MIDWESTERN NEWSPAPERS STAFF
TORONTO – The provincial government has announced measures to expand eligibility for COVID-19 booster shots and tighten proof of vaccination requirements in response to rising COVID-19 case numbers and the spread of the Omicron variant.
The government is also urging Ontarians to limit social activity over the holiday season.
“As we continue to learn more about the Omicron variant, we are taking additional measures to protect our progress as we head into the winter months,” said Health Minister Christine Elliott at a Dec. 10 press conference.
“Getting vaccinated and adhering to public health and workplace safety measures will continue to protect us and our loved ones against COVID and variants, but we won’t hesitate to continue to take swift action to ensure the continued health and safety of all Ontarians.”
Provincial officials announced it is abandoning the target of lifting of proof of vaccination requirements by Jan. 17. The reopening plan announced in October stipulated “that doing so was contingent on the absence of concerning trends.”
Other measures announced at the press conference include requiring the use of the enhanced

The government will also be strengthening the verification process for medical exemptions and clinical trial exemptions by requiring a certificate with a QR code. Organizations and businesses that are under the provincial proof-of-vaccination system will be advised to no longer accept physician notes as of Jan. 10. In addition, as of Dec. 20, youth aged 12 to 17 years participating in organized sports at recreational facilities will be required to pro-
While not formally changing gathering limits (currently 25 people indoors, 100 outdoors) the provinces is urging voluntary limitation of gatherings and social activity
“On the advice of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Ontarians are strongly advised to limit their social gatherings and the number of gatherings they attend over the holiday season,” states the release.
“Additional precautions should be taken if all individuals are not fully vaccinated or where vaccination status is unknown. Employers in all industries should make every effort to allow employees to work from home.”
The province is also expanding booster dose eligibility to all Ontarians 18 years of age and older as of Jan. 4, with appointments to be booked approximately six
months after receiving a second dose.
Currently individuals over 70 and medically high-risk individuals are eligible for booster shots. The age range was already set to expand to 50 and over as of Dec. 13.
The government states the latest move will expand booster eligibility to approximately 5.5 million people.
As part of its enhanced winter testing strategy the province is launching a holiday testing blitz next week to offer voluntary rapid antigen screening to asymptomatic individuals free of charge.
Two million rapid tests will be provided at pop-up testing sites in high-traffic settings such as malls, retail settings, holiday markets and transit hubs, the release states.

Blyth to hold New Year’s Eve fireworks display

NORTH HURON – Enthusiastic volunteers will host a New Year’s Eve fireworks display at the Blyth and District Community Centre, and North Huron council agreed to waive the fees associated with the event to help.
The Blyth Community Betterment Committee (BCB), with representation from the Blyth Lions, Legion, Ladies Auxiliary, Friends of the Village,
and Blyth Women Sharing and Caring, submitted a letter of request to council at the Dec. 6 meeting.
“With the generous support of Bruce Power, we were able to purchase $1,600 worth of non-commercial grade fireworks to share with our community,” the letter of request said.
The BCB requested that North Huron council waive the facility rental/campground and fireworks permit fees and provide support from public works to plow the lanes in the campground, if necessary.
They also requested volunteers from the fire department to supervise and charge the fireworks and help manage the flow of traffic and parking at the campground.
The BCB will ensure a $5 million insurance policy and that COVID-19 protocols are in place and enforced at
the event. In addition, they will take care of any promotions.
The Blyth New Year’s Eve fireworks display is a “free” community event.
The BCB and their partners have agreed to pay for the costs associated with the event, other than those related to municipal support.
The volunteers involved in the organization of this event have been working very hard to create a fun and safe community event and to raise the spirits of community members “during the challenging time of the pandemic.”

