condominium towers jefferson parish, louisiana
MAGNOLIA, Daniel Libeskind’s design for the ST RAYMOND TOWERS, is inspired by the 360 degree panorama offered by the site onto the unique bend in the Mississippi River. The 700 condominium units of these two 40-story towers additionally offer views Lake Ponchartrain to the North and downtown New Orleans to the East. These views are accessed from the dramatic diagonal balcony 'cuts' inscribed in the towers' facades. The fully glazed concrete towers sit atop a tiered landscaped parking garage which extends into the site and features a promenade, majestic pools and communal and themed gardens, tennis courts and amphitheatre. The important landscape feature is also brought onto each of the towers' facades in the form of a 'green waterfall'. This vertical garden joins a series of public outdoor terraces and creates a third space between the towers. The vertical garden wraps over the steel crenelation of each tower to veil the private balcony terraces at the upper levels. Each tower also offers a variety of indoor amenity: restaurants, cafes, groceries, gaming, entertainment and exercise rooms in addition to chapel and leasable business space.

FLAMES OF MEMORY, Daniel Libeskind’s design for the Jewish War Veterans Memorial, serves to keep alive the memory of all Jewish veterans worldwide, and particularly the Canadian Jewish veterans who fought and died in not only World War II, but all wars of the past two centuries. The site is located in Earl Bales Park at the corner of Bathurst St. and Sheppard Ave. At the center of the memorial is a 150-200 seat amphitheater. Surrounding the stage is a sweeping, angled structure crenelated by eight candles, alluding to a Hanukkah menorah - a theme chosen due to Hanukkah’s celebration of the fight from the freedom of tyranny. A pointed, flame-bearing structure pierces the wall, representing the “shamash,” the head Hanukkah candle used to light all the others. The rear of the amphitheater is flanked by the Wall of Remembrance and the Wall of Honour, on which are inscribed the names of those who died in past conflict. Encircling the Walls of Honour and Remembrance are the flags of 30 countries that participated in the war against the Axis forces, as well as the insignia of several Canadian armed service branches.

boys and girls club gulfport, mississippi
REJUVENATION, Daniel Libeskind’s design for the Boys and Girls Club/Hope Center of Forrest Heights is inspired by the courage and vivacity of those who endured Hurricane Katrina's devastating force in August 2005. The Center will replace the facility destroyed by the storm and will become an anchor in the revitalization of the decimated Gulfport area. Designed and funded in collaboration with Rockworks, the Bret Favre Foundation, Step Fourward, Operation Hope, Force of Nature and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, this pro bono project will house after school/summer learning and recreational activities for boys and girls of all ages. The building will also welcome parents and community seniors for recreational and learning activities. The Center hopes to cultivate intergenerational activity to foster a sense of place and stability, all the more important in the aftermath of the adversity the area has faced. The building's three vaulted roofs shelter an educational volume, a recreational volume, and a central spine atrium. The clerestoried atrium will feature the Club's most important and loved space: the games room. The educational component consists of learning centers, technology center, music/dance room, and art studio. A large gymnasium will host a variety of activities, from basketball games to youth performances. Outdoor playgrounds, community gardens, and picnicking areas will be developed on the site to extend the Club's communal mission.
