Ontario's Best Butter Tart Festival drew a massive crowd to downtown MidlandonJune11andprovided a significant boost to the local economy.

"I think it was the best sales day we've ever had," said Roberta Douglas, owner of Royal Tea on King.

Douglas purchased the tea room in September 2020 and toughed her way through the COVID-19 pandemic. Last June, she expanded the business and

opened a boutique.

This year's festival was her first and she was blown away by the crowds that flocked to the downtown and kept her stores busy all day long.

"I've never seen Midland like that before. Ever," said Douglas.

King Street was packed full of people from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and businesses along the street benefited from the hoard of butter tart-loving tourists excited to be back out at a large event.

"It was a wild day. Being our first year, I didn't know what to expect," said Douglas."Ididn'tstress.Ijustenjoyed the ride."

Shewasenergizedbythe massive crowd, and hopes it's a sign of things to come for a small town that relies on tourism.

"Every weekend obviously isn't going to be like the butter tart festival, but

it shows that people are willing to get out, they are shopping and they are looking for experiences," said Douglas.

The Elegant Gourmet, a chocolate shop at 235 King St., was also overrun by

An estimate on the approximate size of that crowdhasyettobecalculated. However, many people believe it was similar to the 60,000 to 65,000 that showed uptothelastfestivalin2019.

In building toward our future, many Indigenous communities across the country, like ours, are beginning with a look backwards. Rama First Nation has worked for years to encourage members to speak Ojibwe,thelanguageofour ancestors, a practice weakened by the years when speaking it was restricted.

Our education division provides language instruction from daycare through to secondary school to inspirelearninginouryoung people. For adults, both in person and online instruction are inspiring more usage in daily life ... in signage, staff correspondence and governance.

Ourlanguageisintegral to our culture, so this renewal is important to our future.

Twenty ways for families to celebrate Canada Day

is about observing of the birth of our country, but it’s also a day for families to have fun together. Ready to get out and enjoy the day? Here are some great ways for families to make the most of our country’s 155th birthday.

1. Birthday breakfast: Kick off the day with yummy pancakes and Canada’s golden treasure, maple syrup! Top your flapjacks with whipped cream and sliced strawberries (and maybe add a side of Canadian bacon).

2. Take a day trip: Pack up the family and visit some nearby places you haven’t seen before or in a while. From Niagara Falls to Wasaga Beach to the Sandbanks, create a road map to travel some of the local sites that make our country great. And be sure to capture it all in pictures and videos!

3. Handprint flag: Start with a piece of white fingerpaint paper. Add red fingerpaint to the sides and a red fingerprint handprint for the maple leaf. Presto! In just a few minutes, you have a cool and creative DIY Canadian flag!

4. Chalk it up! Say Happy Canada Day to the neighbourhood by covering your sidewalk in chalk

Canadian symbols — everything from loonies to lacrosse sticks and maple leaves to Mounties.

5. Canada’s game: Get all the kids on the block together for an old-fashioned game of street hockey. (Don’t forget to start the game with a rousing rendition of “O Canada”!)

6. Make a day of it: From Canada’s Wonderland and Black Creek Pioneer Village, to Harbourfront and Dundas Square, there are dozens of great events planned to celebrate the day — and many are free! Look online for local events in your neighbourhood.

7. Rock painters: Go on a rock hunt, then get some red and white paint and some small paint brushes, and paint the rocks to commemorate Canada Day 2022. They’ll be keepers!

8. Puzzling time: There are many jigsaw puzzles out there that feature Canadiana (a map of our great country is also an excellent learning tool) and puzzling is a perfect way to relax and unwind.

9. Cupcakes please! Make a batch of red velvet cupcakes and ice them in white and red. A great dessert for lunch or dinner.

10. Beaver craft: Wrap a toilet paper roll in

brown construction paper; glue a circle of the paper to one end for the face and another to the end for the tail. Add a couple of black craft pompoms for ears, two googly eyes and two white teeth.

11. Plant a maple: If you have a space in a sunny area, commemorate the day by planting a maple tree. Visit a nursery together and choose the tree, then plant it and watch it grow in the years to come.