Schreiner questions government’s original timeline to lift COVID-19 restrictions
Continued from front
“Ontario, like other jurisdictions around the world, is seeing concerning trends in public health and health care indicators, and additional measures are required to protect our progress for the long-term,” said Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health.
“All Ontarians are strongly urged to follow these and existing measures and get vaccinated with a first, second or booster dose if you have not done so already. These are the layers that are
protecting everyone.
“By taking these actions, we can help to reduce the mobility of COVID-19 and its variants, protect public health and health system capacity and save lives.
“This is especially important as we enter the holiday season and spend more time with family and friends. We need to keep each other safe.”
Some opposition politicians, including Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner of Guelph, questioned why the government prematurely set seemingly random

dates to end proof of vaccination requirements in the first place.
“I’m relieved the Ford government has backed down from prematurely lifting the vaccine passport mandate they had originally set for [Jan. 17],” Shreiner stated in a press release.
“The science is clear. Vaccines work and vaccine passports are an important tool for public safety.
“Doug Ford should never have set an end date for vaccine passports before the system even had a chance to get started.”
Shreiner also called on the provincial government to:
• ensure small businesses have the resources they need to carry out the added step of scanning QR codes;
• “raise awareness and acknowledge that COVID is airborne”;
• supply high-quality masks and respirators such as N95s to anyone in highrisk areas, including healthcare or education settings; and
• make “significant investments” in ventilation upgrades to improve air quality in all congregate areas.

Listowel Ford holding annual Blanket Drive, seeks community input on donation destinations
DAN MCNEE dmcnee@midwesternnewspapers.com
LISTOWEL – It’s round four for the annual Listowel Ford Blanket Drive, and this time around donated items will be finding homes through area organizations at the suggestion of local residents.
Since its inception in 2018, the Ford Blanket Drive has traditionally contributed blanket donations to the London Sick Kids Hospital NICU through the Children’s Health Foundation. With the COVID-19 pandemic limiting what that organization can accept in terms of decontamination protocols, initiative founder and Listowel Ford Product Specialist Matt Cory said it was decided to open up the Blanket Drive to area organizations that could best benefit from them this time around.
“Anyone who would benefit from having these blankets, reach out to us and we’ll add them to our list,” said Cory. “We’re just going to start dividing them before and after Christmas.”
Launched in mid-November, the 2021 edition of the Ford Blanket Drive will ac-
cept donations of all new blankets until Dec. 20. To date through all four years of the initiative, approximately 850 blanket donations have been received.
“It really blows me away that Listowel is still going strong even during COVID and everything,” said Cory. “From year one, I still have some of the same ladies who donate 100 blankets themselves, they’re excited.”
2021 organizational recipients currently include the Emily Murphy Centre in Stratford and It Takes A Village in Listowel. Anyone looking to donate or seeking more information can reach out to Listowel Ford at 519-291-3520.
“There’s going to be a lot of them. We have 150 already, and the majority of them still aren’t here yet,” said Cory. “It’s going to go bigger and bigger. Now that we’re spreading it out, I think it’s a good idea to spread out the success we’ve had.
“We just wanted to incorporate the community and the people donating, so they get a say for the blankets to go somewhere that means a lot to them.”
Local resident charged with school bus violation
LISTOWEL – The Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged the owner of a vehicle after it drove through the stop arm and flashing lights of a school bus.
On Nov. 24, police were contacted after a vehicle was seen just before 9 a.m. driving through the overhead red flashing lights and extended stop arm on a school bus, while it was stopped loading kids on Tremaine Avenue South in Listowel.
The license plate of the vehicle was obtained, and the owner, a 33-year-old resident of North Perth, was charged with fail to stop for school bus – owner.
If convicted, the driver/owner can be fined not less than $400 and up to $2,000 for a first time offence, and a fine not less than $1,000 and up to $4,000 or imprisonment for subsequent offence(s).
They would also be subjected to six demerit points to their license.

