Kshitij Churi

Hello! I am a fourth year, seventh semester student studying in Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi College of Architecture & Environmental Studies.
Creating experiences is something that I have always been passionate about. Be it through photography, film-making or architecture. Architecture has thus always been a medium for me to explore the ideas of how these experiences can be choreographed to set up a play.

Studio brief- The students were provided with a series of VERB and NOUN associations. The verb is the action element of the pair whereas the noun is the character element of the pair. The Dwelling will be designed using the formal studies undertaken using the action verb but at the same time, understanding the nuances, contexts and relationships that emerge from the noun/site.

Program- A domestication space for a coastguard that guard’s the beach and for small boat fishermen that sail from nearby villages for some fishing. The coastguard is a permanent character of the building whereas the fishermen are temporary habitants who domesticate the space overnight or for couple of nights. The building also acts like a landmark for the fishermen which aids them in navigation.

The design, while conserving what remains of the plants, animals , insects etc that make up for the natural world, also catered to the need to provide for people’s primary needs such as shelter, food and economic activity and intended to encourage the development of environments which people experience as satisfactory places to live, work or play.
The studio’s aim was to develop a masterplan for an ecological site in Karanja using McHargian’s Design with nature - La analysis method - developing a visual layered mapping technique to combine and analyse the site. The masterplan was to be developed for a self sufficient living commune for 25 non-residents. Identifying and designing different quadrants according to the calculated biocapacity and ecological footprint of the sites studied. Providing each quadrant with a suitable program that benefits the location and works in the masterplan as a whole.

Iteration 1
Multiple iterations were done to figure out an ecological solution for the site. The analysis, site visits and iterations led to a combined program that catered to ecological interventions like mangrove restoration & nature park, pisciculture, housing, aquaponics, urban edge, and a market.

Mangrove Restoration & Nature Park Cycle MangroveVegetationDensestandsCircularPavillionWorkshopparkWatchtowerBirdwatchingtowerFloatingDeckPedestrianTrack

Mangrove restoration is an attempt at the base of the site, to renew the depleted coast of Karanja which once were thriving with mangroves. Similarly, a nature park was planned to stop soil erosion, promote flora and fauna, and add to the experience of being in the nature.

It’s also situated next to a slum settlement which makes it a perfect site for a public toilet. The site also has a cricket pitch indicating the site is frequently used by kids in the city to play cricket matches. The program tries to cater both these features in the site.

program caters to two functions in the healthcare institute. The first program on the skywalk creates a gradual sense of transition from an urban environment to a more vegetated, open- free environment into the healthcare institution. The second caters to the users of the emergency care unit on the ground floor. Given the dynamic and heavily trafficked conditions on the site, rapid movements were a major issue for the patients, their family members and the healthcare workers working there. The landscape program thus aims to create a sense of pause that gradually moves from an environment full of chaos to an environment more peaceful for the users to use.

In spite of them being central to one of the most important social and political movements in the country, they have largely been forgotten, and have even been destroyed. Reciprocally, political organisations have tried to incorporate Ambedkar into their own agendas.
Buddhist Temple
Built in 1938, this temple is now situated within a tenement in a lane eponymous to it, i.e., Buddha Mandir Lane on Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Road, Dadar East, Mumbai. It is organized by the Anand Bahujan Vihar Trust and includes a shrine to Lord Buddha and Ambedkar and is a site for marriage and prayer rituals. It is a sacred Ambedkarite space, graced by the touch of Babasaheb Ambedkars feet, who made weekly visits with Maisaheb Ambedkar from their residence at Rajgruha, Matunga. It does not receive many visitors as part of the pilgrimage, but Dr. Ambedkar is remembered through special prayer meetings, revisiting of memorabilia and displaying of old pictures.

BDD Chawls,
The Buddha Vihar in the middle of the BDD Chawls lies next to the Ambedkar Bhavan and is a centerpoint for most communal activities related to Ambedkar. It is run by people of Mahasabha Shakha, the organising body of all Ambedkar related activities in the neighbourhood. The Buddha Vihar is completely community driven, since the residents of the Chawls support it in all possible ways through donations and acts of service. It also lends itself to as many community needs as it can, by being a host to blood donation camps, medical check up drives and was recently even a Covid Vaccination Center.

Studio brief- The Sixth Semester Architectural Design Project intends on enabling a conversation with the Past through architecture. The project is interested in the gestural relationship the new intervention wants to make with history. Which history does it choose to write? Whose? And in what way? The programme evolves through a critical examination of the three mandates of the Archive, the Library and the Museum around the historical figure of Dr Ambedkar.
Narrative- The concept of the project is that of a mirror. The institution is a reflection of the society and tries to deconstruct the societal structure and norms and create a heterotopia in this reflected version. The institution focuses primarily on education and media as a tool for the Dalit community to self-liberation. The programmatic intervention is of a library which promotes interactive spaces and freedom of accessing educational material and rethinking the act of learning from merely a book, by expanding it to and combining it with forms of arts. The institute also expands the relation of library with the outside creating a more interactive space for learning.

Exploring Play
Studio briefA play of levels

The process of the cube exercise involved exploring the play of different levels in a space and how those levels connected with each other. I started with exploring and creating spaces at different heights which were linked with each other. Further, I connected those spaces with different ramps of different widths and lengths. After this, I started to explore how to create spaces below the ground level and exploring their connections with the above spaces. The whole space had a connectivity and a play of levels from a height above the ground, to a space below the ground. It also showed how light and shadow can act at different levels and how it transformed the outlook of the space.

TheNarrativebinaries - wet & dry, were interpreted using the element of water. Using water, as an element to cre ate experience of wetness and dryness, two interven tions were suggested.

Wetness of “water” was interpreted from it’s softness and curves, colours with higher contrast in the envi ronments that it exists in, and the amount of green cover that increases as the water in that environment
Studio brief- The students are asked to consider a 25m x 25m patch of land with a seemingly flat topography overlooking a landscape scene of the student’s choice. The students are urged to create two design responses in the site to evoke any one pair of the following binary experience scenarios.

Drynessincreases.of “water” was interpreted from forms cre ated by water in environments where it is scarce. Dry cracks, rigid forms and less greencover collectively gives an experience of dryness.
