Three-week Open Desk position during the summer of 2011. Tasks and responsibilities included physical modeling, 3D modeling, and schematic design for the various projects being developed. Hakushima Station, one of the projects undertaken, is a new transit station designed to connect the local Astram Line with the regional JR Sanyo Honsen Line. The design featured three design components of a cylindrical concrete shell, a cloud of wire gauze covering, and a large internal pedestrian plaza to promote safety, comfort, and consideration to the local environment by providing natural daylight and ventilation. Gravity-Fastened Structure Inspired by the wood structural system used in Japanese temples, a system of gravity-fastened prefabricated parts would increase the potential of recycling and reuse of building structures. By minimizing the amount of welding, gluing, and drilling a building made from the principle of using gravity to support the structure would be easier to assemble, disassemble, and reuse to lengthen the life of its embodied energy. The system could use these prefabricated parts to help make structures potentially earthquake proof as well as providing a quick means of post-disaster housing.

Cultivate Kansas City, a communitybased urban farming group, needed to update an existing greenhouse to accommodate educational events, store water and reduced energy needs. A group of local designers and architects went to work on finding potential solutions.
The design uses a solar water radient heating system and operatable vents to cool the space.

The West Bottoms of Kansas City rests at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. Historically this area was the economic engine of the city but slowly the area detoriated due to flooding, fires, emigration, and economic changes. The Kansas Design Center project was a year-long collaborative studio effort to generate an urban vision made possible through sposnorship of public officals and stakeholders.

The site of the James Street Development was one of the first residential communities in Kansas City but frequent flooding caused residents to move from this location.
The floods sparked a need for a levee system to protect the industrial functions that use this area. This design intends to reclaim the original residential function of the area by making the riverfront into a public amenity.

PARAroof explored the unique potential of retrofitting the rooftop of the Swisshotel into a functioning urban farm. Researching the land requirements for each animal and cheese production played a crucial role in creating the cradle - to - cradle farm. This project experiments with using Rhinoceros to model structures and EcoTect to quantify daylighting and thermal measurements.

The Role of Syntax seminar incorporated tactile modeling and contemporary music to develop a architectural language. By deconstructing a handheld radio, a language of parts was made to be translated into an architectural structure. Inspired by contemporary composer Steve Reich, the series of subtle arches manipulate the shape to construct an architectural form.

Masquerade is a short film developed in 3ds Max to investigate and explore the connection between cinema and architecture. The film strolls through a small Italian village on a journey to a local coffee shop. The film was produced on a very short time table which taught the importance of framing, moving, and storytelling of a space.

Using the LEED New Construction criteria as a guide, the project combines the beauty and durability of the local prairie vegetation with the rustic materiality of barns. This was the first compressive program which included structural layout, mechanical systems, life safety plans, and landscape planning.

AutoCAD, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator Docked on the Charles River, the Crew Center serves both the MIT collegiagte crew team and the larger crew community of the area. The design maxmizes the exposure and public space for viewing boat races on the river and into the Boston skyline beyond. The roof utilizes a parametric system of openings to bring in the correct amount of light needed for each space and its desired activity. Metal Insulated Panels and layering of partitions helps with insulating the building from the cold winters.

The Beetle Boat Workshop is nestled on a tight urban site in Boston. The structural language of the beetle boat was the inspiration for the design of the building. Constructed within Revit, the design makes full use of the various kinds of light that can be produced by adjusting the spacing of the wood lattice and strategically positioning the building towards the southern exposure.