Nurses needed to fix health care’s ills
A couple of decades ago, hospitals hit a funding crunch as federal and provincial governments struggled to balance their budgets.
The result was described euphemistically as “trimming deadwood” from a wasteful system. Who can forget the one that still sets teeth to grinding – “doing more with less.”
Hospital budget cuts came to be described in terms of bed closures. Hospitals did not physically get rid of beds; what they did was fire the people who cared for the patients who would have occupied those beds. Bed closures was a discrete way of saying how many nurses would receive layoff notices.
The cuts went deep. A whole generation of nurses was forced out of Ontario’s hospitals. Many found employment in the United States. Some found health care related positions – not necessarily as nurses – in the private sector. Far too many changed careers completely or left the workforce. Hospitals struggled to stay open through sharing services, forming partnerships and outsourcing. The Local Health Integration Network system brought in another very well-paid level of administration to “help” hospitals make further cuts. Many opinion pieces were published about the situation, asking what would happen when the nurses with enough seniority to keep their jobs hit retirement age. The people who would have been ready to step into leadership positions and mentor rookie nurses were either employed by Texas or Florida hospitals – that were glad to have them and paid them accordingly – or were in other careers.
For a career in nursing, education is only the beginning. It is followed by years of extra training as new technology and information becomes available. Skills require constant practice and fine-tuning. Mentorship by more senior people is essential and ongoing.
The fear a couple of decades ago was that the day would come when there would be a handful of highly experienced nurse-managers ready to retire, and a lot of young nurses without the experience, knowledge or desire to replace them. That day has arrived.
In other words, this is not the year to develop food poisoning or break a limb skiing during the holidays. Your local emergency department may well be closed due to lack of staff. The situation will not improve anytime soon. Provincial announcements of funding to hire hundreds of nurses are meaningless – colleges and universities can ramp up their programs, but it will be years before those students have the skills and confidence to staff a rural emergency department overnight, when there may be only one other nurse in the hospital.
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. The COVID-19 pandemic showed the folly of nickel-and-diming health care. The most fragile link proved to be long-term care, where the virus wreaked havoc and killed thousands.
Other countries saw hospitals impacted, with staff forced to make heart-breaking decisions on which patients to treat and which to let die. A recent spike in COVID cases in Alberta had hospitals in the western provinces on the verge of doing that. There are worries that Ontario and Quebec could be next.
Ontario’s hospitals weathered initial battles in the pandemic war relatively unscathed – relatively being the key word. Patients suffered from having surgeries and treatment postponed. Staff suffered from working too many hours under difficult conditions, including having insults hurled at them by misguided individuals desperate to express anger and fear about COVID. What happens with Omicron is anyone’s guess.
People might forget that the nurse shortage was already causing concerns before COVID. Post-war baby boomers were aging rapidly and entering a stage in their lives when they required extra care. Instead of planning for this very situation, various levels of government continued squeezing hospitals, holding them to budget “increases” that did not keep up with inflation.
The recent acknowledgement that more nurses are needed to “fix” health care’s ills comes lamentably and dangerously late.
This entire community wishes our nurses the best as hospitals seek new ways to support them and bring new nurses up to speed – real heroes, one and all!

