Drinking Water Reservoirs – Sika Solutions for Waterproofing Waterproofing
Requirements of Internal Waterproofing
Reservoirs must be watertight against both ingress and leakage of water. External waterproofing against ingress is especially important if the reservoir is exposed to groundwater under hydrostatic pressure. Ingress must be prevented to preserve the quality of the drinking water and the longterm integrity of the reservoir structure. Sika solutions for external waterproofing are available to meet any requirement. As they are not specifically conceived for drinking water reservoirs only, they will not be dealt with in this brochure. Please request Sika documentations for your requirements.
Hygiene: The waterproofing layer must not contaminate the drinking water nor affect its taste and odour; it must not promote growth of fungi or bacteria (i.e. materials must comply with official drinking water requirements). Cleaning: The waterproofing layer must be easy to inspect (light colour), easy to clean and to disinfect.
Sika® ViscoCrete® Concrete
Resistance to drinking water: waterproofing layer cannot be damaged by (treated) drinking water.
2 C
One or two component product. Surface smooth and free of crevices, pinholes, etc. Cementitious waterproofing layer must not contain polymers.
Low PH
Approvals
Waterproofing layer must be resistant to soft water. Waterproofing layer must be able to bridge cracks and accommodate movements in the substrate.
All materials inside the reservoir which are in direct contact with drinking water must meet strict requirements. Approvals from responsible authorities are available from Sika.
Sika®-101 HD
Waterproofing layer must be installed in a reservoir whose internal surfaces are of such poor quality that coatings cannot safely be applied. (The possibility to build new internal floor and wall layers of waterproof concrete exists, but is not discussed here.) Low Mod
Cementitious waterproofing layer must have a low modulus of elasticity (< 15000 N/mm2) to prevent destructive stresses in low-strength substrates (tensile strength 0.8 – 1.5 N/mm2). Improved electrochemical resistance of cementitious renderings.
Inspection, Cleaning and Disinfecting The internal surfaces of reservoirs must be regularly inspected, cleaned and disinfected in accordance with these regulations.
«Soft» Water «Soft» drinking water can chemically attack cementitious and other materials particularly through leaching. This «softness» of the water is a function of its carbonate content, its pH-value and its carbonic acid content. The reservoir surfacing materials must be selected that are resistant to this.

Influence of Electric Fields Corrosion of cement-based materials under influence of an electric field: The hydrolysis of the hardened cement paste can be accelerated if an electric field is applied. Special renderings with very low porosity as Sika-101HD are higher resistant and afford usual lifetime expectations for such cases.
