Memorial Park Community Center is now open on Saturdays from 9:00am – 4:00pm. Everyone will enter at the Aquatics/Recreation entrance.

Foundation News

The Johnson City Senior Center Foundation would like to thank all the participants in their 2021 “Paddles Up” Pickleball Tournament. It was a very successful tournament with 70 players participating. A big thank you goes out to the Pickleball Committee and the Foundation Board members who helped with this event. Thank you to all who have made donations to the Foundation’s Fall appeal. Your donations help in multiple ways to the seniors in our community. The next big project is their Spring Forward for Seniors which provides food and household goods to low income seniors.

All members who have Silver Sneakers®, Renew Active™ or Silver & Fit® through your insurance. Have you updated your paperwork yet? We need new forms for folks that are eligible for these programs. Please see front desk if you have not taken care of this during January 2020. We are now offering all three programs. So our records are accurate, everyone will be required to renew your certification through our center for these programs. Please see front desk for more information. There are brochures explaining the eligible classes for each of these programs at the front desk.

Alert: Many of our members have fragrance sensitivity. Perfumes, aftershaves and other scented beauty products may cause allergic reactions. To be considerate of our members and staff please refrain from using scented products. Thank You!

Congregate Meal Change in Congregate Meal Drive-Thru Service: The Johnson City Senior Center is open. There is plenty of activities happening within the center. Congregate meals are being served as a drive thru service only. Most participants in the program expressed the preference of driving through verses dining in the dining room. No meals will be allowed to be brought into the center. Your meal will be served hot. Reordering process and pick up procedures will remain the same. Your meal order for the following week will be taken on Tuesday and Wednesday. If you ordered a meal, the pick-up times are from 11:30a-12:00p each day Monday through Friday. Please contact us if you are unable to pick up your reserved meal (423-434-6226 or 423-434-5723)

Video Series – How to Look at and Understand Great Art (Ages 18+) Instructor: Ann Whitson Cost: Free First Wednesday of Each Month 12:30-2p In these lectures we will be introduced to the components of art – color, line, perspective, and composition as well as point of view, motion, light and texture. We will learn how the artist uses symbolism and communicates a message to the viewer. Many different media will be included and many great works of art featured. The course covers great art from the 13th century to the present. Pencil Drawing Made Easy (Ages 18+) Instructor- Ann Whitson Cost: Free Tuesdays 1-2:30p Tuesday afternoon drawing offers an encouraging, relaxed atmosphere in which to create and learn. Bring your materials and projects and take advantage of any instruction needed in technique or skill. Materials will be available for anyone who needs them. Bring Out the Artist in You (Ages 18+) Instructor: Charline Hughes Cost: $5 per class Tuesdays 1–3p Are you looking for a place to hone your painting skills. Look no further. ‘Charlie’ will be available to offer guidance and assistance and share her knowledge in Oil, Acrylic and Watercolor technique. Bring your project and materials in for expert advice in an encouraging and relaxed atmosphere. Suitable for any skill level. Feel free to come by and visit during class to see what it is all about and if you would like to sign up. We encourage all former Art students to join us. Arts & Crafts Instructor: Charline Hughes Cost: $8 Second Tuesday December 14 3-5p No talent required! Join instructor Charline Hughes as she walks you through creating a canvas you will be proud to display in your home. Learn fundamental skills including how to add shadows, depth and dimension. This is a make and take class. All supplies will be furnished. Sewing Group - A Community Service Project (Ages 18+) Instructor: Charline Hughes Cost: Free Wednesdays 1-3:30p We have a surplus of fabric which has been donated to the center. In an effort to give back to the community, we want to be a blessing to those in need by sewing oversized lap quilts and/or pet beds. Sewing machines will be set up and all supplies will be made available. Items made will be donated to the community. Paper Quilling (Ages 18+) Instructor: Pam Lacy Cost: $4 Wednesday December 8 1:30-3p Quilling is an ancient Art form which is still very popular today. It is a fun and relaxing way to create! Pam will guide you in the use of the tools and colored strips, teaching the basics of the craft. December’s class will be the creation of a small wreath which can be used in your Christmas décor or as part of a greeting card. Suitable for any skill level. There is an example of the project on the bulletin board outside the Craft room.

