Architecturedistinguishesitselffromotherartformsinthatthe disciplineisaffectedtoahigherdegreebylimitationswhichthe architectcannotcontrol:Besidesthesimplefactthatabuilding cannotberealizedwithoutaclient/investortherearesocial conventions,topographic,functionalandtechnicalfactorswemust takeintoaccount.Oneoftheskillsnecessarytosucceedasan architectisthustheabilitytoreacttoagivenframeworkinacreative andintelligentmanner.Insteadofperceivinglimitationsas unwelcomeobstacleswewouldliketowelcomethemasakindof resistancewhichcanreleasecreativeforces.

Thestudioworkwillstretchfromasmallscaleinteriordesigntothe geographicscaleinaprojectforalargebuildingplacedinasemiurbanindustrialzone.Shiftingfocusineverytaskwewilllookintothe principlesofwood,steelandconcreteconstructions.

Acentralthemewillbetherelationshipbetweenconstructionand architecturalexpression.Inordertofocusontheconnectionbetween thesecategorieswewillcollaboratewithstructuralengineerswho willparticipateinthestudioworkaslecturers,supervisorsandcritics.

TeachingMethodology

Thepathleadinguptoanarchitecturalprojectismostoftenmore chaoticandlesslinearthanonewouldlikeittobefromanacademic pointofview.Atthesametimeeverystudentissupposedtodevelop his/herownworkingmethod.HencewedonotconsiderIttobethe teacher’stasktoteachaworkingmethod.Wewouldrathersee ourselvesasinterlocutorsconfrontingthestudentswithinsights resultingfromourownexperienceandencouragingthemtomake theirownchoices–inagreementwiththeteacherorbyrebuttingthe teacher’spointofview.Thestartingpointorthegeneratingideafora projectcanbehighlypersonalandcaningeneralnotbejudgedas rightorwrong.Anideaisinthatsensenotdiscussablewithinthe frameworkofarchitecturaleducation.Ourdiscussionswillinstead revolvearoundtheprocessoftranslatinganideaintoarchitecture withthearchitect’stools,i.e.sketches,models,horizontalandvertical projections.

Giventheintimatecorrelationoflightandarchitecture,their dependencyandinfluenceonhumanperceptionandexperience,the studiofocusesonastronginterdisciplinaryapproachofLight, Architecture,Art&Engineering.Byorchestratingthevisibleandthe invisiblethroughoutthedesignprocesswewillallowhumancentered andempathicspaces.Thesepoeticdimensionsaswellasthe tectonicpropertiesofarchitectureareenhancedandconveyedby usinglightanddarknessasmaterials.

TheaimistocreateasynergybetweenLight&Architecturethrough aninterdisciplinaryplatform.Architecturewillbeobserved,analyzed, discussedandinterpretedbymeansofadesignbasedapproach wherelightisthecommonthread.Modelingandexperiencinglightat differentscales,fromworkingmodelstoimmersivelargescale modelswillbeafundamentalpartofthisjourney.

TeachingMethodology

Theoryandpracticesupporteachotherinparallelbyapplying theoreticalknowledgetoexperimentsandprojects.Themethodisto learnthroughobservation,siteanalysisandpracticaltesting;firsthandexperience.

Asdaylightisdiverseandvaries,theStudiomethodissitespecific intheNordiccontext.Gainedknowledge,methodologyandpractical exercisesaretransferableandcontextualizedtoanydesired geographicalpoint.

FortheSpringtermwewillworkonbothsidesoftheSwedish costline.Atthemeetingofwaterandlandwewillcreatearchitecture andinfrastructuretoenhancethedevelopmentforasustainableuse oftheocean.

WewillworkatDjuröoutsideStockholmandontheIslandof SkaftöinthemunicipalityofLysekil.Inbothlocationwewill collaboratewithMarineresearchers,exploretheirmethodsand needs.Thereisalsotheconnectiontolocalenvironmentsandpeople aswellastoturismandeducationalissues.

