happy just by writing this!

role. Creating something beautiful/provoking/ exiting together with a team. I also love the chance I get to see whole new designer collections for seasons to come before anyone else. And of course being able to work with so many talented people! I cannot avoid mentioning the fixation the modelling industry has on looks. If you work as a model and have low self-esteem about yourself and insecurities of the way you look, I can easily see that this can cause further issues. As a model, I think it is important to have other interests, hobbies or careers besides working as a model. Fill your head with stuff that interest and inspires you. That makes you more fit for doing the job. Fill yourself up with inspiration, confidence and creativity! Do you have any favourite artists? And if so, who would you love to have on your wall? I have realized that I need a huge apartment with lots of wall space. I live and breathe for art. Everything from Stina Person´s fashion illustrations to Nick Brandt and David Benjamin Sherry’s art of nature. But most of all I love fashion photography, preferably with an aspect of eroticism in shapes of nudity or light and colour.

I recommend this dress because you can wear it all year around, and it is so easy to dress up and down. It is original with the painty print and effortlessly cool with the comfortable shape and side seams pockets.

Camillas first choice The new leather collection is just amazing, and I have fallen crazy in love with these sexy pants. The leather is incredibly soft and delicate.

If I were going for a night out I would choose these cool wedges that will make my legs look really long. I don’t like to feel overdressed, so the leatherjacket will pull it down a bit. This jacket is soft and has a great fit! The little pink splashes on the shoulders make it one of a kind.

On a daily basis I would pick some more comfortable and rough boots, with or without stockings. A knitted sweater turns the dress in to a skirt, and a cool earring makes the outfit complete.

Combined with a basic singlet and the metal pallets vest, this outfit makes me want to hit the dance floor and rock all night! I would spike it even more up with a pair of smashing stilettos and this colourful purse. I love this eye-catching bracelet, and this one from Goldmine, made by my friend Line is simply outstanding. To cover up, I´d choose this white and silver Wiksén jacket that is decorated with small coins. I can be used with almost everything, and is a perfect companion to this outfit.

For a more low key look, and also for the colder days, I would combine this soft sweater from Wikséns AW12 collection with the leather pants. To add some flavor I´d go for this necklace from Goldmine and pair it up with a couple of sexy red boots. The black coat has a fantastic fit, and looks very nice in combination with the leather. For work I prefer a larger bag, and this one is ideal for both my laptop and notebooks.

CREATIVE COOPERATION with the children at

Last year Rikke Wiksén visited Maisha Mema in Kenya. Since then Wiksén and Maisha Mema has had cooperation with the creative children in the slums of Nairobi. For this spring summer their drawings has spiced up a part of Wikséns basic line, which has an exclusive fit with the most comfortable fabric.

T

he Maisha Mema Family functioned for many years as a foster home, but was registered as a Children’s home in 2007. The couple Jonny and Marianne treat the children there and they have per July 2012 nine girls and nine boys - as though they were their own children. For 12 years they were situated in the Old Doonholm estate in Nairobi, but in December 2011 they moved to Tigoni outside Nairobi where they have a big property including a field where they can play football and volleyball. Two housemothers and one housefather living with them to help with the daily work, and of practical reasons they have a girls’ house and a boys’ house. Marianne and Jonny also live at the same property. The children eat breakfast before they go to school, get lunch at school, and in the evening they all eat supper together. The children come from dysfunctional, abusive or no families at all. The best Marianne and Jonny can give them is love and care within the frames of a family. They also go to a very good school in Tigoni, and should have every possibility to manage well in life.

meeting-place for the children in our program. They get some help with homework, tuition, participate in sports and games, and do various activities like arts and crafts, singing and dancing. They are covered medically; get school lunch three days a week and lunch in Clubhouse on Saturdays. The Social Worker is the daily leader of the Clubhouse, and they have five more workers there. Per July 2012 they support around 250 children from the Soweto slums all of whom are in school! The activities in the Clubhouse also run in the school holidays thereby hinder the kids in falling back to destructive habits like drugs, casual sex and roaming around. This way, the Club-house activities are definitely also a social rehabilitation program. And last year, four kids from Soweto started their public University education! (Together with one from the Maisha Mema family).

Clubhouse in the Soweto slums and the activities around this, is the couples main outreach work, and started during the autumn of 1998. It is an educational place as well as a social

INTERVIEW with Make-up-artist

Ida Engstrøm We had a little chat with Ida Engstrøm; the inspirational make up artist that always uses her great creativity and perfection within her work. Wiksén have worked with her at several occasions and Ida´s smiling attitude makes a fantastic vibe at every fashion show or photo-shoot.

