TENT CONSIDERATIONS If your goal is a lightweight backpacking experience, carry no more than 1⁄3 of your body weight. The average tent-per-person weight ratio should be around 3 lbs. or less (e.g., a 6-lb. tent is ideal for two people).

Capacity A one-person tent is ideal for an ultralightweight experience, though you might consider a two-person tent to house you and your gear. The floor measurement is taken at the widest point of the tent, so also think about the tent’s shape and sloped walls when determining how much usable space you’ll have.
Understanding mm-rated Coatings • mm – water column height measured in millimeters. A 1,500mm rating is the minimum coating classification to be considered waterproof. A 1,500mm coating withstands 1,500mm (or 5-ft.) of water for more than a minute before a single drop penetrates the fabric. Most waterproof coatings range from 1,500mm to 3,000mm.
Understanding Denier The weight of tent fabric is measured in denier. The higher the number, the heavier and more durable the material. 50-denier is considered a lightweight fabric, though it isn’t as durable as the more commonly used 70-denier fabric.

SLEEPING SLEEPING BAG CONSIDERATIONS Manufacturers are not required to follow any standardized method to measure the temperature ratings of their sleeping bags, so comparing bags across brands can be like comparing apples and oranges. Manufacturers typically use the European standard for temperature ratings (EN 13537) or the ASTM 1720 rating system, both of which measure thermal insulation using a heated mannequin.
Chart Definitions • Temperature rating – Measures the lowest air temperature in which a person obtains a comfortable night’s rest. It is highly dependent on each person’s heat output, elevation and other factors. • Fill weight – The total weight of the filling material. • Carry weight – Fill weight, plus weight of shell, zippers and stuff sack.
Temperature Rating A sleeping bag only retains heat, so its temperature rating is largely dependent on each person’s heat output. A man’s skin is around 15% thicker than a woman’s. In EN 13537 standards, the comfort value for a woman is 5ºC higher than for a man. Women should purchase a lower temperature-rated bag to compensate for the physical differences.
Down vs. Synthetic Insulation • Down – A natural filling that compresses more than synthetic insulation. Its higher loft traps in more heat than synthetic insulation. The downside is if it gets wet, it stays wet. • Synthetic – Man-made insulation that insulates even when wet and dries more quickly than down. Choose this over down if there’s any possibility of getting wet.

When shopping for sleeping bags, keep in mind that a sleeping pad and liner contribute to the total temperature rating of the combined sleeping system. Going without a sleeping pad can whittle away at least 15° off a sleeping-bag’s temperature rating. Sleeping pads are not just for comfort, but are crucial to keeping warm. A warm body sleeping on a cold ground results in major heat loss through conduction, which can lead to hypothermia. When shopping for a sleeping pad, consider its weight, thickness and compactness.
Chart Definitions • Thickness – Measured at full inflation for self-inflating pads. Generally, the thicker the pad, the greater lift you have off the cold ground. • Closed cell – A dense sleeping pad, like foam, with tiny air pockets. It provides more insulation than an open-cell pad, but isn’t as compact. • Open cell – A sleeping pad that uses air for insulation, like a self-inflating pad. It is usually lighter and more compact than a closed-cell pad. The downside? Air provides less insulation than closed-cell materials. • Winter Camping Tip – Reap the benefits of a closedand open-cell pad by combining them. Place the closed-cell pad on the ground and top it off with an open-cell pad to obtain the optimal insulation in cold weather.

Determining Torso Fit Tuck your chin in to expose the seventh vertebra (the one that protrudes from the base of your neck). Then place your index fingers around the top of your hip bones with your thumbs extending behind your back. Draw an imaginary line from the tips of your thumbs to your spine. Measure from the seventh vertebra to the imaginary line to determine your torso length. Most people fall between a 16" to 22" torso length.

When putting on a fully loaded backpack, use the help of a table or waist-high platform to leverage the load until you put the pack on. The hip belt holds about 80% of your load, so start your adjustment there. Simply bend at the waist, clip the hip belt together, then pull the straps evenly until the belt fits snuggly over your hips. Next, adjust the load lifter straps located at the tops of the shoulders until it makes a 45° angle between your shoulder straps and the pack. Then, make adjustments to the sternum strap for a comfortable fit across the chest.

HYDRATION OPERATION HYDRATION Water serves many important functions in the body, like regulating your temperature through sweating, transporting nutrients, lubricating joints and facilitating digestion. Keeping properly hydrated is a must while doing physical activities outside. Measuring hydration levels is an individualized science because it depends on a person’s metabolic rate, body mass and size, and external environmental conditions like temperature and humidity. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, a body-water deficit of greater than 2% of a person’s body weight causes a level of dehydration that can adversely affect performance. As a general rule of thumb, maintain your optimal performance by drinking at least 1 liter of water an hour while doing moderate activities in moderate conditions.
FLUID LOSS RATE In two to three hours of doing a moderate activity, a person can lose 1.5 liters of water, which results in muscle cramps, lowered strength and fatigue. After three to four hours of activity without water replenishment, a person can experience dizziness and nausea. After seven hours without water during moderate activity, a person may lose 5 or more liters of water and experience heatstroke.

Look at the packaging to determine the compressed volume. • Dry sack/dry bag – Does not compress the items and air inside, but protects items from water.
Components • Roll-top closure – Usually uses a Hypalon™stiffened tab to fold the bag over. Roll the Hypalon™ strip face-side down three times, then clip the ends together. • Compression straps – Straps that cinch down to compress the volume. Apply equal weight to each strap when pulling down. • Valve – Releases the air inside to decrease the volume.
Seams • Fully taped seams – Keep the contents protected from water when not fully submersed. Bags and sacks with fully taped seams will eventually leak over time when submersed in water. • Welded seams – Are waterproof when fully submerged in water, even over time. Don’t entrust expensive electronics to a dry sack alone since seams can leak when fully immersed. What’s the difference between freeze-dried food and dehydrated food? WATER WATER TREATMENT Keeping hydrated while outside is crucial to maintaining your strength. Going without water while active may lead to muscle cramps, fatigue or dehydration. Treating water before you drink it is a crucial step since untreated water may contain bacteria, viruses or parasites – all which can make you severely sick. The most common protozoa contracted through untreated water is Giardia.
Filter Versus Purifier • Filter – Removes bacteria, cysts, protozoa and parasites. A filter is sufficient while in the backcountry in the U.S. • Purifier – Removes all of the above, plus viruses. Purifiers are ideal for international travel, especially in developing countries. According to EPA standards, a purifier must remove 99.9% of all viruses.
Other Water Treatments • Boiling water – Boiling water also removes viruses, but it can be time consuming and inconvenient. At sea level, boil the water at 212°F for five minutes for complete treatment. The boiling point for water above 13,000 ft. drops to 188°F. At this elevation, the water must be boiled for 20 minutes for complete treatment. • Iodine tablets – Treating water with iodine tablets also removes viruses. The downside is the unpleasant taste left by the tablet. Use two tablets per 1quart of water, wait at least 30 minutes, then drink the treated water. A word of caution – iodine tablets are not effective against Cryptosporidium.