12. Weave jewelry: Indigenous-inspired bracelets, necklaces or rings are simple to braid with some colourful embroidery thread and beads.

13. Canada by the book: Learn about our country’s beginnings by checking out the wide selection of informative and entertaining books for every age at the local bookstore or library.

14. Maple cookies: A simple activity to do with kids — add maple flavouring to a sugar cookie recipe, or substitute some of the sugar with a bit of maple syrup. Use a maple leaf-shaped cookie cutter.

15. Water balloon fight! Fill up red and white balloons with water, split everyone up into red and

white teams and start tossing!

16. Create a Canadian cocktail: Cranberry juice, a splash of orange juice and some lemonlime soda. Throw in a few frozen cranberries for garnish (and for the adults, a shot of vodka)!

17. Catch a Canuck film: Act out your favourite movie featuring top Canadian talent in a fun game of charades, and then have a lucky draw from the titles to select one you can all watch together.

18. Have a singalong: Pull out your musical instruments and belt out some great tunes made famous by Canadians — from Bieber and Lightfoot, to Bublé and Barenaked Ladies, to Twain and the Guess Who.

19. Roast s’mores: Graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows — they’re a Canadian classic! Even if you don’t have a campfire or fire pit, you can roast them on a stove or in the microwave or oven.

20. Enjoy a night out: You may be in the heart of the city, but it doesn’t mean you can’t end Canada Day with a camp out under the stars in your own backyard. Happy Canada Day!

July 1: Everyone’s invited to Canada’s birthday party Celebrating 2O22 Canada

After two summers of COVID-19 lockdowns, Canada is pulling out all the stops to celebrate Canada’s 155th birthday — and the party’s on in Ottawa and cities, towns, and villages across the country.

Canada Day is the anniversary of Confederation when the British North America Act was approved on July 1, 1867. But today there’s so much more to applaud.

“Canada Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate what it means to be Canadians — our diversity, shared values, languages and cultures that make our country strong and free,” said Pablo Rodriguez, minister of Canadian heritage, in a statement about festivities. “It is also an opportunity for us to reflect on our past and continue to walk along the pathway to reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.”

National Indigenous Peoples Day, which is held on June 21, started heritage celebrations this summer. The annual event celebrates and recognizes First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cultures. Next up is Canada Day … and here are eight

fun ways to make it a great party.

Wave the flag! No Canada Day celebration is complete without the iconic red and white Canadian flag! Hang one from a window or the front porch, wave it from your baby’s carriage or knapsack, or paint a Canadian flag or a red maple leaf on your face or body!

Visit the Nation’s Capital. LeBreton Flats Park and Place des Festivals Zibi are the hubs for Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa-Gatineau — and everyone’s invited. The daytime ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m. (ET) and the evening show hosted by Isabelle Racicot and Ali Hassan starts at 8 p.m. (ET). Both bring together artists from across Canada. In between the shows, there’s so much going on, including BMX demonstrations, an urban artwork show, a giant games area and an interactive ground painting of a giant mandala. Listen for the beat of the merry troupe Kumpa’Nia at LeBreton Flats Park. Here’s a guide to all the activities.

Celebrating 2O22 Canada

Attend the party virtually: The shows in Ottawa-Gatineau will be on national news networks. Daytime from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (ET), tune into Canadian Heritage’s YouTube channel, CBC News Network, ICI RDI and other national news networks. The evening show will be broadcast on Radio-Canada (in French only) and CBC platforms.

Watch a Canada Day parade with friends and family: Local Canada Day parades will feature marching bands, Canada Day themed floats, antique cars, local businesses, clowns and more. Check the start time with your municipality. While in most cases, parades follow the main street, in Port Dover, there’s a Canada Day Boat Parade and Celebration at the Premier Yacht Club. Stay local: There’s lots going on at the local level. For example, in Grand Bend, Canada Day celebrations take place on the Main Beach with live bands all day. In Port Credit, visitors are invited to “Paint the Town Red” festivities at Memorial Park with a daylong Kids Zone as well as a Singer Spotlight Karaoke in the afternoon. In Bath, there’s a Bean Bag Toss, Giant Jenga and Inflatable Hockey rink in the Kid Zone; also,

check out participating homes in the Canada Day-themed Decorate Your Doorway/Property Contest. In Parry Sound, Canada Day features a delicious Ribfest along with live performances and other fun activities. Here is a list of Canada Day events across the country.

