children and families remains. Tens of thousands of “diamonds” have resulted, with many more continually emerging.

RON MANDERSCHIED President

ROBERT J. BEST Chairman

DIAMOND-MAKING A M ES S A G E FROM THE CHAI R M AN AND PR E SI DE NT A few carbon atoms, some firm pressure and precious time turns a chunk of graphite into one of the earth’s most valuable substances – a diamond. In and of themselves, the elements involved are familiar, common and ordinary. But together, in just the right mixture and environment, something rare and special happens. For the past 122 years, Northwestern Settlement’s main focus has been diamond-making -- providing just the right mixture of services, resources, opportunities and alternatives to meet the complex needs of our neighbors and change lives. In doing so, we accomplish both the ”ordinary” – a bag of food, helping hand, or shoulder to cry on – as well as the extraordinary, transforming families and communities. Myriad programs have been innovated, initiated and 2

Northwestern Settlement

implemented over the years. The lending library, pasteurized milk program, shop classes and “coffee house” (an alternative to neighborhood saloons that promoted alcoholism and domestic strife) were perfect for their time, but have since disappeared into history. Other programs like Emergency Services, Camp and Head Start are as important today as ever for scores of our neighbors. And still other initiatives, like Noble, Adventure Stage Chicago and Rowe Elementary School have gone from bold, almost impossible ideas, to prestigious, nationally recognized models. They have changed high school dropouts into academic stars, taught youth to be the storytellers of their own lives, and made parents believe their children will graduate from college. Environments shift and elements get tweaked, but the unending goal to positively turn the tide for mothers, fathers, students, “scholars”, seniors,

And we continue to “tweak.” This year, Rowe will grow from 478 to 600 scholars, grades K-6. As Rowe continues to meet its aggressive academic goals and test at levels akin to the district’s top schools, the School Age program has changed accordingly. With enrollment growth (and the closing of Peabody), School Age now operates full-time at Rowe, serving more children and proving crucial support to scholars. The ripple effect of increased Rowe enrollment also positively impacts House In The Wood Camp. In the coming year, 225 Rowe scholars will experience “Classroom in the Wood,” joining their classmates and teachers for a one-of-a-kind week of peer bonding and science-based outdoor educational field work. When combined with the 400 plus summer campers who participate annually, House In The Wood will provide its powerful programming to more youth than ever. Keeping with this theme, Head Start will grow as well. Even as other local providers were shuttered due to poor performance, our highly-regarded Head Start will enroll 108 children 3-5 (up from 68 last year), utilizing two new classrooms created on the second floor of the main building. Emergency Services, our oldest program, and Adventure Stage Chicago (ASC), one of our newest, continue to underpin all of our work. Emergency Services fights on, despite government funding cut-

backs and increased demand, to assist as many neighbors possible. And ASC has adapted its program model to combine productions and literacy work in schools with civic engagement, using theatre games and artists to more deeply engage neighbors. The “jewel” of their work is an annual theatrical production, created in collaboration with staff and neighbors and reflecting the challenges, dreams, fears and hopes of community members. As we celebrate another year of service, and look forward to our 125th anniversary, we would be remiss if we did not celebrate our board, auxiliary boards, donors and volunteers as key elements that make it all possible. You read to children after-school, help with academic testing, usher matinees, pack baskets, serve Thanksgiving dinner, adopt families, send a check or two during the year and so much more. Thank you for always being there. And a special “shout out” goes to our auxiliary board members who, when not doing all the things mentioned above, spend their free time planning the Glitter Ball, Style Under the Stars, Spring for the Settlement, Paddle-palooza and the Cherub Brunch, to name a few. You are also diamond-makers. It has been an incredible year and an amazing journey. Many thanks to you for making the Settlement what it is today.

Head Start With the academic and social success of children in mind, the Settlement’s Head Start program provides comprehensive child development services for children ages three to five and additional health and social services for their families.

Rowe Elementary School

House In The Wood

Seeing education as a priority in the West Town community, leaders responsible for cofounding the Noble Network of Charter High Schools utilized their experience to found a charter elementary school.

House in the Wood is a residential summer camp in Delavan, Wisconsin dedicated to serving low-income children from Chicago.

School Age Program With the goal of counteracting the negative consequences and vulnerabilities underserved youth experience in their communities, Northwestern Settlement’s School Age program offers year-round services.

AmeriCorps Project YES! Each year, Project YES! (Youth, Education, Service) connects approximately 40 college graduates with disadvantaged youth in Chicago’s various communities.

“ Rowe has a 96% attendance rate with 100% parent engagement. There are currently 478 scholars, and 127 children are on the enrollment waitlist. 4 Northwestern Settlement

The education landscape in Chicago is shaky, to say the least, but I think Rowe is and can be an example of students first in a sea of reactive commentary.”

At Head Start 71 children served with 29 graduates moving on to Rowe.

At School Age 142 Rowe Scholars and 25 Head Start students participating

What Golden Agers means to me is being alert and active, happy and viable. It gets us all together and we have a good time. I would say my favorite part of Golden Agers is the parties; we play Bingo… I’m really impressed with the volunteers, the quality and the effort that they put into these events. I also enjoy watching shows in the theater.”

There are currently six Auxiliary Boards at Northwestern Settlement. With participation totaling nearly 300 active members, Auxiliary Boards form the fabric of the Settlement’s long history and provide essential support through organizing major fundraising events. •

• • •

The Evanston Woman’s Board was formed in 1909; the group raises funds through an annual Dollar Letter appeal and supports the Settlement through its endowment The Winnetka Board was formed in 1923 and organizes Style Under the Stars, a fall event featuring current fashions from North Shore boutiques The North Shore Board was formed in 1936, and sponsors the Glitter Ball, a black-tie dinner event and auction held in the fall at the Four Seasons Chicago The Park Ridge Board was formed in 1989 and hosts the Cherub Brunch and Auction The Chicago Board was formed in 2004 and hosts the Spring for the Settlement party in the spring The Northbrook Board was formed in 2013 and is heavily involved in after school programming, as well as developing pen-pal partnerships between Settlement children and children from other parts of Chicagoland.

In addition to events, Auxiliary members adopt families during the holidays, chaperone School Age and Golden Agers field trips, run a Mother’s Day gift shop for Head Start and After School children, volunteer at Rowe Elementary School, and much more. 10
