CULTURE OF GENEROSITY

SCH

AND PHILANTHROPY Giving is an integral part of the success of SCH. The extraordinary generosity of our community members makes SCH what it is today: a school with high expectations, strong values, and happy, hardworking students.

Philanthropy connects people to SCH in a deeper way and makes the community stronger.

Our students reflect a generous spirit because the adults in their lives model philanthropic behavior. Simply put, philanthropy connects people to SCH in a deeper way and makes the community stronger. Springside School, Chestnut Hill Academy, and now SCH families have invested in the future of our school for more than 150 years to ensure the very best education for our students. You make this possible.

As a graduate, parent, faculty member, and former board member, I have had the opportunity to see the results of donations to The SCH Fund from almost every perspective. I have been able to see the impact donations have on the programs we deliver to students every day, especially the special or unusual programs that have such a profound impact on the kids. Without the generous support of The SCH Fund, our program simply would not be as diverse and exciting as it is. – Peter G. Randall ‘69, P’16, P’18

TYPES OF GIVING At SCH, charitable donations fall into three categories: gifts that cover operating expenses, gifts that support endowment, and gifts that fund capital improvements. Below are the ways you can support SCH, its students, and its mission through philanthropic giving.

OPERATING GIFTS Charitable gifts are a critical part of the school’s annual operating budget. Each year, approximately 7% of the operating income is generated through donations to the school. These tax-deductible gifts are put to use immediately and have a direct and crucial impact on every student’s experience. The SCH Fund –The SCH Fund, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy’s highest fundraising priority, is SCH’s annual giving program that supports all elements of the student experience such as the arts, athletics, classroom resources, technology, professional development for faculty, scholarships and financial aid, and more. These gifts make the SCH experience a reality and take us from good to great! The SCH Fund raised $1,830,000 in 2015-2016, representing approximately 5% of the school’s annual budget. Last year 60% of the gifts were $100 or less — you can make a difference! Senior Class Gift – The Senior Class Gift is a tradition that allows senior parents the opportunity to celebrate their child’s accomplishments and leave a legacy for future SCH students. A donation to the Senior Class Gift is counted as participation in the current year’s SCH Fund. Tax Credit Program – Through the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) or the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) an approved applicant can receive PA state tax credit(s) by making a contribution to SCH’s scholarship fund. Your EITC/OSTC gift will be counted toward The SCH Fund.

Matching Gifts – Matching gifts are a simple way to increase your support for SCH. Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions or volunteer hours made by their employees. The impact of your gift to SCH may be doubled or possibly tripled! Your matching gift will be counted towards your total contribution to The SCH Fund.

ENDOWED GIFTS Endowed funds play an important role in SCH’s overall development program. The annual income from these funds enriches the educational program and provides benefits for faculty, program initiatives, and tuition assistance for students in need. With gifts of this kind, the principal is invested in the school’s endowment portfolio and the income is restricted to a specific need.

CAPITAL GIFTS Capital gifts help to create the environment, places, and spaces to support and enhance the student experience in education, athletics, the arts, social interaction, and personal growth. These gifts are used to increase or improve permanent assets such as the school’s facilities. These gifts represent an investment in the school’s future. Customarily, a capital gift is more substantial than — and given in addition to — an SCH Fund contribution.

THE SCH FUND FAQS

PARENTS ASSOCIATION Throughout the year, the Parents Association (PA) sponsors community building and fundraising events. Parents and businesses often support these events through charitable donations and tickets. These gifts typically support a specific project as defined by the PA and are counted toward your total contribution to the school but do not count for participation in The SCH Fund. (Depending on the project, these gifts are typically either operating or capital gifts.)

PLANNED GIVING A planned gift is a contribution that is arranged in the present and allocated at a future date and typically made through long-term estate or financial planning. Planned gifts play a critical role in ensuring that SCH will continue to provide superior educational opportunities for future generations of young women and young men. These gifts are designated by the donor and typically support endowment or capital projects.

Why is participation so important? All gifts of every size matter. Your participation sends a strong message about your confidence in our school and the education your children are receiving. Our goal each year is 100% participation for trustees, parents, alumni, and faculty/staff as your commitment speaks volumes to prospective families, foundations, and corporations who gauge their interest in supporting our school on the overall participation rates. Who is asked for gifts? Everyone in the school community is asked: trustees, parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, as well as faculty and staff. Why does SCH ask for a gift to The SCH Fund since I’m already paying tuition? Tuition alone does not cover the actual cost to educate each student. We rely on the generosity of our parents, alumni, faculty/staff, trustees, and the entire SCH community to help us provide a superior education. Will my gift be eligible for tax deduction? Absolutely! Your gift to The SCH Fund is fully taxdeductible in accordance with tax laws.

We are thrilled to support the fantastic teachers who educate our children and the amazing facilities SCH has to offer. Unique programs like the steel drum band, the state-of-the-art squash courts, and the amazing golf team are all made possible by The SCH Fund. We are grateful for all SCH does for our children and happy we can give back. – Graeme and Becky Frazier P’11, P’13, P’22

Tuition revenue represents 80-85% of the school’s annual funding. The remaining 15-20% must come from other philanthropic sources. The SCH endowment, valued at more than $40 million, provides approximately $1.7 million annually to the school’s operating budget, which is equivalent to the funds raised through The SCH Fund.
