Autobiography My love of problem solving through creativity and design started at the age of eight and I have been creating designs ever since. Growing up on a farm in rural South Dakota, my parents taught me how to practical solutions to solve problems. I have a B.S. degree in Costume/Apparel Design from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus (1991). After completing my education in 1991, I launched my own custom clothing business, which has been delivering diverse apparel designs, including extreme cold weather outer gear to bridal and evening gowns to personal clients.

I had originally thought of Interior Design when I was in school at the University of Minnesota, my roommate was in the program and I was always fascinated by it. She did wonderful perspective drawings. I was constantly amazed. I have always loved architecture and this was cemented in a trip to Austria many years ago. I have always been asked by friends to assist in redecorating a room with colors and styles. Eventually, I was asked to design some furniture and cabinetry for a local shop and was hooked. In 2010, I completed a certification in Kitchen and Bath Design from Century College. I took and passed the NKBA certification for an Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer. I was drawn to the Academy of Art University because I wanted a Master’s Degree, but did not want to do research. I wanted to learn to drawn better in order to communicate more effectively with clients. The Academy of Art University has a great reputation and program. The online option was intriquing and allowed me to study without relocation.

Sacred Space means something different to everyone. It is a place to reflect on life, our own and that of ones we have lost. Sometimes, it is a memorial to a person or event. Sometimes, it is just a space that we can call our own. The space that I have created is centered in a park or natural area. It is open, yet provides some shelter. The open roof mirrors the water feature in the center. There are benches to relax upon.
Sacred Geometry Project
The basis for this Sacred Space is an octagon. Eight is the number of the directions of the wind that circulates the structure. The Breath of the Compassionate is seen in columns on the floor plan. This emphasizes the quality of air. The center of the structure is represented with a oculus over a pool of water of the same shape. The fire of the sun, pool of water, open doorways (air) and cement floor (earth) represent the four elements. The center oculus represents the heaven and the earth (above and below).

Aesthetics in design is related to the senses. The space should awaken or charge the senses. How does the space make the individual feel? Are they relaxed? Are they calm? Aesthetics can be found in several ways when entering a space. There is the layout - sight. The design should allow the eye to travel throughout the space and absorb it. Colors are a key portion of this as well. The materials or textiles are used to create a tactile sensation that my invoke a kind memory for someone. The sense of sound brings acoustics into light. If it is an eatery, the sense of taste is also livened. The use of aesthetics is key to any interior design. One wants to create a space where people want to visit, work or live. The textiles chosen for the furniture have softness to them. They are durable at the same time. The colors are used in proportion against neutral walls. The curved living wall provides a soft scent of plants blooming while cleansing the air. The fabric texture balances the smooth glass of the sconces and light fixtures. The acoustically insulated walls keep sound from traveling where it is not wanted. In other words, patient rooms are designed to keep confidential information in a confined area. This allows for the space to be quiet and tranquil. The carpeted areas also help absorb the sound as well as provide for a softer walking surface. The whole experience is to create a space that promotes health and wellness.

Bowspirit reminds one of a clipper ship of days of yore. It is not to be confused with a bowsprit, which is the front extension of a ship’s bow. A clipper ship is known for fast sailing and quick tacks. This is not unlike an innovative ad agency. They have to be able to maneuver quickly in the marketplace to retain speed and gain status. A bowspirit can also be considered the force that takes makes an archer take a bow from a quiver and fire it. An archer must have a good eye and accuracy to makes its target. The Bowspirit Advertising Agency is taking these concepts as they open the West Coast office in beautiful downtown San Francisco.

The Domino Maison House uses columns as supports instead of the traditional wall system. This allows walls to move freely with out the structural constraints of a traditional structure. This type of structure is found in the Modern or International style of building. The movement was headed by LeCorbusier. Below, you see the exterior and interior of the Villa Savoy located just outside of Paris. This model was used as inspiration for the following project.
