EARLY CHILDHOOD

Classes for families with children ages birth to before kindergarten entrance.

Together, families engage in activities and experiences led by licensed staff that nurture children’s social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and language skills.

A Typical ECFE Class Includes:

Family Time: together families enjoy a safe classroom filled with developmentallyappropriate learning activities, such as art, blocks, puppets and sensory play. A portion of this is spent in “circle time,” where parents, children and teachers come together to sing, read and participate in literacy-rich music and movement activities. Adult Discussion: adults join together for a discussion group led by a licensed parent educator. Each session, joys and concerns are shared, in addition to topics pertaining to child development. Depending on the class, discussions occur either within the classroom (non-separating) or in a nearby parent education room (separating). Children’s Time: while parents are in discussion, children participate in childdirected play-based activities facilitated by a licensed Early Childhood teacher. Teachers prepare the classrooms using developmentally-appropriate research-based curriculum that focuses on meeting each child’s individual needs and development.

Birth-5 years + families Back for a third year! Calling all outdoor lovers! We will be touring local parks all summer long bringing all the fun of ECFE to you. Families who attend will enjoy art projects, music and movement activities, interactive stories and more. Plus each family will go home with a new book and other surprises. Events sponsored by City of Big Lake, Big Lake Area Early Childhood Coalition, and the Big Lake Schools ECFE Program. Join us in a park near you this summer! Resources ECFE Home & Child Care Visits

Big Lake Schools’ Early Childhood Family Education Program offers several home visit options for families and child care providers in an effort to share knowledge and resources. This is a free “personalized visiting” program that comes to you! Struggling with bedtime routines? Looking for new ideas for potty training? Or maybe you have other questions about your child... we can help! Families can choose to meet in their own home, a public place, or one-on-one at our ECFE center. One of our knowledgeable staff members will meet with you and together conquer any struggles or questions. Baby & Me! These visits are for families with a new baby. An ECFE representative will come to your home with information on classes, resources in the community, and a free gift! An introduction into baby massage can also be included in this visit upon request. These visits are free. Child care Provider 1-on-1 Connections We are here to partner with you! Our staff can connect with you about topics or questions you have pertaining to child development, challenging behaviors, social emotional issues, health and nutrition and more. The parent educator can meet with you in your home, at school, over the phone, or via email. These visits are free.

ECFE Come Play with Me (Child care Visit) ECFE teachers are available to visit your provider home monthly (or on a schedule that works best for you). We will provide storytime followed by fun, engaging, hands-on activities for the children in your care, with your involvement. In addition, we will provide handouts for you to share with your families about the activities we presented and how they support child development and learning. This is a great opportunity to get connected to our program and be informed of all school and community activities that may pertain to you as a child care provider!

Breastfeeding Resources Breastfeeding is one of the most important things you can do to give your baby the best start in life. Child Passenger Safety / Car Seats Sherburne County Public Health wants to ensure that all children are traveling safely in vehicles. Check out our car seat distribution class! Follow Along Program Babies and young children grow and learn at their own rate. However, some children may need help to grow up healthy and learn skills such as sitting, walking, or talking. Minnesota’s Follow Along Program can help you track your child’s development and let you know if your child is playing, talking, growing, moving, and behaving like other children. Family Home Visiting This service, for pregnant women, their partners, and families with young children, provides education and support to help families to reach their needs. Women, Infants & Children (WIC) WIC is a federally-funded health and nutrition education program that provides free supplemental foods to promote good health for pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infants, and children up to age five.

Then it’s time to screen! Early Childhood Screening is a quick and simple check of how your child is developing. Between the ages of 3 and 4 is the prime time to screen as it can detect possible health or learning concerns, so that children can get help before they start school.

Who needs to be screened?

All Minnesota children 3-5 years old who are not currently enrolled in kindergarten. You will have to submit screening information for kindergarten entrance.

FAQs What if I feel like my child isn’t ready?

Screening isn’t about “being ready” for anything! It is just a snapshot in time that looks at where your child is physically, emotionally and mentally.

Should I wait until my child is closer to kindergarten entrance age?

