Gallery Klaus Thymann By Chris Hatherill From the remote peaks of Patagonia to the icy plateaus of Alaska, Klaus Thymann has spent the last six years visiting some of the world’s most spectacular glaciers. In between shoots for the likes of i-D, he is the photographer and driving force behind Project Pressure: a not-for-profit effort to document these disappearing natural wonders. Beyond the beautiful, large-format results, each photograph is carefully paired with compass and GPS data to help form a visual time capsule as climate change increasingly impacts the elevated reaches of our planet. Thymann’s Danish heritage shines through in his combination of explorer spirit with a polished style honed from years of experience photographing for high-end fashion and advertising clients. It is encapsulated in the small Viking that forms his personal logo and

the DIY spirit of this independently funded modern-day adventure. Trekking out to and turning his lens on these distant subjects, he reveals the stark beauty and hidden minutiae of these otherworldly and often inaccessible sites – like the striking red soil that infuses the ice of Ecuador. For each expedition, Thymann and the team work with geologists and scientists to identify which glaciers are most at risk, then single out those that aren’t so well known. A good case in point is Africa’s small and surprising clutch of glaciers, located in the Rwenzori mountains of Uganda and the Congo. Rising surreally above the subtropical flora, these shrinking ice patches may be gone in less than 20 years, according to estimates. www.project-pressure.org