She has also been on a few more fascinating sets, from doing make up for a photo-shoot high up in the alps of Sunnmøre to hectic fashion shows for Wiksén and other brands. She has worked with stars like Mona Grudt, Veronica Maggio, Celina Middelfart, Hanneli Mustaparta, Jenny Skavlan, Mariann Rosa and many many more. ”One of my favourite faces is Clemence Posey. I´m more drawn to personal features and the uncommon face, rather than the perfect symmetry. ”It is always important for her how it all intervenes; hair, make up and clothes creating the final look. The one cannot be without the other. ”I don´t necessary follow trends”, she continues”, but the inspiration around me is important, so of course the trends are part of that. ”

31

But spending hours in front of the mirror putting her own make up on, is not a part of Ida´s ritual, ”I´m pretty boring when it comes to my own make up, but I find it very important to pay extra attention to the skin.” Most of her inspiration Ida get from films, one favourite is Factory Girl, with the amazing 60s make up. ”Also Tim Burtons films are a huge source of inspiration. The movie Runaways gives me the coolest 70s vibe”, she adds. When it comes to favourite make up brands Ida´s top list consists of Lancôme, Laura Mercier and Armani, but almost all brands have some unique products that she always has with her. Ida herself prefers a natural makeup look, and focuses on extenuate her best features. ”Most women still tend to choose the wrong colour of foundation. Typical Norwegian women have a bit of a too strong relationship with self tanning and bronzer, which simply makes their skin look orange”, she points out.

Photo: Truls Quale

T

he everyday of a makeup artist is varied and exciting,” Ida, vividly explains. No jobs are the same and that makes Ida´s days totally different. In her opinion, that is also one of the most positive aspects with working as she does. ”You get to meet new peopleand be challenged at different projects every time,” she describes full of enthusiasm and continues, ”I think one of my favourite projects was the summer of 2007, where I worked with Vendela Kirsebom on the Top Model set, and were responsible for her make up. That was one incredible summer!”

Ida loves the clean lines of Rikke Wiksén´s design; the luxurious feel of the fabrics combined with the beautiful silhouettes is a must for all women to have in their closet. ”And I have to admit that the AW12 Chelsea Hotel is my favourite”, she finishes smilingly.

CONTRIBUTOR #2

Name: Kristoffer Drivdal Skjæringrud Occupaton: Fashion- and Beauty photographer Website: www.ksfoto.net Bio: After high school I started working as a retoucher for my father who is a wedding/portrait photographer. Having almost never touched a camera, I still got interested in creating my own photos, so after a few months at his studio, I started picking it up myself to shoot. I soon realized that weddings and portraits were far away from what I wanted to do and given my ever existing love for music, I started shooting bands for CD covers and for some music magazines but it didn’t take long to realize that what I really wanted to shoot was my other passion and what is often considered the hardest; Fashion!

Name: Anja Grøndal Occupation: Illustrator Bio: Being born and raised in Bærum, I´m now living in Oslo where I also studied at the University. I´m educated within graphic design and illustration, in addition to have been studying several courses at the University in Oslo. On a daily basis I work as a graphic designer in Oslo. My main interests lies within the areas of graphic design, fashion design and illustration. I find my inspiration in all that surrounds me; the city, people on the street, movies, artists, books, magazines, nature, and animals and within the small details of everyday life. Both beauty and ugliness can be a source of inspiration for me.

I started my own company in 2007 but in 2009 I realized that I wanted a beak because I thought it was really hard getting into the business. So I went to Paris for a “year off” where I studied fashion and commercial photography. Early this year I made a connection with Mademoiselle Model Agency and they sent me models for test shoots twice a week. This helped me built my portfolio quite fast and it really helped me getting in touch with the clients I wanted back home. My base is at the moment in Oslo, but I am also represented in New York, London and Paris by Intime Agency. What was in your opinion the most exciting part of working with Wiksén? I think the most exciting part about this shoot was when I realized the theme Rikke and Camilla wanted. I liked the idea right away and started making moodboards, listening to 70’s music and doing research on artists, hair and makeup that you see on their album covers and such. I always like to go into depth to understand my client’s thoughts and ideas, so when I realized that they wanted a combination with 70’s style and modern style, I felt confident that this shoot was going to become a great one. And it did! Did you still have time to enjoy the summer? What is your favourite summer destination? Well, the only summer day we’ve had in Oslo this year was the day for this shoot, so I enjoyed summer yeah, hehe.

