Fast fashion has a really big impact
toward us not only for us shoppinglovers but also for the planet. Fashion trends are a very big thing on the internet particularly in tiktok and instagram. Fashion moves forward and trends always change overtime. People are likely to choose trendy cheap outfits over old ones to follow what is popular in the media. In particular, young women are mostly targeted towards fast-fashion as they are in social media all the time.
Most importantly, Fast fashion
produces cheap disposable clothing that is produced by retailers in order to keep up with the trend (Cleanup, n.d.). Consumers are often led to buy more clothing as they want to follow the popular trend, affordable and easier to get. It is known as Fast fashion. Fashion trends don’t always last long and keep changing in months or weeks, hence why consumers keep purchasing clothes. Retail brands such as Zara, H and M, and Shein are part of the fast-fashion movement. These brands are leading to huge growth of landfill waste and pollution, and are very hard to avoid as they are very successful and popular. There are other brands and alternatives to buy clothing where it’s more environmentally friendly. Be more crucial as to what products you buy, and do more research. Fast Fashion. (n.d.). HOW IT AFFECTS US
Another thing is that fast
fashion negatively impacts human rights as companies are implementing inadequate labor conditions and low wages, which affects worker’s quality of life. 97% is produced in developing countries with poor labor and human rights protections, where factory abuse and negligence are happening (Omelich, 2019). More chemicals are infused, in which people are having lesser food and income sources. The workers are forced to work in an unsafe, unhygienic environment and would be working many hours for low wages, not having to afford a meal. This also leads them to struggle to live and cover basic expenses. More Information According to The World Counts (2020): Children as young as 6 have been found working in sweatshops for
up to 16 hours per day. A shirt that sells for $60 on western markets can cost less than 10 cents in labor-wages. In 2013, over 1,000 garment employees in Bangladesh lost their lives while at work as a result of the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory. Looking at these facts, this tells us how harmful fast fashion can become. This is why we should stop fast fashion because many people will be affected. Omelich, Y. (2019, October 16). WHAT ARE THE
SOLUTIONS?
Photo by: Stock Snap Source: https://pixabay.com/
Well, after all the negative information regarding Fast fashion, there are many solutions that can help solve this problem. If you have any old clothing or any outdated pair of jeans that you might not use, you can recycle it or even combine them to make trendy clothing. If this is not your style then there are more alternatives. Have you ever heard of thrift stores or charity shops? If you have then it is the perfect time to start buying clothing there, as it is not pricey, affordable and environmentally friendly. If you’re lucky you may find items that are worth more. You can also organize a swap and buy clothing, and rent your clothes. If you are creative, you can make your own clothing using sustainable materials. I usually give away my clothes to my family members and friends if my clothes don’t fit me anymore. People have different preferences.
Fast fashion may appear like a simple method to keep fashionable for us, especially Gen-z’s, but it has a negative impact on sustainability, our environment, animals, and humans. I disagree with fast fashion’s method because they support a culture of excessive consumerism. Let’s make it more sustainable and inform everyone’s decision to create more ethical fashion.