Words that can shape one’s life
Friends,
I’ve been thinking a great deal lately about language. Words, actually. I am particularly fond of how words sound. Sometimes I find myself lost in listening to others, who are speaking words from languages I could only ever dream of knowing, wondering what it is they are expressing. Words can lift us up and quickly tear us down, share our stories and histories and teach us important lessons for the future.
In my own life, there are a handful of words that have impacted my sense of self, both in quite positive and equally as negative ways. Words like kind, strong, advocate, writer and mother have helped me view myself in positive and empowering ways and evoked a sense purposeful confidence. On the other hand and at different times in my life, descriptors such as poor and/ or needy, crazy, fat, hormonal, stubborn and persistent have left their indelible marks on my secretly fragile soul. Of the many, many words that I’ve worked to get past as I move along in my mid-life identity, I think it’s been “poor” and “crazy” that have been the hardest to scrub off.
They are also the two I see through the Village that, perhaps unintendedly, further widen the divides among community members. Perhaps even contributing to the greatest barriers people face in hesitating to reach out for support.
In my own life, I grew up without a healthy maternal role model. This wasn’t for my mother not wanting to be involved in the life of her children, but rather because she wasn’t encouraged, supported or permitted to be present, from about the time I was 18 months old.
This was in the early ‘70’s and like many women who stayed home to raise children, my mother was left with little when my father moved along in life, taking us children with him, most notably the financial means to fight for custody or support her kids. As I now understand better, as a mother myself, this devastated the woman who first loved me most, and she soon developed strategies to help with that pain. For decades I ached for her and I wondered why she never came back. I had little girl dreams and saw her as this beautiful woman with long flowing hair. She was rarely ever spoken of to us and when it did somehow slip out, the connotation was that she was “crazy.” For years I tried to understand what crazy meant, but the tone of every adult’s voice told me it wasn’t good. As I grew up, angry and searching for love in those dark and destructive places rocker ballads are written about, I felt afraid, wondering if her “crazy” was my own destiny now, too. Did she struggle with addiction? Would I? Could I reach out for help or would someone know that I was “crazy” too? When I had my own babies, a moth-
erless daughter attempting to do it all “right”, was my post-partum depression the self fulfilling prophesy that I knew would one day reach fruition?
It was only after some soul searching and beautiful talks with my aunts that I better understood my mother’s journey and that her trauma, her broken heart, was more than a person could navigate. She wasn’t “crazy,” she was coping. And I so badly wish to turn back the clock and have the opportunity, for all those decades, to hear about her in a way that respected my childhood innocence and her love for me.
“Poor” is another word etched into my soul and one that, when I hear it used to describe someone whom another feels needs help, sees me “checking my baggage” so that I am sure to offer a reply not molded by my own predisposition.
Up until I was in my late teens, we lived an uppermiddle class life. My father was a self-made man and, although often absent from the dinner table for work, he made sure to provide many wonderful things. Just on the cusp of 20, I was newly married and a mom of one, with another babe soon to arrive. As the gods would have it, that child – our son – was not destined for long on this earth and soon died.
In our journeys of grief, so personal and heavy, our marriage suffered such strain. I packed up some things into a backpack and left for a months-long journey across Canada, running from something that was so deep inside of me. When I returned, our marriage ended and I became a young single mom, in an apartment, attending school and volunteering. My soul had come to a peace about the death of my son and I felt strong. I felt rich in blessings, even though I couldn’t afford gas for our car and we bicycled everywhere. I felt somehow free.
That winter, my child and I stepped outside and there on our porch was a beautiful box of fruit, cookies, a ham, a toy and a few other items. I remember now, as I write, feeling so cared for, in that someone cared for us the way we cared for others too. I dropped my child off at the university daycare and cycled to my adult literacy volunteer position and gushed to a peer about this amazing box!

Opposite, yet similar
Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve focused on two significant groups of people in the Christmas history: The shepherds and the wise men. The shepherds were poor and the wise men were privileged.
The shepherds were in a position often pitied and the wise men were in a position of power. These two sets of people were completely opposite, and yet in Scripture we understand that God used both for His glory. Jesus is not off limits to certain people; Christ came to earth for sinners, which is all of us. This is another important aspect of Advent.
Jesus came for both the Jew and the Gentile. The wise men represent the Jew, and the shepherds represent the Gentile. If you’re reading this, Jesus came to earth for you. A personal relationship with Christ is not limited only to those who come from a certain place, or to those who have a specific last name, or to those who attend church on Sundays, or to those who give generously of their money, or to those who are kind to others. A personal relationship with Christ is available to anyone who believes. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are, it doesn’t matter what your background is. Nothing is wasted with God,
and He can use anyone for His glory (just check out the Bible if you’re looking for examples). As we learned with the shepherds and the wise men, Jesus came for the humble and poor first, and then for the noble and rich. James 4:6 tells us that “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” Humility is important to our Lord, just look at the circumstances in which the King of Kings came to this earth at Christmas! He was not born in a royal palace, there were no journalists waiting outside the royal hospital to cover His arrival. No, Jesus was born in a quiet, dark manger, and His first visitors were the shepherds (at the time, shepherding was a lowly vocation). Christ was not first revealed to the wise men, but to the shepherds. While they were two totally different classes and seemingly complete opposites, the shepherds and the wise men actually did have some similarities. They weren’t satisfied to merely hear about Christ
– they sought out to know Him. They did not put off coming to meet Christ –they did it immediately rather than waiting until a more convenient time. Maybe you’ve heard all about Christ, perhaps in church each Sunday, but you’ve yet to make the decision to know Him personally. What are you waiting for? Now is the time! “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” (John 17:3). God sent Christ to earth so that each one of us would have the opportunity to know Him! God loves us, and Christmas is our reminder that Christ came to earth to save sinners, which is each one of us.