Conductingresearchinrealenvironments,testingnewtechnologies anddemonstratingprototypesisnecessaryforaneffectiveinnovation process.Today,therearefewplacesintheStockholmarchipelago whereKTHcanconductfield-basedresearchontheBalticSeaand itscoastallandscapeinasimpleandsustainableway. 40minutes’drivefromSlussen,oranhourfromKTH,wehave accesstoanareaatafencedmunicipalwaterandseweragefacility. Youcanaccessthesitebyboatandquicklygetouton Kanholmsfjärdenandfurtheroutontheopensea.KTHhas establishedamobileworkshopmoduleandasmallerworkboatwitha heatedcabinforyear-roundwork.Atthestation,theyarecurrently conductingfieldtestsofunderwaterdronesandhydrofoiltechnology forsmallboats.

Project4

WedevelopthelearningsfromP3andcreateanArchitectural proposalforanextensiontoKristinebergMarineResearchCenteron theIslandSkaftö,Lysekilskommun.Afterlecturesandtutorialswith externalexpertsinsustainabledesign,climatedesign,andstructure, wewillmeettheresearchersatKristinebergandexploretheisland anditsspecificconditions.Throughtheprojectwewilldevelopment aneco-tectonicfocusaroundsitespecificdesignandarchitectural sustainabilitywiththeprogressiveprogramofanextensiontothe Marinecenter.

Youwillproposeanextensionwhereideasandtheproductionofa NewBlueFoodcantakeplace.Theextensionoradditionwillprovide workbetweenresearchandhospitality.Youwillcreateanew architecturewhereresearchers,scientists,investors,chefs,food entrepreneurscanmeetandcreatewhatisproducedandharvest rightoutside.

FSisanarchitectbasedinStockholm.He hasworkedasalectureratKTHsince2016. Heisoneofthefoundingmembersinthe collectiveUglycuteandparticipatedinthe ArtandArchitectureBiennale(2003and 2010)inVenice,andarerepresentedinthe collectionsofModernamuseet.

Thestudiowillthroughouttheyearexploredifferentaspectsof architecturalexperience.Thefocuswillbeonthefundamentalsof architecture;light,movement,scale,proportion,mass/void,geometry, etc.Investigationswillbemadeonthepreciseandsensitiveuseof thesebasicelementstogetherwiththeorganizationofspaceand program.Environmentalsustainability,withaspecialinterestin woodenconstructions,andsocialinclusionwillbeaddressed specifically.

Inproject1(2022)geometricalandirregularformsandpatternsas generatorsforarchitecturalspacewillinitiallybeanalyzedinselected architecturalmasterpieces–thatlaterwillbealtered.Inproject2 (2022)spaceanddaylightinanurbandensecontext,willbe researchedinordertodesignasmallartspaceforcontemporary sculptureinStockholm.

Inthespringthestudiowillstudydifferentartisticinterdisciplinary toolsandmethods,firsttherelationtodanceandchoreographyand laterbetweenfilmmakingandarchitecture.Inproject3(2023)a danceschoolwillbedesignedinthesuburbVårberg,whileproject4 (2023)willlearnfromtheJapanesecontextexaminingdiversity, metabolismandotherconceptionsofspaceandtimeandresultina filmstudioresidenceinTokyo.

TeachingMethodology

Thisstudioinvestigatesdifferentexperiencesofarchitectureand conceptionsofspaceinrelationtothesynthesizingdesignprocess. Basicarchitecturalconceptsareexploredthroughamethodology whereinstudentsandteacherscollaborateinakindofresearch-bydesignstructure.Thestudentsdefineandformulatetheirown projectsfromagiventopicandself-programtheirprojectstoreflect ontheproblemsandpossibilitiesdescribedintheanalysisand definitionofthecontext.Theaimistoprovidetoolsandmethodsin ordertogivethestudentsanindependent,innovative,artistic, professional,ethicalandscientificidentity.Everyprojectisspecific andindependent,butalsorelatestothegeneraltheme.

