Updates @your Library By the Numbers The acquisition of eBooks continues to rise steadily. 20% of teens are actually buying their reading material in this format, compared to 23% of 18-29 year-olds, and 25% of 30-44 year olds. ~ Reported by Nielsen
Resources for Digital-Age Learning The Office of Instructional Technology offers examples of how students can produce and share new knowledge to demonstrate their understanding of ideas and concepts. The page also contains a how to for common web 2.0 tools. Digital Learning Day During this event technology is center stage along with how teachers embrace digital learning strategies. The Mindshift site shares articles that shed light on the use of technology , how it supports learning, blended I learning, and deciding what technology is needed. PBS Learning Media released a survey and created an infographic that illustrates what teachers are saying about educational technology. Their site also contains over 100,000 digital resources for the classroom.

Timelines as Digital Portfolios and Reflections on Learning Building timelines can be a good way for students organize the things they have learned and created in the course of a school year. Click to view. Padlet Walls - Customize Columns Padlet is not new but they have some features that may make life easier. Padlet is a favorite because it is a flexible fit for a lot of different uses. One of the suggested uses is for creating KWL (Know, Want, Learn) charts. To provide students with guidance on where to place their notes a custom background can be created in Padlet. The background is a just a screenshot of a three column page that’ s made in Google Documents and then uploaded to Padlet. DPLA - Digital Public Library of America For those of you who were at our development on Jan 3rd and saw the DPLA (resources from America's libraries, archives, and museums) presentation you know that it was not available in the district at that time. It has been unblocked and you should be able to access it at dp.la without issue. This is a great content hub with several tools: ● timeline - do a year search and it will tell you how many resources for that period of time exist - search by decade - great for those era projects ● map - search - if you are studying by region ● book shelf - 8 million items -be sure to refine the search ● manuscripts ● sound bytes ● primary sources

Google Graphing Calculators for Chrome Desmosalso offers a Chrome app. The Chrome app version of Desmos works like the web version. Along with all of the graphing functions Desmos allows you to share your equations and graphs. Desmos graphs your equations as you type them and redraws them as you alter your equations.

Graph.tk is a free online graphing utility that is also available in the Google Chrome Web Store. Graph.tk allows you to plot multiple functions through its dynamically re-sizing grid. To graph an equation on Graph.tk just click the "+" symbol to enter a new equation. One thing that isn't clear the first time you use Graph.tk is that you need to delete the existing default equations before you start. National Readathon Day @your Library National Readathon Day (NRD), January 24, is closer than it appears. Just in its first year, the event came out of the Random House/Penguin merger in 2013 and asks participants to read four hours that day, from noon to 4:00 PM in their respective time zones. EdcampSTL An Unconference - February 7, 2015! At an UNconference, the agenda is created by the attendees at the beginning of the meeting. Anyone who wants to initiate a discussion on a topic can claim a time and a space. UNconferences typically feature open discussions rather than having a single speakers at the front of the room lecturing, although any format is permitted. This form of conference is particularly useful when the attendees generally have a high level of expertise or knowledge in the field the conference convenes to discuss, unlocking the creative genius of the attendees so that all may learn and be inspired! http://www.edcampstl.org/
Student Opportunities St. Louis County Library will begin a new program series in January designed to help teens gain skills to transition to adulthood. The series is called In the Know @ Your Library and will explore topics such as budgeting, interview tips, how to buy your first car and more. A full program schedule is available here. The series is free and open to the public, but registration may be required.

Student Contest Penguin Books has launched an Out of the Easy college scholarship essay contest for students! This title has been nominated for MASL's 2015-2016 Gateway Readers Award. The contest is open to 12th grade students and homeschooled students aged 17 or 18, and the prize is a $5,000 scholarship towards college.
