Foundation News
The Johnson City Senior Center Foundation wishes you and your family a wonderful New Year. Their next project is Spring Forward for Seniors which helps our low income seniors by providing food and household supplies to about 200 households. You can help by making a donation, volunteering to help pack bags or help to deliver those bags. You will see the flyer with more information in this newsletter. The Foundation thanks you for your support.
All members who have Silver Sneakers®, Renew Active™ or Silver & Fit® through your insurance. Have you updated your paperwork yet? We need new forms for folks that are eligible for these programs. Please see front desk if you have not taken care of this during January 2020. We are now offering all three programs. So our records are accurate, everyone will be required to renew your certification through our center for these programs. Please see front desk for more information. There are brochures explaining the eligible classes for each of these programs at the front desk.
Alert: Many of our members have fragrance sensitivity. Perfumes, aftershaves and other scented beauty products may cause allergic reactions. To be considerate of our members and staff please refrain from using scented products. Thank You!
Congregate Meal Congregate meal is served in the dining room. Reservations must be made. Reservation sheets for meals are placed outside the dining room doors. Locate your name and place a checkmark in the reserved column for the days that you wish to come to eat. All orders must be placed 48 hours in advance. “No add-ons” will be permitted after the meal order has been sent in to FTHRA. No outside food “to share” will be permitted at this time. If you ordered a meal, the service time will be 12:00p. Please contact us if you are unable to dine on a day that you have reserved (423-434-5723). Meals will be served for those who have made reservations between 12:00 and 12:20. At 12:20, meals will be given out to those who have shown up to eat but forgot to reserve.

We will learn how the artist uses symbolism and communicates a message to the viewer. Many different media will be included and many great works of art featured. Video Series - Masterworks of American Art (Ages 18+) Cost: Free Last Wednesday of Each Month 12:30-2p In this video series we will explore the remarkable history of American Art from its origins in the colonial past until shortly before the First World War. Like the early Americans it is forward-looking, innovative and sometimes rebellious.

Sewing Group - A Community Service Project (Ages 18+) Instructor: Charline Hughes Cost: Free Wednesdays 1-3:30p We have a surplus of fabric which has been donated to the center. In an effort to give back to the community, we want to be a blessing to those in need by sewing oversized lap quilts and/or pet beds. Sewing machines will be set up and all supplies will be made available. Items made will be donated to the community. Intro to Paper Quilling (Ages 18+) Instructor: Pam Lacy Cost: Free Wednesday January 12 1:30-3:30p If you would like to come and see what Paper Quilling is all about here is the opportunity. Pencil Drawing Made Easy (Ages 18+) Cost: Free Tuesdays 1-2:30p Tuesday afternoon drawing offers an encouraging, relaxed atmosphere in which to create and learn. Bring your materials and projects and take advantage of any instruction needed in technique or skill. Materials will be available for anyone who needs them.
Mosaic Class (Ages 18+) Instructor: Melissa Wiley Cost: $45 Wednesday January 12 9-12p Come and explore the creativity of Mosaics. We will be making a 5x5 plaque entitled “Free Style Kaleidoscope” using stained glass, beads and mirror. Cost includes all materials, instruction and use of tools. Please dress appropriately (covered shoes and long pants). Pieces will be grouted for you and available for pickup within a week.

Your creation will become part of your apparel! The class involves unique and interesting techniques using a variety of fascinating

We will use previously made paper, dried plants, magazine pictures and other bits and pieces of found objects to put together a creative composition on canvas. Examples will be provided or you can use your imagination! Heart Strings (Ages 50+) Cost: Free Tuesdays 10–12p Bring your instrument and join in this open group, playing a variety of songs including old hymns, bluegrass, country and folk music. Mountain Dulcimer Lessons, Beginner/Intermediate Level (Ages 18+) Instructor: Willis Jones Cost: $20 for four lessons Wednesday January 5, 12, 19, 26 2-3p Learn to play the old time Mountain Dulcimer with Willis Jones! Please bring an instrument that is ready to play. This one hour session is for those who are interested in learning, have questions about the dulcimer or are very rusty in their playing technique. There will also be practice time from 3-4p at no additional charge. Senior Chorale Cost: Free Thursdays 10 – 11:30a Join this lively group who loves to sing a variety of songs including show tunes and popular songs. This group is led by Cherry Smith. The group is open to anyone who is looking for a low stress, less demanding group with which to perform. No audition required.

Special Events “Try Us Out” (Ages 50+) Thursday January 6 9-10a Cost: Free Are you new to the center or want to know more about our programs that we offer, then you don’t want to miss our “Try Us Out” session. This will be a session to meet staff, find out what programs we offer, take a tour and ask questions about the center and its programs. You will also be given information about any new programs being offered in the next month. Light refreshments will be served and some free try it out vouchers for certain classes will be given. Instructor: Tonya Van Hook Tai Chi for Arthritis is an evidence, low-impact Tai Chi form modified for seniors. This is an advanced Tai Chi class for those already experienced in Tai Chi. Qigong (Ages 18+ Classes will not start until January 10) Mondays and Wednesdays, 11a Cost: $5 per class (50% discount for Silver Sneakers®, Renew Active™, and Silver & Fit® eligible participants). Instructor: Tonya Van Hook Qigong is a part of traditional Chinese medicine that includes easy to learn, gentle, flowing movements that stimulate the meridian system of the body and promote relation and mindfulness. Class work also includes warmups, gentle stretching of all the major joints, and breath work. Evidence-based studies show
that Qigong practice can improve a wide variety of chronic health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, while reducing stress and promoting emotional health and mental function. With adaptations this class is appropriate for everyone regardless of physical limitations and can be done seated in a chair. We offer several different time options. Whether your choice is swimming laps, aqua jogging or just doing your own thing we have a time to fit your needs. Community Center Recreation Programs
Congratulations to all those who completed Step into Fall and participated in the Turkey Strut! Over the course of six weeks this group walked over 1.44 million miles and everyone saw an improvement of their one mile time. Awards were given to those who had accumulated the most steps, fastest time, most walking groups attended, and most improved. The top three steppers were: Elizabeth McConnell with 522,028 steps, Mary Stauss with 422,522, and Earlene Kun with 422,308. The top three fastest walkers were: Karen Cutshall at 13:45, Jimmy Boyd at 13:50, Sally Dana at 16:37. Most improved was Glenn Davis, and Jimmy Boyd attended the most walking groups. Be on the lookout for the next step challenge sometime in 2022!

FREE TAX ASSISTANCE Volunteers working through AARP-VITA will prepare your Federal taxes for free beginning Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at the Memorial Park Community Center. Acceptance of tax documents will be by appointment only between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Friday until April 8. Due to the ongoing Covid pandemic, tax preparers and taxpayers will wear masks. Taxpayers will have an initial intake interview with a tax counselor. Then the taxpayer will be asked to leave while the return is being completed. Approximately an hour later, the taxpayer will return to review their return with the tax counselor, receive their completed tax return and their tax documents. If the return is for a married couple, both spouses must be present for both appointments. All volunteers are trained using IRS and AARP-VITA standards and must pass an IRS test. They can prepare all individual and joint tax returns, with a few exceptions for certain complicated returns. There are no age or income