ReinterpretingSymmetriesandForm

Throughdeeperstudiesofemblematicbuildingsandtheirspecific beautyandqualities,thestudiowilldevelopanunderstandingfor symmetricalandirregularcomposition,geometricalorrandomform asgeneratorsforarchitecturalspace.Wewillfirstdocument,rerepresentandanalyzeexistingarchitecturalmasterpieces.Inthe secondpartoftheprojectwewilldevelopindividualarchitectural projectsbymakingalterationsofthestudiedbuildings.Theproject definitionisoptional;deconstruction,studiesofmannerism, reinterpretation,paraphrase,additions,alterationsetc.

Project2

ArtSpaceinStockholm

Byre-defininginterpretationsandusingmethodsfromthefirst project,aswellasstudyingtheinterplaybetweenart,spaceandlight, thestudiowilldesignanartspaceforcontemporarysculpturein Stockholm.Theprogramincludesanexhibitionspace,workshop areasandasmalllibrary.Thesurroundingurbancontextandhowit canbereshapedtocreateafictiveparallelexperiencewillbeofgreat focus.Studieswillbemadeofculturalurbanlandscapesand sustainableecologicalinitiatives.

Project3

DanceSchoolinVårberg

Inthisprojectthestudiowillstudydifferentartistictoolsandmethods focusingondanceandchoreographyanddevelopindividual architecturalprojectsinvestigatingtherelationshipsbetweendance, movement,gravity,bodyandspace.Thebriefisasmalldanceschool forthelocalyouthinthesuburbofVårberg,intendingtousedance andschoolpedagogyastoolsforsocialsustainability.

Project4

FilmStudioResidenceinTokyo

InthisprojectthestudiowillstudyJapanesetraditionaland contemporarycultureandarchitecture,includingimportantconcepts suchas‘Ma’and‘Oku’.Thebriefhasitsstartingpointinthe understandingofthediverseurbanfabricoftheTokyometropolitan areaaswellasintheconceptoffilm-making(directing,editing,and producing)inrelationtoarchitectureandcontemporarycultural movements.Thesestudieswillbeappliedinthedesignofafilm studioresidenceinTokyo.

WelcometoHealthandWellness!We’reastudiointerestedinthe architectures,forms,andsystemsdedicatedtothelivesthatwelive andsharewithothers.

Ifwethinkofthepublicasanever-changingandcollectively negotiated“we”thatisconstantlybeingremadeincomplexwebsof socialrelations,hierarchiesofpower,andsystemsofcontrol,thenwe canthinkofpublicspaceastheterritorywherethatnegotiationtakes place.Thisiswhereweassembleandwherecollectiveformsof subjectivitycanemerge;itisalsoaplacewherethatsubjectivitycan becontestedandremade.It’saplaceforfriction,conflict,discord, anddissent,butalsoforkindnessandintimacy.Aplacewhere subjectivitiesareabletoexistintheplural,andtocontradict,align with,anddivergefromoneanother.Thisisaspacethatposes questionsaboutwhatcomesnext,asmuchasaboutwhatisalready righthere,rightnow.

WiththethemeofHealthandWellness,weareinterestedin exploringarchitecture’sabilitytosustainandmaintainlife:Thelifeof bodiesaswellasthelivesthatweliveandshare.Usingthe typologiesoftheGym,theKitchen,andtheHospitalaspointsof departure,wewillspendayearinvestigatingthesesystemsat shiftingscales,fromthelocaltotheterritorial,andspeculatingabout whatafuturearchitectureforalifetogethercouldbe.

TeachingMethodology

Thestudioreliesonamethodthatencouragesanopennessto multiplicity(ininterests,perspectives,anddisciplines),whereinwe employequalmeasuresofcriticality,optimism,joy,andrigorinorder toencourageyoutodevelopyourownmethodsofarchitectural researchanddesign.

Thecoursesallrevolvearoundasetprogrammatictypology.Each briefwillbeclearandhands-on,butopen-endedinnatureandeach projecttypicallystartswitheachstudentresearchingthe preconditions,definingtheprogram,andsettingthescopefortheir individualprojects.

