foreward_[and backward] A
You've already stepped into a trap. By flipping to the first page of this portfolio, you have put yourself in a position to be directed, or maybe even misdirected, by a very present, but distant author. In magazine production there is an assumption made that a person reads a magazine from front to back, fumbling through the first several pages of underdressed teens a la Gucci or Prada or over-priced watches brought to you by Rolex, to (finally) arrive at a table of contents. Whether one utilizes the table of contents to re-enter the magazine elsewhere, or pardons the interruption to arrive at the next underdressed teen, eventually the reader is guaranteed to succumb to the highly organized (3 dimensional) space of the magazine. Constituted within a series of unassuming 2-page spreads, the myriad of page-flip article continuations, interspersed advertisements, snappy logos, and graphic diversions embed various degrees of interruptive techniques (transgression, insertion, appropriation) that promote a mode of magazine navigation: Seemingly static objects or moments-whether magazines or buildings-anticipate a user's engagement. The diagram at left re-makes these operative techniques of interruption (among them, insertion and transgression) onsite. This exploration into the organizational space of the magazine offers a strategy to approach the political and cultural contexts of the United Nations in the first semester studio; further, the appropriation of each studio's generative techniques serves as catalyst for the design of this portfolio.
