Cognitive Science Research Center

Cognitive Science Research Center The prominent building site, in front of a neo-gothic church in the heart of Vienna, combined with the requirement of designing a research and teaching facility with approximately 30,000m², creates a challenging setting for this project. Preserving and even underlining the historic line of sight to the church’s main façade, the building develops to both sides of the axis. The common ground floor accesses the two wings. The upper floors are arranged in a “fanned-out”-way, creating unique work and study environments through skylights on every floor and spacious roof gardens. Additionally, the arrangement allows for large covered public areas.

DIN A 4U

DIN A 4U The paper shop is located in a 6x6x6m space within an existing shopping mall. It consists solely of horizontally arranged wooden slats of spruce, with the only exception being the necessary moving components. The product display elements, as well as the door, the stairs and the gallery, are integral parts of the shops faรงade. Above head level, the slats of two neighbouring faรงades are increasingly turned towards each other to create an interwoven recessed roof-like closure of the space. The lighting concept emphasises the structure of the shell and creates an intriguing pattern of light and shadow.

Matryoshka - Module

Matryoshka-Module Designed for the Olympic Winter Games at Sochi, the matryoshka-module is a transportable, flexible unit, which can be used as a hotel room, or combined to create a fully-fledged housing unit. It consists of four elements which are nested in one another for transportation. Unloaded onto a base, provided at site, the unit has to be expanded by pulling the smallest element laterally. This innermost element may either be equipped with all necessary sanitary installations or an entire kitchen. While the initial design concept was a cube, a “pie slice shape was proven more functional in terms of transport and spatial requirements.

Homes That Live

Homes That Live This residential project is located in a dense inner-city area of Vienna. Based on one common ground level, which is used for commercial purposes, two buildings arise. Each building has its own staircase, and a faรงade facing towards a public street. The increasing recess of the upper floors, together with the inclined outlines of the faรงades, creates the characteristic shape of the building. This design allows for maximal

Young & Old

Young & Old This project is perceived as a social housing complex with a community centre, in a troubled neighbourhood in Los Angeles. The target demographic is specific – grandparents who are living with and caring for their grandchildren. In order to create protected and traffic-free open spaces for both children and the elderly, the entire compound consists of two levels. The ground floor is used for access to the dwellings and private parking, and the elevated level creates a semi-private communal space with varied levels of privacy. The two levels are connected both via the living areas and the community centre. The design considerations specific to this demographic deal mainly with issues of accessibility, security, and balance between common and private spaces. Thus, ramps are also an essential element for creating a barrier-free and playful environment.

Film Museum

Film Museum Situated at a busy Montreal corner lot, two freeform buildings shelter a film museum and a cinema. The two objects are connected by a common axis - a shallow water basin – upon which they seem to rest. In between the two buildings, a staircase travels beneath the basin to the entrance of the complex. The underground level shelters the common infrastructure and eventually leads the visitors to the exhibition area to one side and the cinema to the other.

Forest - River - House

Forest - River - House As an information centre addressing the local flora and fauna, the building is situated in the middle of the woods and directly above a creek. This location allows the centre to function additionally as a bridge, which continues to be viable even when the centre is closed. The combination of ramps is an essential part of the educative nature trail. It leads visitors through different layers of vegetation, and halfway into the main closed exhibition space, 11.5 ft. above ground. On this level, glass elements in the floor allow for a vertical observation of the river.

Hillock Waves

Hillock Waves In the village of Purbach, situated close to the nature reserve of Neusiedler Lake and known for its long history of winemaking, a new centre of attraction would assist in promoting the natural and man-made qualities of the region. The layout of the proposed construction includes a wine bar and shop, a tourist information point, and an exhibition area for the nature reserve. The building site is located at the front of a village square, entirely surrounded by the portals of wine-cellars under historical protection. The iconic wave-like structure of the portals, along with their overgrown roofs and sandstone faรงades provided inspiration to the design. The structure containing the wine bar and shop, as well as the tourist information point, is of a modern cubic shape. However, the overgrown roof of the exhibition area forms a hill- or wave-like contour, representing the earth. It rises seamlessly from the village square and its landscape, and is interspersed by narrow and protruding cubic glass structures. A system of ramps is situated next to the narrow glass panels, and the natural exhibits are on both sides of the ramps.

Memorial Maly Trostinez

Memorial Maly Trostinez The memorial commemorates the killing of approximately 13,500 Austrian Jews by the Nazi regime in the woods of Maly Trostinez near Minsk between 1942 and 1944. The forested area is bordered by intersecting logging roads, forming a triangle. After being brought in ten trains from Vienna to Minsk, the victims were immediately transported to Maly Trostinez. There they were shot or gassed, then buried, and later their bodies retrieved and burnt. Thus, this historic site shows no visual sign of these atrocities in the present day. As the site can be considered a final resting place, the design of the memorial fulfils dual functions – that of a public memorial and that of a cemetery with individual tomb stones of elongated pyramid-like shape. The basic concept of this memorial is to create an altar for the “sacred wooded area that bore witness to the brutalities and consecrated the remains. This is achieved by continuously lowering the surrounding roads to such an extent that the visitor has the grass at eye level. Thus the slope created impedes visitors from stepping on what can be considered a mass grave. Each tomb stone displays the personal data of the victim, as well as a horizontal surface for placing personal objects. Since many victims were baptised Christians, the stones also have a hole symbolising a bullet impact, which can be used for placing flowers to represent peace The memorial complex is completed by corner elements, which visually frame the composition, provide a stage for public remembrance, and provide historic information about the site. Additional information plaques with seating are placed at intervals between the grave stones.