Inparallelwiththedesignproject,eachcourseisaccompaniedbya seriesoflecturesandtextseminarsexploringtheory,typology, method,andpractice.Tutoring(individuallyandingroups)isheldon Tuesdays.LecturesandseminarswilltypicallybeheldonFridaysas willoptionalsessionsforindividualtutoring.

Project1 Fitness

Fitforwhat!?Oneverystreetcorneragym,ineveryparkagym. Bodiesinendlessmotion:warmandinterlinkedbyspeed,bybreath, byvapor,andbychoreography.Inhabitingaformofarchitectural mega-systemthatconsistsofdiscreet,stretched,andinterconnected spacesthatmakeandshapethebodiesthatoccupythem.Asa citywidesystemofdistributedwarmandwetspaces,wewillusethe Gymasatypologicalpointofdepartureforspeculationsonwhata futurepublicinfrastructureforwet,exhausted,andexhilarated togethernesscouldbe.Yourtaskwillbetoproposeanddesigna newgym,aspatialinterventionforthecollectivecareofbodies, somewhereinconnectiontoStockholm’sexistinggyminfrastructure..

Project2

GutFeeling

Forthesecondproject,we’llturntothespacesoflunchtime architecture.Wewilllookatexistingtypologieslikeschoolcafeterias andcooperativekitchensandspeculateaboutfuturepublicspaces organizedaroundthepreparationandsharingoffood.Startingfrom thekitchen,you’lldefineanddesignapublicprogram,located somewhereinStockholm..

Project3-4

TheKingdompt.1andpt.2 Hospitalsarearchitecturalmegaprojects,sometimesreachingthe scaleofsmallcities,andthespringsemesterwilltaskyouwith designingaregionalhospital,replacingoneoftheexistingsevenin Sweden.ReferencingthehospitalinLarsvonTrier's1990stvshow Riget(“TheKingdom”),thisisaprojectthatisasmuchabout handlingacomplexspatialprogramasitisaboutunderstandingthe veryhumanprocessesandsituationsthatemergeinside.Hospitals aresitesforpreciselasersurgeryjustastheyaresubjectto architecturalbeliefsaboutthehealingpropertiesofwoodenveneer, thesoundofleaves,andperhapseveninthepresenceofghosts.

Inproject3,wewillcollectivelyresearchanddetailaprogram;you willthenchooseasiteandmakeanindividualconceptualproposal foranewregionalhospital.

Inproject4,youwillrefine,detail,andworkonthepresentation materialforyourhospitals.

TheHousingStudiowillexploreanddesignmasshousingsolutions forasustainableurbanfuturethroughrevisitingthehistoricalABCCity(andotherNewTowns)andbyproposingcontemporary solutionsthroughthemodeloftheDEF-City.Asthepostwarcity wasexpanding,amixofArbete(work),Bostäder(housing),and Centrum(commercialandcultural)becamethemodel.Inthe contemporarycitywearerathersearchingforacitythatismore Diverse,Equal,andFair.Thestudiowillalignitselftoongoing researchnetworksthatsearchforsustainableandreal-lifehousing developments.InUppsalawewillengageinthedismantlingofthe WelfareStatehousingproductionandexplorenewwaysofhousing theDEF-City.

Methodology

Thestudiowillcontinuetomapanunderstandingofthehistorical genealogyofmasshousingarchitecturefromamaterial,tectonic, structuralandtechnologicalstandpointsaswellasengageinthe architect’sroleindesigningnewlivingenvironmentsanditseffects onsociety.Withthesustainabilityquestioninfocus,thestudiowill deepentheunderstandingofhowtolimittheeffectsofarchitectural productiononourenvironment.

