Dominion Senior Living of Johnson City Our family at Dominion Senior Living loves unconditionally and when it comes to our family, you are always family. Joe Crawford, among our very first to move in last year in August of 2015, was and still is life of the party. Joe’s contagious laugh, eagerness to participate in all life enrichment activities, and friendly smile are just a few of the great qualities that bring our culture alive here at Dominion. Joe was part of the National Guard and very talented. He had a stroke prior to joining our family. Through physical therapy, exercise classes, and the positive attitude to not give up, Joe has truly come alive. At 60 years of age, he said I’m back and I know I can do this on my own again. In January of this year, after 5 months of living in Assisted Living, Joe got his own apartment and had gained the knowledge and strength to live independently. YOU GO JOE! We were sad to lose one of our favorite residents but overflowing with joy and excitement for Joe. He now has a part-time job, participates in aquatic therapy every day, and is very active in the Senior Center. Joe is family and he visits every chance he gets. Like everyone, he has a bad day from time to time. If he finds himself sitting at home lonely, he gets up and heads to Knob Creek road, to see ‘his family’. He encourages our residents, and his laugh continues to radiate through our home. We are excited to share this wonderful ‘Love Story’. It is important to know that even though life throws us unexpected obstacles, we will prevail. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, Proverbs 3:5

Abigail WiseSocial Media Fellow, Healthy Living, The Huffington Post John Muir was onto something when he said, “In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.” Hikers battle bug bites, blisters and bruises for the sake of overcoming a challenge and enjoying some quality time with nature. But along with the snowcapped mountain tops and ocean views come an abundance of mental and physical perks. Here’s what hikers can teach the rest of us about leading a happier, healthier life. Hikers are creative. Forget the caffeine. Those looking for a brainpower boost need not look further than the closest trail. Research shows that spending time outdoors increases attention spans and creative problem-solving skills by as much as 50 percent. The authors of the study also point out that the results may have as much to do with unplugging from technology as they do spending time outside. “This is a way of showing that interacting with nature has real, measurable benefits to creative problemsolving,” David Strayer, co-author of the study, tells the Wilderness Society. Plus, it’s not only the lack of technology and surplus of trees, sunshine and fresh air that contribute to this creativity boost

October 2016 in trail blazers. Researchers from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education found that walking gets the creative juices flowing far more than sitting. Hikers are seriously fit. Hitting the trail works out your body as much as it does your brain. Just one hour of trekking can burn well over 500 calories, depending on the level of incline and the weight of the pack you’re carrying. Hiking is a great way to get a serious workout without putting too much pressure on your joints. “Trails are often softer on joints than asphalt or concrete,” Caroline Stedman, a seasonal Park Ranger at northern Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, tells The Huffington Post. “So I find myself feeling less stiff and creaky after a hike than a jog down a sidewalk.” If you head for the hills, weight loss results are even better. Not only are you burning some serious calories, but altitude itself has also proven a weight loss ally. Plus, tramping through the trails on a regular basis decreases blood pressure and cholesterol. Logging cardio in the form of hiking can lower blood pressure by four to 10 points, and reduce the danger of heart disease, diabetes and strokes for those at high-risk. And don’t lose heart if you’re not out of breath on the way back. Both the ups and downs have benefits when it comes to lowering cholesterol, but hiking downhill is two times more effective at removing blood sugars and improving glucose tolerance.

Meet the Staff Chyrl McLaughlin Program Coordinator

This month’s Meet the Staff spotlight is on Chyrl McLaughlin. “I joined the team about a year and a half ago not really knowing what to expect. I knew that I wanted in some way to help others and that I wanted to be involved in the lives of the senior population. I knew that this was the group of people that often got “swept under the rug” and sometimes forgotten. My roles at the Senior Center include being a program coordinator and also a volunteer coordinator. I enjoy working at the Johnson City Senior Center/ Memorial Park Community Center for many reasons. One of which is that we have opportunity, within one building, to serve all people, regardless of age, gender, race or financial status. People come here from all walks of life and we get to be a part of enriching their lives. How great is that! I have learned much about myself in the past few years. One thing is that I do not like to relax. I thrive on being busy and useful, and if the truth be known, I sometimes over commit myself. In my “free” time, I enjoy spending time with my family, my two grandchildren, my two dogs, and serving in my church. If I can ever be of assistance to you, please stop by and see me at the center. Be careful though, I might just put you to work!”

1. Exercise boosts brainpower -”Exercise increases energy levels and increases serotonin in the brain, which leads to improved mental clarity,” says Atkinson, director of program development for Cooper Ventures, a division of the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas. 2. Movement melts away stress “Exercise produces a relaxation response that serves as a positive distraction,” says Cedric Bryant, chief exercise physiologist for the American Council on Exercise. 3. Exercise gives you energy – Endorphins are released from the brain and you feel energized the rest of the day. 4. It’s not that hard to find time for fitness – squeezing 2-3 bouts of 10 minutes of activity is just as effective as 30 minutes all at once. 5. Fitness can help build relationships – Exercise is much more fun when you do it with someone else or in a group. 6. Exercise helps ward off disease – research has shown that exercise can slow or help prevent heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2diabetes and loss of muscle mass. 7. Fitness pumps up your heart – Exercise works your heart muscle and when it becomes stronger it pumps more blood per beat so at rest the heart rate is lower and has to expend less effort. 8. Exercise lets you eat more – Muscle burns more calories than fat. 9. Exercise boosts performance – Exercise strengthens muscles, increases flexibility, and improves overall performance. 10. Weight loss is not the most important goal – strive to feel better, to have more energy and be less stressed. (Information from WebMD)
