roud parents across Kansas and across the country have sent their fledglings from the nest to perch on new branches of the KU family tree. In this edition of Jayhawk Generations, we feature nearly 250 new Jayhawks who have already seen athletic and academic successes at a young age, including several state champions, at least four class valedictorians and more than 20 Kansas Honor Scholars who received recognition from the Alumni Association for ranking in the top 10 percent of high school seniors throughout the state. Eager to spread their wings, these newcomers have big plans to become doctors, educators, movie directors and journalists, among countless other pursuits. Whether they’ve migrated from the East Coast or the Golden State, or they’re homegrown Kansans, parents rest assured— your ’Hawks will always be at home on the Hill.

Jack Campbell will march to a familiar beat on the Hill after graduating from Blue Valley North High School, where he participated in the Marching Mustangs drum line and contributed his musical talents to the symphonic band. Iola High School track star Alisa Miller set the pace for a promising future when she chose to study business at KU. A four-year state track and cross country qualifier and 1,600-meter league champion, Alisa performed equally well in the classroom and on stage with the drama club. Although Clayton Ashley follows three generations of doctors, he believes in the healing powers of music and drama. The Topeka High School graduate played with the marching band, drumline and jazz band four years, and got a glimpse of life on the Hill at the KU Jazz Music Camp in 2004. Clayton also wrote, edited and directed the winner of the Best Short Film at the 2007 Mandala Film Festival. His parents are Thomas, m’84, and Ann Nicholas Ashley, g’83. He follows a paternal KU line that includes his grandfather, B. John Ashley Jr., c’53, m’56, and great-grandfather, Byron J. Ashley, c’22, m’24.

Spencer John Boland has recently returned from a field of dreams after helping his Blue Valley Northwest High School baseball team earn third place at the 6A state tournament this year. His volunteer work has inspired him to pursue pre-med studies at KU. Spencer’s Jayhawk ancestry began with his maternal great-grandmother, Edith Popplewell Dunn, who attended with the Class of 1928. The line continues with his grandfather, Dallas Dunn, b’50, and his mother, Susan Dunn Boland, c’82, of Overland Park.

Hollie Elise Benson had her hands full with a variety of high school activities, but was always willing to lend one to those in need. The Houston native graduated from James E. Taylor High School, where she ran track and cross country and played piano four years. In addition to a long list of volunteer work, Hollie made time each year to bike 180 miles from Houston to Austin for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s annual charity event. She is the daughter of Matthew Benson, c’76, and the granddaughter of Page, l’47, and Neil Legler Benson, c’45. Her great-grandfather was George Benson, l 1906.

Chase Buford comes to the Hill from San Antonio’s Alamo Heights High School, where he played basketball for four years—not surprising, considering he is the son of a former KU assistant men’s basketball coach. Chase also enjoys time on the water and on the green as an avid wake boarder and golfer. Chase is the son of R.C., ’85, and Beth Boozer Buford, d’78; the grandson of Warren, ’66, and Nancy Moore Boozer, d’51; and the great-grandson of William Moore, c’12.

Scholastic standout Whitney Bloom comes to KU with a quartet of honors as a National Merit, Kansas Regent, Kansas Honor and Governor’s Scholar. Her eclectic mix of activities at Buhler High School included band, drama, debate and forensics, cross country and the Key Club. Whitney’s parents are James, j’80, g’83, and Susan Owens Bloom,

Along with his artistic talents as a yearbook photographer and photography editor, Andrew proved his academic talent as a Kansas Honor Scholar and his athletic prowess on the links, lettering in golf four years. Brian Dunmire did his best to stay under par during his four years of golf in high school, but he soared far above his peers in academe. The Olathe East High School graduate will begin his life as a Jayhawk with a KU Freshman Honors Scholarship on top of 32 hours of college credit already accrued. Brian’s KU kin include his father, David Dunmire, c’83, of Overland Park; his grandparents, Fred, b’55, and Catherine Campbell Dunmire, c’55; his great-grandfather, Ray “Stuffy” Dunmire, c’15, and his great-grandparents, John Ross, c’13, m’15, and Laura Harkrader Campbell, c’22. Lauren E. Dunn’s decision to attend KU was music to her parents’ ears. An accomplished pianist and singer, Lauren has taken her melodic talents all the way to Ireland with the award-winning Shawnee Mission East High School Choraliers. Lauren’s artistic aptitude stems from her mother, Pamela Elliott Pendergast, f’74, as well as her great-grandmother, Edith Mildred Popplewell Dunn, ’28, a talented soprano singer. Her paternal KU line also includes her father, William Dunn, c’73, and his parents, William Jr., ’50, and Elizabeth Spratt Dunn, c’49.