No, this screening has nothing to do with kindergarten entrance other than it needs to be completed before a child enters kindergarten. It is best to have your child screened right when they turn three years old so that if any needs are discovered they can have two full years to work on them before entering kindergarten.

What if my child fails the “test?”

Test? This isn’t a test. There is no passing or failing grade given. It’s just a snapshot in time measuring where they are at in various areas.

2019-2020 School Year Stepping into Little Learners

3 years old + parents Children attend with their parents on Wednesdays and experience a typical ECFE class where parents and children do activities together, and then parents move to the parent education room for discussion time while children remain in the classroom with an early childhood teacher. On Mondays, children will attend class independently without parents.

Hive Time is a wrap-around child care option available for children who are enrolled in our Little Learners preschool program. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s considered an extension of the program since it follows the same philosophies and expands on the learning occuring in the preschool classroom. Availability: Hive Time is open from 6 am to 6 pm, and is available for non-preschool days. CHILD CARE Kids Club is a Big Lake Community Ed program that offers before and after school child care in a fun, safe environment for students in kindergarten through age 13.

We have two convenient locations: inside of Liberty and Independence Elementary Schools. Grades K through 2 attend Liberty Elementary, and grade 3 through 13 years old attend Independence Elementary.

Enrichment Summer Explorers

Ages 3-5 years Join early childhood teacher, Miss Sara, as we have lots of “FUN IN THE SUN!” This class focuses on developing critical social/emotional skills such as taking turns, good listening, self-control, and being a good friend! Our daily schedule will consist of outdoor learning time, snack, circle time, small and large group activities, and learning centers focusing on early math and literacy skills. A Day of Drawing Camp

Ages 5-12 years If it’s drawing, painting and cartooning you’re after, then this is the camp for you! Join us for a day full of drawing fun. Eureka Engineering

Grades 3-5 Eureka introduces students to the core skills of robotics and other STEM areas through engaging, hands-on learning opportunities. Student groups will work with Lego Mindstorm kits, which include both programming and mechanical components. Small groups will be mentored by experienced and passionate students from both high school and collegiate level robotics teams. Grade 6 Join us for band lessons and get a head start on learning about your instrument before school begins! We will work on basic playing skills and instrument knowledge that will be helpful when you start band classes in the fall. Firearm Safety

Ages 11+ years This firearm safety class consists of classroom and field experience going over safe handling of firearms and hunter responsibility. The field experience allows students to learn and demonstrate commonly accepted principles of safety in hunting and the handling of firearms. A parent/guardian must attend the first night of class and is welcome and encouraged to attend the other class sessions. Class cost includes a registration fee of $7.50 payable to Community Ed and a DNR fee of $7.50 due upon completion of the class. Student must attend all 6 classes, plus field day to complete the course requirements. Field day will be held on Saturday, Aug 24 at Monticello Gun Club. Certificate issued at end of course. Kids Staying Safe While Home Alone Grades 3-5 This 6-hour course covers basic first aid, water safety, vehicle safety, home emergencies, injury prevention, personal safety and healthy living. Ages 13-18 years This opportunity is open to beginners who are hoping to learn new skills and diving techniques, and/ or more advanced divers who wish to learn new dives and improve their skills. Starting at 8 am, athletes will arrive in tennis shoes and workout attire for dryland, which will run till 8:30 am. Divers will then change into their swimsuits and meet at the pool deck to begin warm-ups. Warm ups will consist of dry approaches and other techniques that are given from the coach. A variety of positions will be focused on each practice and there will be time for open board. Make sure your child brings a water bottle, tennis shoes, workout clothes, swimsuit (one piece for girls), and a Chamois towel. Divers can choose to attend 4 or 8 sessions anytime during the class. Community Education Advisory Council: Big Lake Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Community Education Advisory Council is responsible for discussing and making recommendations regarding Community Education programs, classes, policies, budget and staffing. A WWII Vet’s Life

Bayer Ross went from stitching clothes as a tailor in his father’s dry cleaning shop in southwest Minnesota to patching wounds as an Army medic on front lines in North Africa, Sicily and Europe. Bayer Ross saw action during the D-Day invasion and worked in a Concentration Camp after liberation.
