Ordering/renewing databases
Last year the BOE started requiring schools to track Parkway property removed from our schools. This of course includes weeded books and media. Basically, this means you will need to send Jim Hepler a brief email summary of the amount and type weeded when you want it removed, and he will update the district surplus property sheet to reflect his.

Great detail is not required, the number of boxes and a brief description of the media in each is enough. For example: 1 box of books, 1 box DVDs, 1 box mostly books with some VHS tapes. As a quick reminder, please use medium boxes and keep them under 50 pounds.

Transforming Norwegian Public Libraries As we think about designing collaborative spaces and how to best meet the needs of our community this article helps to frame our work in relation to our new program guidelines. One of our topics is addressing the library's physical spaces in regards to multi-use zones for a variety of educational experiences. In Norway the Library Space Programme emphasized developing change-oriented library spaces to meet the needs of the local community of each municipal library. The focus has been on the library as a centre of knowledge, culture and literature, as well as a local meeting-place and centre for multi-faceted activities. The thought was that libraries must ensure they meet the needs of their communities through a constant examination of how their collections, services and physical and digital spaces are functioning.
The project used the Danish model of the public library in the knowledge and experience society as a structural tool for its work, both theoretically and practically. The model defines the role of the library in terms of four spaces: ● the inspiration space ● the learning space ● the meeting space ● the performance space During recent years, libraries have become active spaces for experience and inspiration and local meeting points and the model pays attention to this phenomenon. The research underpinning the model found that libraries were moving from “collection” to “connection”. The new paradigm is that libraries are moving from ”collection” to “creation”. Both “connection” and “creation” are important goals for the library. Role of the library …to promote the spread of information, education and other cultural activities through active dissemination and by making books and other media available for the free use of all the inhabitants of Norway. Public libraries are to be an independent meeting place and arena for public discussions and debates.

Empowers Students as Creators
#ParkwayMakes Center Mini Breakout Games An alternative to small group / whole group Breakout/Escape games, is for students to work independently and open a container based on content as a center. The idea is that a small pencil pouch or a small lock box, and a few clues can be used within a shorter time period where 2-3 students can complete. Here is an example of the one that was created for a Discovery Education conference. The content contained facts about Charlotte, NC. Use this as an inspiration to create your own content based game. Here is the link to all the materials and a walkthru to creating this breakout. Taken from Panico’s Page.
Bonus Breakout EDU Resource At the Breakout EDU site there is a collection of early elementary games featured for kindergarten, first, and second grade. This collection contains whole class and small group games that support math, social studies, reading, and many more.
Builds Instructional Partnerships Here are just a few ways to promote instructional partnerships with teachers. The different examples showcase what the library has to offer in terms of services and resources. Each menu is linked for ease of viewing. Thanks to Hollie and Jenny for sharing their menu ideas.
Leads Beyond the Library Educator Standards Released at ISTE 2017 As we begin our work with teachers and Leading Beyond the Library with our buildings, the ISTE Standards for Educators provides a great road map for creating a digital learning plan and empowering students as creators. These standards will deepen practice, promote collaboration, and help rethink our approach to learning. The Stretch your EdTech Practice brochure provides guidance and a checklist to the new Educator Standards. This could modified to be a skills proficiency tool to use with staff to gauge technology PD needed for the building. Through synthesis of the data collected librarians will be to identify needs and be responsive to community (Program Evaluation Topic 2). The new standards also provide guidance as we strive to been seen as leaders in our buildings and target professional learning opportunities in the digital landscape (Program Evaluation Topic 4).
