Library Surplus Removal Updated Procedure Jim made a couple of tweaks to the procedures document https://goo.gl/aLmrda on Library Surplus. He added a couple points of clarification that came up from several schools. 1. Textbooks and materials in textbook/resource manager should NOT be listed and sent to mim - this is strictly a building item. 2. Do not send any surplus materials out to Facilities or Library Services via interoffice mail. Library Services can not store any surplus items. Library media items will be picked up when Facilities is able to store and take them.

#FutureReady - Curates Resources & Tools Reverse Image Lookup Have you ever wondered where an image that someone used in a presentation or on a web page came from? Then, Tineye , a free tool that conducts reverse image searches is for you. In a reverse image search you’re searching for the places where an image has been posted online. Conducting a reverse can be a good way for students to discover information about an object or location featured in a picture. When the image is located through Tineye students can click through to the source to see how the image was used and what was written about the image. Performing a reverse image search can provide students with a good lesson on digital footprints. How Do You Build a Successful Coding Program? With Hour of Code coming soon and the buzz around Parkway about Computer Science this article for Edutopia is timely. The article highlights what one district knows, what they did right, and how they got there. On that same note there was recently a webinar, Coding Clubs for Elementary. In this ISTE webinar basic tips were shared along with some resources that might be of help. Tips: ● Open to grades 1 to 5 - be aware of reading issues (1st and 2nd had a hard time with reading and instructions) ● K-2 club and then 3-5 club meet for an hour after school the entire year ● Each year this club has moved to the next level so parent volunteer in the field now come to support the learning ● No charge for the club - if resources are needed parents chip and buy what they need ● Is there support when students get to middle school? They are developing game design and robotics clubs ● Elementary Code club page ● Coding Resources Site ● Code Warrior Robots ● The Foos - is creating curriculum - K-5 love this site ● Family code night What does it mean to be a librarian in the digital age?
#FutureReady - Professional Learning The #GoOpen Movement As part of program evaluation we all looking at providing equitable, free access to quality, vetted resources that support a variety of literacies. As we look to be #FutureReady this has to include digital content and possibly OER. Librarians are being brought to the table to discuss this topic because they have the expertise in resource selection, meta-tagging, organization, and curation. Parkway has registered as a #GoOpen District, which means we are looking at the possibilities for implementation. What is this OER you speak of? Open Educational Resources (OER) are free and openly licensed educational materials that can be used for teaching, learning, and research. The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation describe OER as the simple and powerful idea that the world’s knowledge is a public good and that technology in general and the web in particular provide an extraordinary opportunity for everyone to share, use and reuse knowledge (which are based on Creative Commons).

Librarians are using similar techniques taught to students on how to evaluate websites in order to vet and curate #GoOpen resources. To help provide expertise in vetting quality and appropriate resources, rubrics have been developed through the Office of Education Technology and the #GoOpen website. There are several trusted OER resources for lessons, assessment, videos, audio and more that support specific curriculum topics: OER Commons - a free, accessible online library that allows teachers and others to search and discover open educational resources (OER) Gooru - A free personalized learning solution that helps teachers to find, remix, and share collections of web resources on any K-12 topic CK-12 - This Foundation provides a library of free online textbooks, videos, exercises, flashcards, and real world applications for over 5000 concepts Open ED - Teach, Assess, and Analyze with the leading K-12 Resource Library Summarized from: Teacher|Librarian Oct 2016 The Trending Librarian