But jokes aside, I’ve been blessed with having the opportunity to join a DJ crew for their summer tour to shoot every step they take, both live and on tour. I also did this last summer and I’m loving it! Even though it’s work, I consider it a vacation as they are my friends and we’re traveling for weeks, playing at sold out festivals. My favourite summer destination has got to be a big city. I enjoy the beach, but I’m always drawn towards the major cities and given the fact that I’ve studied in Paris with people from 24 different nationalities, I always like to travel around the world to see my friends so Paris, New York and London are my favourite holiday destinations. What do you love the most about your job? And what is the most boring part of it? What I love the most about my job is definitely to work with other professionals. I have a true passion for make-up, hair and fashion so to be around people who does this the best is to me what I love the most. In addition to that, of course the excitement of entering a set you’ve been planning for weeks or months and getting that “this is finally it” feeling is always amazing! The boring part? If there is one, it must be the time between the photos are done and when it will get published! Having the photos on my computer but still not being able to show them to others, often for months, is sometimes really frustrating.

What was in your opinion the most exciting part of working with Wiksén? I’m very excited about having been chosen to do the drawings of Wiksén’s mini collection for Maesha Mema, a charity project for a children’s home in Nairobi. I like the fact that, in addition to doing their main collection, Wiksén use their creative talent to help people in need. For the drawings, I was given full freedom and encouraged to express my own visual style. I am grateful for the opportunity I got to work with such an established and professional fashion brand. I also like this original idea of doing a look book in combination with an editorial magazine, and I can hardly wait to see the !nished product! Did you still have time to enjoy the summer? What is your favourite summer destination? I’ve been working all summer, but I’ve still had some time of now and then; a few weekend trips to Kragerø, a beautiful and pittoresque small town by the ocean. In the summer it’s is filled with tourists, artists, concerts and festivals. There is always a good ambiance in that town, all year long. One of my favourite places to be in the summer is right here in Oslo, on Hovedøya, one of the many small islands in the Oslo fjord. If the weater is good, there are no better places to be! I’ve found my own “private” spot overlooking the harbour, the city hall and the fortress, where I can watch the boats and ferries passing by. It’s like being in the coutryside and in the city at the same time. It’s a perfect place to spend on a warm summer

day; with friends, swimming, eating and enjoying good wine! When I travel abroad, I prefer to go to European cities, and Paris is one of my absolute favourites. Also, Berne in Switzerland is a very charming and humble city, not too big, a river running through it, surrounded by snow covered alps. The old town there is really worth a visit! What do you love the most about your job? And what is the most boring part of it? Actually, I like every stage of a job. Everything from doing research, collecting info and reference, testing different drawing techiques and deciding on which is the best suited for the assignment, to the sketching and !nishing part on the computer. It’s a learning process every time. The very best part is when I’m really satis!ed with a drawing, after having spent a long time working on it. There are no boring parts, but sometimes the strict deadlines can be stressful. On the other hand, they can be a good thing, as it pushes me to work more structured and efficiently.

Name: Jørund A. Eek Occupation: Graphic Designer / Ad-guy Bio: I’ve always loved a good story, and that developed into a love of visual communication and advertising. How to get a message across in a targeted and efficient way is a pretty intriguing field of study, and if you can wrap it all up in the most appealing way possible – all the better. So while I did a Master of Communication focusing on advertising theory and strategy, I filled it up with as many creative subjects as I could. I’ve been dabbling with design tools like Adobe’s creative suite since middle school, but I also started challenging myself with a bit of drawing and some more in-depth typesetting classes. After a year and a half I left Melbourne with a Masters with Distinction and headed back to the slightly nippier north. I started freelancing as a graphic designer and moved to Oslo where I’m currently working tightly with an ad agency as well as taking on my own clients. What was in your opinion the most exciting part of working with Wiksén? I really liked the theme, and it’s always exciting to work with a new client, but I still have to say the most exciting part was the people. Everyone involved have been really passionate and excited about the project and that makes being a part of it a pleasure. To work with a group of people as aesthetically focused as this – I love it.

What do you love the most about your job? And what is the most boring part of it? A brand new, exciting project when everything is just pure potential, and then to see everything come together as great people pour their passions into making something great. Nothing beats being a part of that. The most boring part? Working on a soulless project just to make the rent. But I guess you could say it’s what puts all the fun projects into perspective

Did you still have time to enjoy the summer? I enjoy my work, so yes - I enjoyed my summer. I’ve been working on three different projects through the summer, so I haven’t had time for a long vacation or anything, but I moved the office out to the country and made sure to slow down a bit. I also got three days of great concerts at the Slottsfjell festival, which pretty much completed my summer this year. What is your favourite summer destination? That’s a hard question. I think as long as I can just get away from my everyday surroundings and get a bit of change I’m pretty happy. If I can experience something new and exciting and still get a couple of days of just chilling out completely, I could go anywhere.