December 2021 Cost: $8 Thursday December 9 12:30-3:30p If you would like to make something unique and beautiful this is the perfect opportunity. You will decorate the glass with alcohol ink and then insert a string of “Fairy Lights” inside for a truly beautiful effect. All materials furnished. An apron is recommended. Painting Ornaments (Ages 18+) Instructor: Ann Whitson Cost: $4 for the series Monday, Friday, Wednesday December 6, 10, 15 12:30-2p As we approach the holiday season let’s have some relaxing fun with painting. In this class we will be painting pre-made ceramic ornaments. All supplies will be furnished! An apron is recommended. Mitten Tree Project Each December we host girls from Girls Inc. for a Christmas gathering where they receive a gift of hats, scarves and mittens. We are collecting these items from our members for this event and would like to invite you to knit or crochet for this worthwhile project. There is yarn and other supplies here at the center if you need them. Contact Chyrl or Ann for supplies or information. Any donations for this project are greatly appreciated! Heart Strings (Ages 50+) Cost: Free Tuesdays 10a–12p Bring your instrument and join in this open group, playing a variety of songs including old hymns, bluegrass, country and folk music.

Mosaic Class (Ages 18+) Instructor: Melissa Wiley Cost: $45 Wednesday December 8 9a-12p Come and explore the creativity of Mosaics. We will be making a 5x5 plaque entitled “Free Style Kaleidoscope” using stained glass, beads and mirror. Cost includes all materials, instruction and use of tools. Please dress appropriately (covered shoes and long pants). Pieces will be grouted for you and available for pickup within a week.

Mountain Dulcimer Lessons, Beginner/Intermediate Level (Ages 18+) Instructor: Willis Jones Cost: $20 for four lessons Wednesday December 8, 15, 22, 29 2-3p Learn to play the old time Mountain Dulcimer with Willis Jones! Please bring an instrument that is ready to play. This one hour session is for those who are interested in learning, have questions about the dulcimer or are very rusty in their playing technique. There will also be practice time from 3-4p at no additional charge.

Collaging With Handmade Paper (Ages 18+) Instructor: Ann Whitson Cost: $6 Monday December 13 1-3:30p Creating with handmade paper is as much fun as making the paper! We will use bits and pieces of previously made paper and some other objects to put together a composition on canvas, which can be displayed or given as a gift. An example will be provided or you can use your imagination!

Learn to Play the Ukulele (Ages 18+) Instructor: Roxanne McDaniel One class in December Cost: $12, includes materials fee Thursday December 9 3-4pm Have you thought about learning to play the Ukulele? Here is your opportunity! Roxanne will cover the basics and pre-tuned instruments will be available. Come and join in for something new and different!

Christmas Surprise Craft (Ages 18+) Instructor: Sherry Bernheisel Cost: $8 Friday December 10 12:30-3:30p Join Sherry in creating something unique and special for the holiday season. It looks like a beautifully decorated holiday box but when opened it falls into a flat surface to display your handmade ornament inside! All materials furnished.

Senior Chorale Cost: Free Thursdays 10a – 12p (through 12/16) Join this lively group who loves to sing a variety of songs including show tunes and popular songs. This group is led by Cherry Smith. The group is open to anyone who is looking for a low stress, less demanding group with which to perform. No audition required.

Join us to share your experience, receive useful information, learn caregiving/child rearing tips, and gain emotional support during our Coffee & Conversation for GRANDfamilies. Coffee & Light Refreshments will be provided.

You are invited to a special Christmas celebration on Thursday, December 9. The Johnson City Senior Chorale will host a special Christmas concert at 1:00 pm, featuring hand bells and beautiful choral music. JCSC Seniors on the Go will not meet at 3:00 pm so that you can enjoy the sounds of the Christmas season at this special concert.

This will be a session to meet staff, find out what programs we offer, take a tour and ask questions about the center and its programs. Please register with the front desk or call 434-6237 to reserve your spot. “My Favorite Christmas” Christmas Concert (All Ages Welcome) Thursday December 9 1p Cost: Free The Johnson City Senior Chorale will present “My Favorite Christmas” in song and story. Come and relive your favorite Christmas and songs you loved as a child and still love to sing! This concert will be under the direction of Cherry Smith with Gail Morris accompanying on the piano. Special guests will be the JPC Ringers, an area hand bell choir, and Martha E Painter, a local harpist. Get in the spirit of Christmas as we sing and play our favorite songs! Hope to see you there! As a bonus, the performers will be adorning outfits of yesterday and the audience is invited to join along.
