@your Library Updates Calendar for Library Space Sign-up

I am excited to say that many of you are ready to book and use the library. If you would like to use the library please check the schedule to make an appointment or plan out your usage. The Calendar is a Google Sheet that can be found at www.tinyurl. com/FRlibrary. A couple of things to keep in mind would be: you need to log into your Parkway Google App account to have access and make changes to the sheet, you may want to make a shortcut on your desktop so that you have easy access to view available times, and please everyone’s time and delete any scheduled times you are going to be unable to use. If you need help, let me know.

Databases Once again this year the Fern Ridge databases are up and ready to use. They can be easily accessed at http://tinyurl.com/FR-databases or by going to the Fern Ridge Edline page, under library, and then databases link. The bookmark stickers of the usernames and passwords for students are ready to go. These usernames and passwords are to be used when student try to access the databases off campus. We have some great databases for student research: ● Business Insights: Essentials - Find information on companies, industries and more in the context of timely news, statistical data, and in-depth reports ● Credo Reference - Full-text articles from over 80 of the leading reference publishers ● Discovering Collection - Provides selections of reference, primary sources, creative works, and multimedia, including hours of video and audio clips in the areas of history, literature, science, social studies, and more ● Discovery Education - Educational videos, images, audio clips, resource materials, and much more to meet your digital media needs ● Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia - Over 25,000 full-text records, covering an array of topics. The database contains various images and offers brief biographies as well as information in a variety of subject areas ● Heritage Quest Online - A collection of American genealogical sources. Includes Federal Census data, Revolutionary War records, Freedman's Bank Records and more. ● Science Reference Center - Contains full text for hundreds of science encyclopedias, reference books, and periodicals. Topics covered: biology, chemistry, health & medicine, physics, technology, and more ● SIRS Researcher - Delivers the pros and cons on today's complex social issues ● Student Research Center - Students can research topics in a variety of subject areas by source type: magazines, newspapers, reference books, primary sources, biographies, photos, and more. ● World Book - Online access to the World Book Encyclopedia. Includes additional content such as primary sources, images, maps, and more

15 Google Search Lesson Plans & A Google A Day Challenges Since Google is one of the first places students go when giving a research task, Google has created a set of lesson plans that help students to pick the correct search terms, understand the search results, narrow the search, search for evidence, and evaluate source credibility. Each topic has a beginner, intermediate and advanced lesson. Terrific Websites for Science From the people at Graphite (Common Sense Media) we now have a science site that addresses everything from biology to chemistry to physics. Just for Fun - Happy Birthday to YOU Theoworlds allows you to make an online Birthday Cake. You can design its shape, decorations, borders, candles, etc. You can also write a card that goes with it. Students can then email the url of their creation and card, and a teacher can post it on a website.

Special Characters in Slides, Docs & Drawings

This year's Banned Books Week (held September 21–27), with its focus on comics, creates a particularly kid-friendly opportunity to introduce students to their reading rights.

Have you been creating a document and needed to make a math or science character that is not part of your keyboard? Now, you can create and search for special characters to insert into your slides, documents, and drawings. To perform a keyword search open the "insert" menu then select "special characters."

Banned Books Week

The St. Louis County Library is still running the library card campaign. This year SLCL has implemented an online registration module to streamline the process. They encourage schools to direct students and staff that do not already have a SLC Library card to http: //webpac.slcl. org/screens/schoolregistration. html to submit the online library card application. The staff will create library cards for those students and staff and deliver the library cards to your school to be distributed. Promotional Poster Idea

The Google Educast The people at Edreach have a weekly round up of the newest Ed tools from Google-verse. This resource highlights best practices for students of all ages and is hosted by Google Certified Teachers.

Not only will you be more proficient but you will look like a pro. Student Opportunities Show Me a Movie Contest - Edplus & METC Show-Me a Movie is a digital storytelling contest for students grades 2-12 in Missouri and its Border States (Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska). These students are invited to demonstrate their creativity and digital moviemaking skills in one of five categories. New this year, categories are designated for specific age groups. Also new for 2014, the area of focus for all submitted movies is STEAM related. All winning movies are showcased at a reception in February during the Midwest Education Technology Conference (METC).
