Elementary and Middle School Growth Measure - Post Assessments As Library Services looked at the assessment calendars for the entire district, it will be best if we go ahead and get our benchmarks out of the way before the "testing season" is upon us. For elementary and middle school, the window for taking the tests is from March 2nd until April 3rd. Hopefully this gives you plenty of time to get that done. Remember, do your best to administer the test to all of the same kids that you did before. If you miss a few, that's perfectly fine. If there are kids who have moved in, have them go ahead and take it. Just try to get as many of the same kids as you possibly can. The biggest thing to remember is that in order to show growth, students need to be diligent in inputting their student numbers. This is how we match their previous score with this current score.

NEW AASL Grant - Your LIbrary as the Necessary Resource in Your Community In recognition of her service to and influence on the profession, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) is proud to announce its newest award: the Ruth Toor Grant for Strong Public Libraries. The annual award, made possible by the generous support of Jay Toor, will support public school libraries in creating initiatives that promote and position their school library as necessary resources in their communities. The grant will provide financial support to a public school library that is interested in increasing local awareness regarding the importance of school libraries and certified school librarians. One recipient will be awarded the Ruth Toor grant each year. The recipient will be awarded $5,000 to support an initiative on the strategic importance of school librarians and how their role can support their vision or goal for the school system and advance it. Please see the AASL press release for additional details. As an AASL affiliate organization, MASL encourages its members to apply for this grant, as well as consider joining AASL as a member. In addition to access to excellent grants and awards like this, membership in AASL provides school librarians with access to top-tier professional support, resources, and discounted access to AASL professional development events. ***Let Bill or Kim know if you are interested in applying for this grant and remember that all grants need to go through Denise Farinella

Ethnicity & Gender Stats in Destiny Jim now has ethnicity put into the patron extract and altered the import so that it is in the user defined fields, and updated the gender information so that it is also in the user defined fields. This will allow you to see some useful pertinent circulation stats by these fields, including tiered breakdown (for example, black males). User Defined Field 1 is Ethnicity User Defined Field 2 is Gender. Please do not alter these fields on any of your patrons. Likely the biggest use for these fields is in Patron Reports. For example, go to Reports --> Patron Reports -->Patron Statistics - Historical. Leave the "Group by" as Patron Type, then change the following drop down box to User Defined 1, and the next drop down box to User Defined 2. Run the report, and you'll see a listing of total circulations by ethnicity, divided by gender. Be advised, there are some people who do not have a gender or ethnicity listed (especially staff). They will show up as "other" in reports like the Patron Statistics - Historical. What does it mean to be a librarian in the digital age?