Enjoy Canada Day food: Anyone hosting a backyard barbecue or venturing out to a local event should put traditional Canadian foods on the menu; examples include poutine, butter tarts, Nanaimo bars, maple taffy and beaver tails. Choose a red and white theme for dessert … such as strawberry shortcake with whipped cream, rhubarb-raspberry cheesecake, and cupcakes with red and white frosting.

Do a Canada Day activity: Whether your family is celebrating at home, at a cottage or in a tent at a campground, check out the Canada Day activity kit and do a craft together. Make an Origami Canada Day lantern. Play a game to spot classic Canadian symbols like maples leaves, beavers and the RCMP. Make a 3D paper model of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. Colour your own Canadian flag.

While many business owners are celebrating Midland council's decision to enact temporary free parking throughout the downtown, some are upset a permanent solution has yet to be found.

"While this is a welcome breather, it is only of value if they use the time to fix the problems with the (parking meter) interface," said Glen Canning, co-owner of The Elegant Gourmet.

On June 15, council voted to suspend the paid-parking program that's frustrated downtown residents and business owners ever since new meters came online in August.

Last year, the town invested in 70 payby-plate parking meters to replace the 350 coin-operated meters throughout the downtown. The new machines have resulted in countless complaints.

"It has had the very real effect of discouraging people from visiting the downtown," said Canning. "We have regular customers that now refuse to come downtownsincethissystemhasbeeninstalled."

Sarah Kitchen, owner of One Stop Beauty Shop, has also dealt with many clients frustrated by the challenging task of paying for parking.

"We have heard complaints all the way along, and it has rarely been about the need to pay," said Kitchen. "Mostly, we hear that people are frustrated at lack of clear directions and signage, that the system is not user friendly, and that the machines tend to be glitchy."

Kitchen said she was pleased by council's decision to pause paid parking, havingbeenpartofagroupofdowntownbusiness owners who submitted a petition to get the system paused in October.

Council voted down a motion to pause paid parking on Oct. 13. Six months later, the motion was re-tabled and approved.

"I think it was wise to pause it," she said.

A staff report was tabled June 15 that proposed a variety of changes to the program, including the creation of annual and monthly passes, extending paid parking to seven days a week, and eliminating any form of free parking.

Council didn't even discuss these

changes, with five of the nine councillors voicing their opposition immediately.

Amotionwaspassedtodeferthereport until July13 — to allow for staff to investigate alternatives — and pause the paidparking program in the meantime.

"This was not an act of support; it was simply an act of avoidance," said Canning, noting the items in the report have simply been delayed.

Canning said he would like to see the town give more consideration to the impact the parking system is having on businessesandresidents,ratherthanfocusing on the revenue it can create.

"Theactualeffectonthepeoplethatuse thedowntownhasbeenmostlyignored,as (have)theeffectsonthehealthandviability of the existing downtown businesses," hesaid."Collectively,thedowntownisone of Midland's largest employers, and any system or policy that hurts the downtown community hurts the entire town."

The October municipal election is going to feature an intriguing mayoral race in Midland.

Current mayor Stewart Strathearn and town councillors Bill Gordon and Jonathan Main have all announced their intentions to run for head of council.

While the municipal election is months still five months away, candidates in Midland, Penetanguishene, Tiny and Tay could officially file their paperwork and announce their candidacy as of May 2.

Gordon filed his paperwork with the town clerk the minute town hall opened that morning, en-

He said he had been mulling over the idea of a mayoral bid for the past few months before eventually decidingtogoforitandseek a more influential role on council.