Thestudioproposesaprocessofdesigningmasshousingasit relatestostructuralandmaterialmethodsintimatelytiedwitha historicalperspectivewhilecriticallyengagingintoday’shousing debates.Wethinkthatdesignthroughknowledgeinmaterialand architecturaltechnologyimplicatestheunderstandingoftectonics andspace.Ourambitionistogivestudentsathoroughknowledgeof theprocessesandmechanicsofhousinginordertoupgradeand improvethearchitects’roleincurrentbuildingproduction.Thestudio willfosteranempatheticattitudeforthecomplementaryrolesofthe architectandengineer.Ourprimarytoolswillbesurveying/cataloging anddrawingsofbothnewandhistoricalprecedentsaspartofour mappingphase.Eachsemesterwillincludeaphaseofidentifyingand researchingexistingexamplesaswellasadesignphaseproposing newmasshousing.Ourteachingmethodologyproactivelyengages withcontemporarypracticesbyextensivelymakinguseoflectures andcasestudies.

MassHousingintheABC-City(andNewTowns)

Wewillmapandanalyzeconceptsandcasestudiesofmasshousing inthepostwarABC-city.WewilllookatbothSwedishand internationalexamplesofbuildingmasshousingtosolvetheconflicting needsanddesiresofhousingforthemasses.Thiswillshapea foundationforourfuturestudiesofguidingprinciplesofmasshousing duringthe20thcentury.Byinterpretinglivingconditionsandstructural systems,wewillconfrontissuesofdwelling,domesticity,culture, tectonicsandconstruction.Animportantaspectinthefirstprojectwill bedocumentationandcommunicationofyourresearchfindings.

Project2

FuturesofpostwarMassHousing(inGottsunda)

WewillstudyGottsunda(Uppsala)indetailandproposeanaddition, intervention,extensionorcomplementaryhousingsolution.Wewill makeuseofthisongoingdevelopmentfortheareaembracing possibilitiesofreusingstructuralsystems.Wewilladapttoaspecific locationwithspecificconditions,yetdesigningwithsystemsbuilding inmindcirculararchitectureinthefuture.Wewillmakeuseofthe knowledgeandresearchinP1toalterandreframetheideaof designingmasshousingimplementingconceptsoftheDEF-City.

ContemporaryMassHousingfortheDEF-City

Thecoursewillcriticallyresearchquestionsofhousingsuchasa commodityinanoverheatedhousingmarket;housingpolicies,and politicsofextraction.Alongsidewiththesecomplicatedissueswewill engageandtrytounderstandcontemporarydesignsforhousingthat aimtosolvehousingforthemasses.Thecoursewillfinalizethework intoanindividualprojectbooklet,whichwillserveasaguideforyour P4project.

Duringthefallsemester,we’lldevelopwaysofsensitivelygathering andassemblingresearchonaseriesofcontestednaturaland infrastructuralsitesalongLuleälv.Theriverrunsthroughseveral naturalreserves,Samigrounds,andisthedestinationofthousands ofmountaintourists.Also,itisoneofSweden’smostexploitedand productivewatersforhydroelectricity.Wewillmakealongervisitto thenorth,studyingthisareaupclosethroughfieldwork,drone filming,LiDARscanningandarchivalstudies.Theoutcomewillbe highlydetailedandmultilayeredrepresentations,indrawingand physicalmodel.

WewillfinishtheyearbylookingcloseratthehistoryofÅrstadal, knownasthefirstslumareaofStockholm,1877.Plotswereletand houseswerebuiltbutsewagewasneverinstalledwhichresultedin typhusamongotherdiseases.Herepeoplewerelivingforalmost 100yearsbeforetheneighborhoodwastotallydemolishedand erasedfromhistory.Howdidthishappenandwhy?Canweimagine lifethereandtellthestorynow?Andifwestartthinkingofmemories andstorytelling,whatwouldamonumentforitbeandlooklike?

Inthisfinalprojectstudentswilldevelopaproposalforhowanew habitatofStockholmcandevelopinaresilientway.Designinga habitatincludesshapingphysicalstructuresandenvironmentsfor humansaswellasotheragentsthataregrownoutofsustainable practicesandcultures.Theworkwillresultinanexhibition.Wesee outcomesthatrevealunexpectedpotentialsranginginscalefromthe territorial,theneighborhood,downtothedetailofahome. processes,constructingnewnarrativesofhowwelivetogether,and theimplicationsoftheseinspatialpractice.
