RESIDENCES IN GREECE
A house is much more than a structure. It is an idea, a concept deeply rooted in human existence. It is the space where individuals coexist with nature, where dreams, memories, and aspirations take shape. Throughout the centuries, the home has evolved from a mere shelter into a place of complex expression, creativity, and connection. Today, more than ever, the single-family house in Greece stands at the center of an exciting journey, blending tradition with modernity. Economic crises, the pandemic, climate change, and rapid technological advances have left their mark on the architectural landscape. The single-family house is no longer just a living space; it is a realm where tranquility, innovation, and sustainability converge.
The book "Contemporary Greek Architecture: Single-Family Houses" is a tribute to this intricate and fascinating relationship. Through its pages, 22 unique projects are showcased, traversing geographic and aesthetic boundaries. From traditional stone houses on the islands to contemporary bioclimatic residences, the book explores the singlefamily home as a dynamic category that unites people, place, and time.
Greek single-family homes are imbued with the identity of their creators and the character of their location. The interplay of stone, wood, and modern materials creates a distinctive blend that provides both functionality and harmony with the surroundings. Tradition meets modern aesthetics as architects seek to harmonize today’s needs with the legacy of the past.
From subterranean residences that integrate seamlessly into the landscape to holiday villas designed to adapt to the natural features of the terrain and urban homes redefining city life, the book highlights a creative and rich tradition that continues to evolve.
The single-family houses featured in this book are more than beautiful buildings. They are living examples of sustainability and technological advancement. Green roofs, energy-saving systems, and the use of natural materials like excavated stone and wood underscore Greek architecture’s commitment to a better, more sustainable future.
Adapting architecture to the landscape is another central theme. The homes showcased incorporate natural ventilation and optimal orientation for maximum energy efficiency. Solar energy systems and water resource management practices reflect a dedication to sustainability that benefits not only the occupants but also the environment. Each house in this book tells a unique story. Beyond aesthetics and functionality, these homes reflect the dreams, needs, and desires of the people who live in them. Architects, in turn, share their own narratives through their descriptions, offering insights into the challenges, ideas, and philosophies behind each project.
The diversity of the projects—from minimalist forms to luxurious holiday villas—provides abundant ideas and inspiration. Whether through the use of natural materials or the integration of "smart" technologies, the book showcases architecture as a bridge between culture, nature, and human creativity.
"Contemporary Greek Architecture: Single-Family Houses" is not just a book; it is a homage to the transformative power of architecture. The 21 featured homes are more than structures; they are sources of inspiration for the present and the future of living spaces.
We hope this publication will serve as a guide for architects, designers, and architecture enthusiasts, reminding them that a home is more than just a shell. It is a living system, a space where people create, live, and connect with their environment.

The staircase is projected onto the concrete element, creating a dynamic sculpture with the play of light.

Inside the house, an enclosed atrium is revealed, a hidden oasis meticulously secluded from the outside world.
The central feature of the atrium is a planted wall, which also extends into the interior of the residence, behind the staircase.

The complex consists of three independent houses, strategically placed on the plot to achieve optimal adaptation to the natural terrain and the best orientation towards the view. Taking into account the principles of vernacular architecture, modern trends, and the local climate, the design aims to simplify forms while preserving the distinctive characteristics of local architecture through a modern perspective. Consequently, the form and volume of each house result from the combination of two basic materials: the raw local stonework (solid) and glass (void/transparency). The final volume emerges from the simplification of an archetypal mountain house into its most fundamental form. The traditional tiled roof is retained as a single-pitched roof, while the eastern side of each residence is opened up to the horizon and view by replacing the entire east wall with a single, large glass curtain wall.
The form and the volume of the residences are derived from the combination of only two basic materials, the exposed local stone masonry and the glass.

The architectural firm Minas Kosmidis Architects was called upon to design the interior of a summer house in Thasos. It is a 150 square meter house that meets the needs of a family of three.
In the existing shell, a stone structure which was preserved, a metal structure was added to support the second level of the house.
The layout of the first level is organized in an open plan, with the staircase and secondary functions positioned at the back, leaving an unobstructed view of the sea from the living area. The kitchen is designed with folding doors, allowing it to be completely hidden as a wooden box.
On the second level, the bedrooms are found, slightly more isolated, but with visual escape provided by the glass partition.
Stone, wooden surfaces, and earthy tones summarize the material palette, aiming to integrate the design with the island's natural environment and enhance the serene aura of the surrounding atmosphere.
