Know & Go

Updates @your Library I wish the library had‌ If you know of something that students need in the library, let me know what it is as soon as possible and I will see what I can do. The final day for Library Services PO's to be entered is next week. There will be no more orders processed for fiscal year 2014-2015 after this date. Funding is limited so make your request early!

EOC Logistics From my understanding the library will be in use for EOC testing the week of April 20th. This is actually perfect I will be out of the district most of the week for a library conference. I will not be at Fern that week, but if you need any assistance please don’t hesitate to email me. I will still be taking care of book circulation during that time. Good luck to all involved with EOC testing.

Libraries in the Internet Age Common Craft says they love libraries and librarians and want them to succeed. So they created a video to help the public understand how libraries have changed in the Internet Age. (Thanks for sharing Katie P.)

St Louis County Library Databases Many of you are looking for extra resources when it comes to biography units. Have you checked out the databases available at SLCL? In a recent visit to SLCL Headquarters, Colleen Hall in the Outreach Services Department showed me a few items that may be of interest to you. When accessing the databases for students go to http://www.slcl.org/research, click on For Students in the Subject Guides Grid. Once in the databases for students select American National Biography. Once a database is selected students will be prompted to put in their library account login information. (If they do not have a card they can sign up and get instant access to a library barcode and pin number at https://webpac.slcl.org/selfreg.) Colleen thought this resource would be appropriate for upper elementary on up. .

Show Me What's Wrong - Provide Tech Help to Students and Colleagues Screencast-O-Matic.com is the service that Richard Byrnes uses for the screencast videos that appear in his Practical Ed Tech playlist on YouTube. In addition to the screen recording tool Screencast-O-Matic offers a service that can help you help others with their tech problems. Show Me What's Wrong is a free service is designed to help you help others with their computer problems. To use the service enter your name and email address to have a custom URL assigned to you. You then send that url to the person who needs help. They open the link and can start recording their screens and talk about the trouble they're having. When they finish recording the screencast is sent directly to you. Applications for Education If you're the person in your school that everyone goes to for tech help, you know that trying to a fix a problem that someone can't quite describe correctly can be a trying experience. Show Me What's Wrong could make it easier for others to show you what they need help doing on their computers. Taken from http://www.freetech4teachers.com

More Poetry Resources for This Month ●

ReadWorks has a new selection of famous poems available on their website. The selection is organized by grade level. As with every passage on ReadWorks, each poem is accompanied by a set of guided reading questions. BoomWriter has put together new vocabulary sheets for Poetry Month. The poetry vocabulary is part of a larger poetry lesson plan for elementary and middle school students. You can download the vocabulary words and lesson plans as PDFs. Scholastic has assembled a big list of lesson resources for teaching poetry this month. One of the resources recommended by Richard Byrne is the Poetry Idea Engine. The Poetry Idea Engine is a simple, interactive tool that helps students create four types of poems; haiku, limerick, cinquain, and free verse.

What does it mean to be a librarian in the digital age?

Library Lessons The 8 Skills Students Must Have for the Future by edudemic.com Education has traditionally focused on the basic “3Rs” of reading, writing and arithmetic. However, as the ever increasing pace of technological innovation drives changes in the world, educators must re-evaluate whether the skills they teach truly provide their students with the best opportunities to succeed in school, the workforce, and in life overall. This naturally leads to the question of what those skills are or will be, and while there are other excellent suggestions out there, Pearson’s 2014 edition of “The Learning Curve” report lists the 8 skills as those most necessary to succeed in the 21st century.