"If I want to keep playing in the governance game hereinMidland,Ineedtodo so with all of the facts I can have," said Gordon. "The bestwaytogetthoseistobe in the room, or at the table, which means being the mayor or deputy mayor."

Tourists visiting the Town of Midland could eventually have to pay a four per cent municipal accommodation tax.

The Province of Ontario hasgivenmunicipalitiesthe ability to levy a hotel tax. This tax would be tacked on to rates charged by local hotels and short-term rental accommodations and paid by anyone who rents a room.

"We have told all of our staff that it is abundantly clear we need to provide re-

and have some momentum to run for mayor," said Main.

"I know how important public policy is and what a difference we can make to the local population by having great municipal services."

Steweart Strathearn has unfinished business to tend too.

"Thejob'snotdone,"said Strathearn."Thereisalotof

unfinished business and I think I've got the ability to bring both council and staff together to get it done."

Midland has a significant infrastructure deficit, with Strathearn estimating there's approximately $150 million worth of infrastructure that needs to be replaced.

"Unless we grow in a responsible, planned way, that (financial) burden

rests on the existing tax base," said Strathearn. "Town hall needs to be more nimble. We have put moreemphasisonplanning and engineering within the town, so they can handle and increased number of applications for development."

On June 15, council authorized staff to investigate the implications of implementing such a tax. This includes preparing a draft bylawandestablishingaworking group to provide input on the bylaw.

"I do want to know what the hoteliers think about it .. and take that input into consideration" said Mayor Stewart Strathearn.

Coun. Cher Cunningham agreed with the mayor.

"Many municipalities in thecountyaredebatingthis question right now and goingouttotheiraccommodation (providers) to see if we can make this something thathasapowerful,positive impact on attracting tourists to the area," said Cunningham.

Barrie, Orillia and Huntsville are among those that have already implemented the tax.

Not everyone on council was on board with the idea.

Coun. Bill Gordon was offended by the notion. "We arecomingoutofapandemic.Wearestillfloppinglikea deadfishtryingtorevivethe economy and businesses, we have runaway inflation, increased interest rates ... there are a lot of headwinds for the municipality."

The motion was narrowly approved with a 5-4 vote.

MIDLAND RESIDENT CHARGED AFTER DOG ATTACK

AMidlandresidentisfacing charges after their dog allegedlyattackedandkilled a neighbour's chihuahua in early May.

The attack occurred in the backyard of a Queen Street residence.

Neighbour Micki Belcourt said two cats and a kitten, belonging to the Midland resident, were killed by thesamedogpriortothedog jumping a fence and killing the neighbour's chihuahua.

"We have been complaining about this dog for a while,"saidBelcourt,adding she began warning neighbours a year-and-a-half ago.

Belcourt is frustrated, as local officials are staying tight-lipped about the inci-

dent. She said she has contacted Huronia Animal ControlandtheTownofMidland bylaw department on numerous occasions, but has yet to be provided any information about what's being done with the dog.

"We are concerned. We don'tknowwhatisgoingon," Belcourt said. "Why can't we find anything out? I have a right to know. This a public safety concern."

Randy Bidan of Huronia Animal Control confirmed a "serious incident" took place and charges have been laid, butwouldn'tgointospecifics as the matter is before the courts.

In Ontario, dog owners can be charged under the Dog Owners' Liability Act. Historically, dog owners in the province have been

charged and convicted of criminal negligence and criminal negligence causing bodilyharminrelationtoattacks. The specific charges laid in this case are unknown, but Bidan said disciplinary action has been takenandneighboursshouldno longer be concerned.

"I can assure you that the action taken has ensured public safety in that neighbourhood," said Bidan. "Dog owners will be held accountable for their dogs' actions."

Const. David Hobson of SouthernGeorgianBayOPP confirmed an incident occurred, noting officers providedsupporttoanimalcontrol officers and town bylaw officers during several followup visits to the home. However, specific details were not provided.

David Smiley, supervisor of municipal law enforcement for the Town of Midland, said the town "has no commentasthematterisbefore the courts."

