1.

According to a study from the National Center for Literacy Education (NCLE), school librarians are highly involved leaders playing a critical role in their schools through consistent and sustained collaboration with other educators. From Edutopia, here are Tips for Coaching Teacher Teams: http://www. edutopia.org/blog/tipscoaching-teacher-teamselena-aguilar

The Coaching Standards The first of the six standards is Visionary Leadership. It’s about making a shared vision a reality. The idea is to inspire and lead patrons down avenues that are manageable, interesting and even uncomfortable. Part of the role of a coach is to take students and teachers to places and do things that they may not have considered.

The standard reads: Technology Coaches inspire and participate in the development and implementation of shared vision for the comprehensive integration of technology to promote excellence and support transformational change throughout the instructional environment. A. Contribute to the development, communication, and implementation of a shared vision for the comprehensive use of technology to support a digital-age education for all students B. Contribute to the planning, development, communication, implementation, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans at the district and school levels C. Advocate for policies, procedures, programs, and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision represented in the school and district technology plans and guidelines D. Implement strategies for initiating and sustaining technology innovations and manage the change process in schools and classrooms Activities of a Visionary Technology Leader: ● Define, contribute, and lead schools in planning and supporting digital-age education for all students ● Analyze, contribute, lead teams in developing technology infused strategic planning ● Identify, advocate, and lead activities for technology guidelines, procedure, and programs ● Identify, implement, and design strategies for initiating and sustaining effective technology innovation and change ● Provide evidence of improved teaching and learning as a result of coaching others ● Produce resources related to shared vision, planning, advocacy, and innovation beyond your building

Destiny Upgrade from 12.0 to 12.5 Last week Follett release Destiny Library Manager 12.5. There were two updates, one to WebPath Express (which we do not have as of now), and Searching. ● In Universal Search patrons can access their reading history from the Bookbag tab— including any Follett eBooks they opened or checked out, as well as checked-out print books. ● In the classic Destiny Library Search patrons can limit search results by reading level, interest level, or reading program.

Using Follett TitlePeek for Promotion Use A question has come up about the use of TitlePeek’s information/pictures for the creation of promotional items and use on the school library site. According to Follet you can prepare what is needed for your schools using the TitlePeek, so long as it is not used commercially for other financial gains.

Follet Chanllenge Here's the basic description: The Follett Challenge showcases and rewards educators who are aligning their curriculum and approach in order to teach the skills needed in the 21st century, and who are implementing a collaborative program with others in their school. In order to enter, applicants must demonstrate how the program is preparing students for the demands of the 21st century and complete the entire online application, which includes a 3-5 minute video about the program. Entries close on Jan 9th. http://www.follettchallenge.com/

Adding a Fine The question was how to add a fine when it's not specific to a book (like if a book has been withdrawn but you forgot to add a fee, or a high school charges fines for students to use the printer, or damage to uncataloged stuff). The answer is actually buried with Destiny Help, so Jim was able to put the directions together for adding a fine. Basic instructions: 1. Log in as your librarian or circ desk login. 2. Bring up and select the patron in the Circulation tab. 3. Go to the Fines area on the left. Then Click Add Fine button. (right side) 4. Now, where it says Reason, there's a button to the right that says Other. Click this. 5. On this screen, on the line that says Fine Type, the drop down menu will say Copy Specific. Change this to Patron Only. 6. Make up a name for the fine (this will show up in the circulation area like a standard fine). Hit Save. It'll take you back to the main fine area. 7. Now just change the amount to what you want, add some Fine Note information if needed, and hit Save.

eBooks & Digital Collections School Library Monthly, March 2014 In the past three years many changes have occurred in the course of the technological revolution. Those changes include: ● personal devices that are better designed for digital content ● publishers changing and adding to the eContent offerings ● platform modifications ● widespread acceptance of eBooks and content. ● the adoption of BYOD in our district The eBooks and eContent available are no longer and novelty but rather an expected part of the library’s collection. The amount of eContent being used is huge, students are accessing music, film, photo, and social activities in digital format. Just how much growth has there been? Overdrive (digital distributor of eBooks, audiobooks, music, and video titles) reports that eBook use in 2009 was 8.7 million digital titles being checked out, compared to 70 million in 2012. When thinking about what to offer in the library as far as eContent there is a wide variety, such as: eBooks. eReference, eMagazines, and streaming film. With all of this available eContent we have a way to encourage the BYOD initiative in our schools and libraries to meet the students where they want to be, online. Students enjoy being online, mining information and data quickly, and want access even when the library is closed, so investing in digital content is a natural part of the library evolution. Digital Acquisition Suggestions: ● Study the digital landscape and make purchasing decisions based on student needs ● Needs may include research, interest, or curriculum content ● Budget - take the money planned for digital content and divide it up into categories, for example: ○ 40% scholarly collection ○ 10% recreational streaming ○ 20% reference collection ○ 20% eFiction ○ 10% specific to supporting your unique patron base (STEM, eLit, or professional development)
