#FutureReady - Community Partnerships St. Louis County Library 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a new program from St. Louis County Library that encourages families and caregivers to read 1000 books with their young children before they enter kindergarten. Studies have shown that families who start reading aloud to their children at birth help strengthen language skills and build vocabulary -- two important tools when children begin learning to read in kindergarten .Details at: www.slcl.org/1000books Great to share with parents at Open House or Curriculum Night! Well Said: The written word closes the distance between continents, between the dead and the living and the not-yet-born, between the real and the imagined. It can change minds, hearts, and even the world. ~ Traci Chee, author of The Reader

The ISTE Standards for Students are designed to empower student voice and ensure that learning is a student-driven process of exploration, creativity and discovery no matter where they or their teachers are in the thoughtful integration of ed tech. ~ www.iste.org Stay tuned to ALA Facebook and Twitter channels in September.

Jason Ohler, TechEd Brian Lewis, CEO of ISTE Jaime Casap, Google Education Daryll Adams - Edtech Leadership Angela Meirs - Student Voice James Steyer, Common Sense Media Hadi Partovi, Code.org
Five Tech Ed Trends Reshaping Education Ohler’s session offered much more than a pep talk: It presented a sweeping view of current and emerging technological trends that are shaking things up in the K–12 space including: big data, augmented reality, the semantic web, extreme BYOD, and transmedia. Read more here. 3 things students should have before they leave high school: A professional social networking, a digital portfolio and an About Me page (George Couros). Two tools to help in this process:Digital portfolio Seesaw gives students a platform for showcasing their photos, videos, drawings, text, PDFs and links. All content is accessible to teachers as soon as it’s uploaded, but students still have the ability to organize their work. Adobe Spark provides users with three options: Post, Video and Page. Post lets users create attention-grabbing images optimized to social media, while Video’s narration function makes it ideal for creating oral presentations online. www.edtechmagazine.com What does it mean to be a librarian in the digital age?
At the June ISTE convention new functions and product releases from Google promised to bring lessons to life in new ways, and make it easier for teachers to engage students.
Students Explore The World with Expeditions Following the success of its Expeditions Pioneer Program, Google released its Expeditions app to all teachers. The move gives students across the globe the chance to embark on more than 200 VR field trips via Google’s low-cost Cardboard headset.
Connecting Wirelessly with Google Cast for Education The free Chrome app Google Cast for Education simplifies screen sharing in both directions: Using the devices they already own, students can display their screens on the projector at the front of the room, and teachers can display their screens on each student’s device.
Google Form Quizzes Educators assessing their students through Google Forms will now have the ability to grade multiple choice and check-box answers automatically so they can spend more time teachers. The upgrade to Quizzes also lets teachers provide immediate feedback to students who answer a question incorrectly. Read more at www.edtechmagazine.com

#ParkwayReads In preparation for Banned Books Week check out the Dirty Thirty. While the list was compiled in an older blog post, it is still worthy of review. http://activerain.com This list was compiled based on surveys from 1965 to 1982 of the most challenged books. I kept the list to mark off books as I read them.
goo.gl/BiMwC2 Lynda.com Update Lynda is a site that provides a variety of tutorials on a great many topics related to technology and software programs. Our usage statistics no longer justify have a subscription for all secondary students but, because of our library card initiative, we can give students and teachers access through SLCL. Here are the directions for access that we have gotten from them. Teachers who don't currently have a library card can get them even if they don't live in Parkway. They just need to take their district ID and driver's license to a local branch and they can get access. Directions: ● From the library home page, www.slcl.org, "click" on the word "Research", one of the categories listed just below the colorful St. Louis County Library (SLCL) logo/letterhead. ● On the "Research" page, find the category "eCourses", listed below the word/category (bold blue background) Research, on the left (basically) column area of this page. ● Once you "click" on "eCourses", you will find 6 eCourse publisher/categories and Lynda.com is in the middle. ● "Creating a Profile", establishing a user name/login/password, will require a valid SLCL library card #. ● (Another "entry" to Lynda.com homepage - at the very top-left of the SLCL homepage, you will find a box for a "Catalog" search....if you change it to a "Site" search, a tab option just below the search box, you can type in "Lynda.com" and it will take you immediately to a Lynda.com entry page - well, you have to select it) What does it mean to be a librarian in the digital age?