Village: Language that shapes us
Continued from page 4
Her nonchalance rivelled my excitement and she casually offered “Yeah, that’s a food hamper.” I was intrigued, having never heard of this before. “What’s a ‘food hamper”?” I asked.
“A ‘FOOD HAMPER’,” she repeated, slower and louder, as though my grasp of the English language was now failing me too. “They give them out at Christmas time, to people who are poor.” My knees felt week and I wanted to throw up. We weren’t poor. Or were we?
In those few words, that beautiful act of caring, that left me feeling empowered and cared for was reframed as an exercise of charity for those who are “poor”.
As we head into this season of giving, in the unsurety of a looming pandemic, troubling rent and food costs and the traditionally higher rates of suicide, domestic violence and drug overdoses than other times of the year, language is even more important.
Our people need to feel that we support them because we are all in this

McCabe, Van Galen enter Perth-Wellington PC nomination contest
MIDWESTERN NEWSPAPERS STAFF
PERTH-WELLINGTON – The race to replace Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece in the next provincial election is under way both within and outside his Progressive Conservative Party.
Two municipal councillors, Wellington North’s Steve McCabe and St. Marys’ Don Van Galen, have joined Harriston native Matthew Rae among those seeking the PC nomination following Pettapiece’s Nov. 17 announcement he will not seek reelection to a fourth term.
Van Galen, who announced his candidacy Dec. 1, served as a municipal councillor for 18 years, and for 17 years has been a financial advisor, earning his designation as a certified financial planner.
“Listening to the goals and concerns of your clients is vital to my business as a financial advisor, and I want to bring that skill and experience as a representative of this riding,” said Van Galen. Previous to his life in financial services, Van Galen graduated from Fanshawe College’s photography program and operated
his own photography store in St. Marys.
In addition to his political and business experience, Van Galen has served on various local committees and boards. He currently serves at the St. Marys representative on the Stratford and District Chamber of Commerce and is chair of the St. Marys Planning Advisory Committee.
Van Galen is also known locally for his many appearances as an actor, producer and director in local theatre.
“I have been blessed with a diverse and interesting career, both politically and in business, and in many ways, it has prepared me for this opportunity,” said Van Galen.
He resides in St. Marys with his
wife of 34 years, Diane, and they have four grown children and twin grandsons.
McCabe, a two-term Wellington North councillor, announced his candidacy in a Dec. 5 press release.
“I know how to work with people for people to get things done for our riding,” he stated.
“Being a provincial member of parliament is all about listening to issues and concerns of those that you represent and giving voice to them in the Legislature. It also requires weighing in on the tough decisions and standing up for the decisions you make.”
McCabe states working with the Grain Farmers of Ontario, the Mount Forest LHIN Recruitment Committee, on the executive of the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority and as a councillor for the last eight years “has given me the experience to collaborate with municipal, provincial and federal levels of government.”
McCabe stated that the PerthWellington riding is unique –“probably the largest centre for dairy farming, and agriculture is one of our biggest industries” –
as well as diverse.
“One of the other things that has been hurt [by the COVID-19 pandemic] in our riding is tourism,” he said. “Stratford relies on it a lot, and it has been hit very hard in the last two years … we want to see that return to its former glory.”
Rae, a former executive assistant to Pettapiece, announced his plan to seek the nomination on Nov. 19.
At a Nov. 28 nomination meeting, the Perth-Wellington NDP affirmed Jo-Dee Burbach as their candidate for Ontario’s 43rd general election, slated for June 2. Elected to Stratford City Council in 2018, Burbach is a member of the city’s social services and the community services subcommittees, as well as the energy and environment and active transportation advisory committees. She is also a board trustee for Gallery Stratford and part of the steering committee for the Community Equity Action Team, a Stratford Police Services advisory group. She also volunteers as a board member for Here For Now Theatre.
Laurie Hazzard named NDP candidate in Huron—Bruce
MIDWESTERN NEWSPAPERS STAFF
HURON-BRUCE – New Democrats in Huron—Bruce have selected former nurse, educator and school administrator Laurie Hazzard to be their candidate in the 2022 provincial election.
In a press release, the NDP says Hazzard’s “experience in both the health care and education fields provide her with a unique insight into the needs of Ontario families,
particularly in rural Ontario.”
The Bayfield resident created the first online public secondary school in Ontario, helped develop an eLearning strategy for the province, and spent 14 years developing digital learning tools for Ontario public schools.
She is also an avid volunteer in the Bayfield community, working with Home4Good Shopping Buddies program, the Blue Bayfield environmental group, the Bay-
field Ukulele Society, and other great local organizations. Hazzard says she is thrilled to be representing the riding in the upcoming provincial election.
“I am thrilled to be running to represent my community and fight for a better Ontario. Life is getting harder for families here in Huron and Bruce counties, housing costs are rising, so are the costs of everyday items like groceries and gas,” said Hazzard. “We need
to make sure families are able to build their best lives here. I know with Andrea Horwath and the Ontario NDP team, we can make life better by investing in the things that make life easier for families in Huron—Bruce.”

