John A “Art” Holsclaw is retiring from being an instructor at the Johnson City Senior Center @ Memorial Park Community Center. Art has taught an Acrylics class for the past 16 years. Vega Crummer, a former employee, recruited Art to teach art classes and he really embraced the canvas and has taught many students along his journey. She (Vega) said that Art really set the tone for his classes by showing his love for the people as well as the art. He would play soft classical music in the background while his students all worked on their own plans. He always made himself available to assist and offer creative suggestions. Just stepping into that room would immediately relieve you from any stresses you felt. The staff and students want to say a big THANK YOU to Art for sharing his talent with us and others and wish him well. Someone once said, “As this chapter of your life ends, may a new and exceptional one begin.” Congratulations! You will be missed.

The Top 4 Reasons People Move Later In Life

Individual health and functioning (safety)

Beliefs and attitudes (new beginnings)

Social pressures (finances, friends, social roles)

Physical environment of the home (house and yard, proximity to family)

A study found that people who had moved as part of a retirement plan were happier than those who stayed put. Seniors who made short-distance moves, staying near family and friends were happiest of all.

This is the period each year when Medicare beneficiaries can join, switch or drop their Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage coverage. This year, the Johnson City Senior Center is partnering with the Tennessee State Health Insurance Assistance Program (TN SHIP) to provide free and objective assistance in comparing Part D and Medicare Advantage plans. Trained Medicare counselors will be on hand on November 2 from 9am-12pm and to assist Medicare beneficiaries and their families in comparing Part D or Medicare Advantage plans for 2022. Appointments are required for this event and space is limited. For more information and to set up an appointment please call (423) 722-5205. Tennessee SHIP is a free program designed to help people in Tennessee with Medicare. Counselors are specially trained to answer questions and provide objective, easy-to-understand information about Medicare. SHIP receives grant funding from the Administration for Community Living, Department of Health and Human Services, to provide direct, local assistance to Medicare beneficiaries through one-on-one, counseling sessions (both in-person and over the phone), presentations, and public education programs.
