Dominion Senior Living of Johnson City There is nothing more rewarding than giving back to the community during the holiday season. Dominion Senior Living has had the pleasure to work with Samaritan’s Purse, Operation Christmas Child, an organization that collects shoeboxes for underprivileged children in over 100 different countries around the world. The shoeboxes are an opportunity to communicate God’s love and to share the Gospel with children in some of the world’s poorest, hardest-to-reach communities. With the help of many residents and employee donations, we were able to be a part of changing children’s lives in Jesus’ name through the power of a simple gift. To honor this project, residents gathered to individually wrap each shoebox full of toys, hygiene items, and school supplies. The warmth and joy that filled the air was indescribable as they packed and wrapped a total of 10 boxes. Each box at Dominion Senior Living was assembled with love and sent off with prayer, in hopes that the box would bring happiness to children all over the world!

Your skin changes with age. It becomes thinner, loses fat, and no longer looks as plump and smooth as it once did. Your veins and bones can be seen more easily. Scratches, cuts and bruises take longer to heal. Years of being out in the sun for a long time can lead to wrinkles, age spots, and even cancer. Winter brings dry skin and itching from all the dry heat and changes in temperatures. Many older people suffer from dry skin, often on their lower legs, elbows and lower arms. Dry skin feels rough and scaly. There are many reasons for dry skin, such as: • Not drinking enough liquids • Staying out in the weather • Being in very dry air • Smoking • Having stress • Losing sweat and oil glands ( common with age) • Health problems, such as diabetes or kidney disease. • Using too much soap, antiperspirant, or perfume and taking hot baths will make dry skin worse. Because older people have thinner skin, scratching itches can lead to bleeding that can lead to an infection. Some medicines make the skin itchier. Itching can cause sleep problems. If your skin is very dry and itchy, see your doctor. These things below help with dry, itchy skin: • Moisturizers like lotions, creams, or ointments can soothe dry, itchy skin. They should be used every day. Apply after baths and as needed. • Try fewer baths and using milder soap to help your dry skin. However wash off if you do not bath, cleaning in the folds of your skin, dry your skin folds with a towel, apply moisturizers and change your clothes every day to keep fresh. • Warm water is better than hot water for your skin. • Some people find that a humidifier (an appliance that adds moisture to a room) helps. • Drinking 8-10 glasses of fluids each day will keep you hydrated internally. • Keep your hands and legs covered when outside. Winter comes in and settles over us and we notice our skin is itchier and dryer and using these tips can help relieve your skin problems. Remember to bath with warm water not hot, apply moisturizers every day, a humidifier maybe helpful, keeping hydrated and keep your extremities covered can help. If these things do not help with itchy dry skin consult your doctor.