Vintage snowmobile show set for Jan. 30
BONNIE WHITEHEAD SPECIAL TO THE PLUS
HOWICK – The Huron County Cruisers are hosting a Vintage Snowmobile Show at the Howick Community Centre from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30.
They invite you to register starting at 9:30 a.m. and stay for the day to check out the vendors, swap a few items, join the ride if snow conditions allow, and enjoy the chicken
wings offered up for sale by the Howick Optimist Club.
Two hours of ice time will be set aside for free skating with free hot dogs and chocolate milk being handed out to the kids in attendance.
When you check out the history of snowmobiles, you will find they were created to fulfill a great need for a safe and effective way of rescuing people in snow covered regions, for transporting
goods and services to remote areas, and for fun. Over the years, the social aspect of snowmobiling has developed with local clubs and members travelling hours on developed trails stopping for sightseeing, dining, and camaraderie. Some snowmobiles were designed to be sleek and powerful machines used for racing. Whatever the reason, colour, or design, you will be sure to find some interesting snowmobiles and owners at the show. Hath the Wind a Father?
In the darkest hour of World War I, someone said to King George of England, “How will it ever end?” King George replied, “God will have to work a miracle.” He did.
Lord God of hosts, whose Almighty hand Dominion holds on sea and land, In peace and war Thy will we see Shaping the larger liberty. Nations may rise and nations fall, Thy changeless purpose rules them all. That is the answer – because God is the God that works wonders among the nations.
Germany had the war won. It was at four o’clock on the afternoon of April 22, 1915, that the Germans at Ypres turned loose for the first time their deadly poisonous gas on the Allies. It was completely unexpected, and the Allied soldiers, unprotected, fell in windrows. They were piled up like bloated cordwood. All that Germany now needed to do was to march through, take the English Channel, and the world was hers. Then why didn’t she do it? And why was this particular time selected to turn loose the gas?
It was not the military but the meteorological department which announced to the German generals that the direction of the winds was fixed and settled for thirtysix hours to come, and that they would carry the gas out over the Allied lines.
So the gas was turned loose – when, all of a sudden, it whiled and flung itself back over the German army. And the
Germans gasping, strangling, staggered by the thousands to their deaths. Mr. Schmaus, in his official report, said, “In forty years of meteorological records of the German government, the wind never acted so peculiarly before.” The doubly strange and striking thing was that the wind whirled in only that small area.
The Bible, which can well be called the Encyclopedia Universalis, raises by implication a most interesting question: “Hath the wind a father?” Who sends the wind? What does God’s Book say?
“He made a great wind to pass over.” Jehovah blew with a great wind.” “Awake, north wind, awake and blow.” In the story of Jonah, we read, “And Jehovah prepared a vehement east wind.” Where is the factory where the winds are made?
“He bringeth the wind out of His treasury.” A hundred and sixteen times, the Bible tells of God’s doing and dealings with the wind.
Generally, God allows His natural laws to take their usual course. But the Creator has every right to intervene. When He does, the winds obey Him. Do you?