Pregnant people in north Simcoe no longer need to leave the community to receive most types of prenatal care.

A prenatal clinic was slated to open June 20 at Georgian Bay General Hospital (GHGH) to provide high-quality, standardized care for people across the north Simcoe region.

"Through the establishment of the prenatal clinic, GBGH will be able to provide continuityofcaretopatientsfromthefirst trimester all the way to their delivery," said Dr. Chevy (Jan) Moreau, chief of obstetricsatGBGH."Inadditiontoproviding prenatal care, the clinic also offers an opportunity for patients to meet the obstetrical team, tour the birthing unit, and have ongoing followup appointments with direct access to the hospital's diagnosticimaging and lab services."

The clinic, which operates Monday mornings, is staffed by a team of nurses and obstetrical physicians, including severallocalfamilyphysicianswhoregularly perform deliveries at the hospital.

Theservicewillbelocatedintheambulatory-care department for its first few months of operation before being relocat-

Annually, there are approximately 300 births that occur from GBGH's catchment area of Midland, Penetanguishene, Tiny, Tay, Christian Island, Georgian Bay Township and Springwater. Between April 1, 2021, and March 31, 2022, there were 138 births at GBGH, indicating there is a significant number of women travelling outside the region for birthing services.

GBGH officials estimate 90 per cent of births from the catchment occurring at other hospitals within the region could have been completed at GBGH.

THE FORMER MIDLAND CENTENNIAL WAS SELECTED 129TH OVERALL

"Seeing (Ethan) go through what I am going through now, and him being here supporting me on draft day, has been a really cool experience," said Larmand.

Family and friends gathered at the Larmand residence on April 30 to watchtheOHLdraftonline in anticipation of Isaac being drafted. Throughout the season, a dozen teams showed interested in Larmand, giving him a pretty goodindicationthathe'dbe selected.

"I was hoping for the best and a dream came true," said Larmand.

On draft day he was hanging out with family, eagerly waiting for his name to appear on the screen, when his phone rang. It was Peterborough

"He called and asked if I had seen that they picked me ... but my name hadn't popped up on the screen yet," said Larmand.

Seconds later, his name appeared.

"Mywholefamilywasin the living room and everyonestartedscreaming,and the GM heard them," said Larmand. "That's a day I will remember for the rest of my life."

Larmand played Tyke and Atom hockey with the Midland Centennials and won two Ontario Minor Hockey Association titles. He joined the North Central Predators organiza-

tion in minor peewee and played through to midget.

The six-foot-four, 181pound forward had nine goalsandeightassistsin23 regular season games, and added three goals and nine points in six playoff games.

"I like to use my speed, use my shot and play physical," said Larmand, when asked how he would describe himself as a player.

He plans to put in a ton of work this off-season to put himself in the best possible position to make the Petes roster when training camp opens August 29.

"I am putting as much work in as I can this summer," said Larmand.

Teenagers in Midland have a new space to hang out.

The Midland Public Library has created a space on the second floor called "The Vault" that's exclusively for those aged 12-18. The small room gets its name from the vault in the wall, left over from when the library building was a post office. Since then, the room has served a variety

"Everything in the space was designed for teensbyteens,"saidJennifer Paquette, the library's adult and teen services coordinator. "It's a space for teens to be teens — to be 100 per cent themselves."

Paquette sent out surveys and solicited ideas from a teen advisory

"The (teens) talked about using the space to escape their hectic lives," said Paquette. "(It's) a place for them to come and hang out with friends ... or aquietspaceforthemtobe able to study."

The space has a large TV and Nintendo Switch for gaming, comfortable seating, a study bar, wall display for books, a small fridge full of drinks and a cupboard full of snacks.

A contest was held to decorate the space, with the winner choosing the main colours, the carpet,

the patterns and the artwork in the room.

Librarystaffarehoping the space will help retain more library users through their teenage

years. Most kids get introduced to the library by their parents, who bring them to children's programs. As they age, many of them stop visiting.

"A space like this, that is for them, helps sustain those library users and lifelong literacy and learning lovers through into adults," said Paquette.
