Edinbu rgh Apa r tm en t Blo c k Krucker Bates Studio - with Jeanne Vancoppenolle TUM - 4th Year Studio This project explores the urban aspect of ‘sameness’ such as examples of reputation, through plans, facade details and urban context. A site within Edinburgh was given to each group which would then involve creating a modern apartment addition to the cities living. Third week of studio involved field-trip to Edinburgh. The four days meant exploring different eras of architecture, Georgian, Victorian and historical castle sites including ruins. To better understand circulation, repetition, unique details that created these beautiful masterpieces.

James Craig’s 1766 Plan of New Town in Edinburgh was an expression of the Enlightenment, inspired by the Grand Tour and the ideal landscapes portrayed by Poussin and Claude. It was the product of the aesthetics of the Picturesque, a vision of a city of crescents, circuses and terraces linked in an informal way, with continuous palace façades that, while monumental in scale, reflect the patterns of occupancy that lay behind them. - Studio Krucker Bates brief Study of Sameness

1:200 Case Study Model Bruce Krucker: Triemli Zurich

‘Like Bath in John Wood’s 1725-50 plan. Instead of a ‘set piece’ urbanism, a continuity of streets and spaces was envisioned, that facilitated city life and responded to its everyday needs.’

It passes through a number of distinct areas including Colinton Village, Saughton, Balgreen, Roseburn, Dean Village, Stockbridge and Leith. Each of these areas is linked to public transport making it ver y easy to join or leave the walkway along its route. Leith is the old maritime centre of Edinburgh and the Port of Leith steeped in shipping histor y. Its shipping heyday is behind it now but with its dockside restaurants and bars, Leith is now a vibrant place to hang out for weekend meals or drinks down by the water.

Self-su s ta in in g Ec o Liv i n g Te A k au Re g ion, Ne w Zea la nd VUW - 4th Year Studio This urban network of buildings and walkways focuses on development of an organic farm development within New Zealand context. This project is based around the fundamentals of a selfsustaining farm system which creates eco-friendly contribution of food source for individuals living within the New Zealand landscape. How can landscape influence the relationship between architecture and land. Can this process enrich the embodiment of balance between giving and receiving from the land.

2018

Architectures place within Land? Idea of land being a misunderstood place. The idea of respect being lost by the building controlling the site instead of the land being the priority through-out the design. This project recreates timber structure with fibreglass facade used for the overall forms. The materially used specifically to ensure overall the architecture can be reconstructed and taken off the land to preserve landscape with future use.

‘When New Zealand is more artificial, she will give birth to an artist who can treat her natural beauties adequately. This sounds paradoxical, but is true.’ - 1907, Katherine Mansfield

2017

This project is for a new music school to be placed within the centre of Wellington city. This building would be used by both universities Victoria, Massey and also parts of the public. The design was based around incorporation W e l l i n g t o n ’ s architecture through the music school. Exacting parts of the per-existing buildings on site to be developed into the overall form of the school. These spaces acted as expressing Wellingtons character through the urban scale to domestic scale project such as the Music school.

Christc h urc h Ear th qua k e Memo ri a l Museum Eva n s Ba y, We l l i n g t o n VUW - 3th Year Studio This museum is based around the devastating Christchurch earthquake in 2011. The natural disaster taking a number of lives is a significant reason of the formation of this memorial museum.

2017 The internal spaces intended to express and create trust through structure being exploded while incorporating the views of nature from the building. Through-out the museum are different paths to express optional directions of exploring how the process of growth can happen after a disaster. While ensuring the relationship between land and architecture is through-out the experience.

The scales between spaces and the use of light reflects different interpretations of how individuals process grief, change, growth in regards to whom was affected by the 2011 Earthquake.

2016

The red rock site known for being a beautiful look out point half an hour out from Wellington city. A playful holiday home used as a family spot to get away from the city. Two pods cater either a large group of people or two separate groups using the site. The hutts are hidden up high on the rock face, accessible only by walking. This designs intention and process is to become a part of the landscape, with the building being clamped into the hill side. The exterior steel structure of the building created the clamping system to connect land to architecture.

This timber pavilion project was to create little sheltered spots located through-out long hiking walkways that go through different parts of the South Island of New Zealand. The idea that the land could grow to become a part of the pavilion, and vice versa with being balanced with nature.