The world’s largest yule log
By Johannie Dufour and Sarah Beauregard Translated by Katya Teague
What a whirlwind it was at the Snow Island cake factory that day! Since the crack of dawn, the region’s best pastry chefs had been hard at work trying to break the world record for the largest yule log. Their goal: to make a vanilla cake with chocolate frosting almost the size of a house. It seemed like an outrageously ambitious challenge, but the Snow Island bakers and their many assistants were confident that their talent and determination would help them succeed.
Sitting on bleachers set up for the occasion, several people watched the scene unfold with great interest.
“Look, Capella,” Orion said to his twin sister. “The container for mixing the frosting is as big as the public pool!”
“Yum! Chocolate is so tasty,” the gluttonous girl replied. “I would love to just swim in it!”
Walking around the factory floor was the top journalist from the Snow Island Gazette, who didn’t want to miss a minute of the momentous occasion. With his camera in hand and a gleam in his eye, Gregory Slifer intended to capture the action from every angle.
To get the perfect shot of the vat of chocolate frosting, he climbed into a basket on the end of a nearby forklift. An experienced worker used the machine to carefully raise him above the massive tank.
“What an incredible view,” Gregory said, leaning a little too far forward.
At that very moment, the strap around his neck meant to hold the camera snapped. Wide eyed, Gregory watched as his prized equipment plummeted to the chocolatey surface below and sunk into the frosting.
This Christmas, Snow Island celebrates its 250th birthday! Fun and festivities are organized, but not everything goes according to plan…
Orion and Capella rushed to the reporter’s side.
“Mr. Slifer, is your camera waterproof?” Orion asked.
“It is indeed! Waterproof and extremely durable,” Gregory replied. “I often use it outdoors when I cover blizzards and ice storms. I’ve always been able to count on it.”
“Well, we can fish it out for you, no problem,” Capella declared.
“And clean it off, too,” her brother added.
After getting permission from the factory’s health and safety director, Capella embarked on the tricky mission. After putting on her scuba gear (which her parents had quickly brought from home), the young girl was strapped to the end of the forklift with a sturdy harness. Unable to contain her excitement, Capella was then lowered into the vat of creamy chocolate.
A few minutes later, the eight-year-old girl emerged. Covered in frosting, she held up the camera for all to see. “Got it,” she cried out.
The grateful reporter rushed to her side to thank Capella and retrieve his equipment. Wiping the lens, he was relieved to discover that the camera still worked.
After carefully purifying the vat of frosting, the Snow Island culinary crew completed their challenge. The panel of judges were duly impressed. Once a picture was taken for the Book of World Records , the giant dessert was sliced up and shared among all the residents of the region — much to the delight of Capella and her brother.

Merry Christmas
I am privileged to share my brief Christmas Greeting at this time of year. After all, I’m just the middleman of a three-generation business (on my way to retirement) and I’ve been doing this since before “blog” was a word. Although I appreciate the brief platform, I am always careful of what I say. It is not in my nature, nor is it good marketing, to alienate people with my comments. These days the easily offended on both extremes of the spectrum, from Woke to Anti-vaccs. will be quick to crucify you on social media if they can find any way to misinterpret what you say.
So, this year my Christmas greeting is a prayer for peace. Not just military peace (although that would be great) but the peace in our own hearts that makes us slower to judge and to anger. Not coincidentally, that was a big part of the message from Christ 2000 years ago (they named Christmas after him). It would be an honour to his memory, whether you are Christian or not, to practice this simple call to action; be kind to each other.
Merry Christmas from all of us at Conway Furniture