Iowa native Jessica Lynn Christ might be hours from Mount Oread, but she’s close to her Rock Chalk roots. Jessica follows three generations of KU men, including her father, David Christ, c’76, m’79; grandfather, Vincent Christ, c’44, m’46; and great-grandfather, Aloysius Christ, ’15. The Spencer High School graduate comes prepared for college life after achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA and going to state competitions in both volleyball and track. After participating in choir and show choir throughout her high school years, Jessica will be a great addition to the student section in Allen Field House, where she’ll carry a KU tune.

Although Samuel Findlay was a varsity football captain at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, he found time off the gridiron to help others through involvement with Cougars Committed to the Community. Complementing his interest in radio and television, Sam plans to pursue film studies at KU. His parents are James, ’87, and Kay Roberts Findlay, h’81, of Shawnee. Sam’s maternal Jayhawk lineage includes his grandparents, Don, d’50, and Jean Proudfit Roberts, ’53; and great-grandfather, Clay Roberts, e’13.

Madison Moore Clay is sure to make a graceful transition from Shawnee Mission West High School to life at KU. She danced her way through high school on the dance team four years and as an instructor for girls across the country. After receiving honors from the National Dance Alliance, Madison will make the move from leotard to business suit with plans to study business administration. Her KU ancestry includes her parents, M. Scott, c’79, and Wendy Francis Clay, ’78, of Lenexa; maternal grandparents, George, ’50, and Carol Buhler Francis, j’50, g’71; and greatgrandfather, David Buhler, m1904.

Sara Aurin Finney dreams of the silver screen. A graduate of Washburn Rural High School, she is the recipient of the Patricia Joyce Ellis Scholarship and the Topeka Performing Arts Center’s Young Artist of the Year Award for Technical Theatre. Sara plans to pursue a theatre and film degree from KU in hopes of becoming a movie director. Her sister,

Anna Finney, welcomes her to the Hill. They follow a slew of engineering graduates, including their father, Keith Finney, e’73; grandfather, Richard Finney, e’48; and great-grandfather, Roy Finney, e’13, all of whom carried on another family tradition—the firm of Finney and Turnipseed, which has provided structural engineering services to KU for more than 85 years.

Gage, c’81, g’01. Travis’s paternal lineage includes grandparents, John, l’52, and Eleanor Peck Gage, c’47, and great-grandparents, John Bailey Gage, 1907, former Kansas City mayor, and Marjorie Hires Gage, ’17. Travis is a Lawrence High School graduate and a letterwinner in both track and football. He’ll be welcomed to the Hill just as he welcomed new students to his high school as a member of the LINK team.

Erin Deborah Fletcher has been practicing her pirouette and is ready for life as a Jayhawk. In addition to her volunteer work, Erin has studied ballet, performing in productions and camps, for nearly a decade. The Shawnee Mission East High School graduate is the daughter of Robert, c’74, and Carolyn Fee Fletcher, h’80, of Leawood. Erin’s maternal grandparents include Chester, c’51, g’52, m’56, and Ardyce Pearson Fee, n’54, and her great-grandfather was Charles Fee, c’17.

Kristin Kirk, a 10year veteran of equestrian competition, graduated from St. Teresa’s Academy. The Fairway resident also excels in art history and fine arts, as evidenced by her scholastic awards for drawing and apparel/design. In addition, she participated in drama and community service clubs. Her parents are Michael, c’69, and Julia Turtle Kirk, c’69. The legacy continues through her maternal family with her grandfather, Howard Turtle, c’34, and great-grandparents, Richard and Martha West Turtle, who attended KU with the classes of 1912 and 1911.

Lane Frizell comes to the Hill with a true appreciation for the KU community. Not only did she letter in both volleyball and basketball at Bishop Seabury Academy in Lawrence, but she also gave her time to community service organizations like the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity. Lane joins her sister, Laura Frizell, at KU. Their parents are Edward “Trip” III, b’76, l’80, g’80, and Allison Miller Frizell, n’81. Lane’s paternal grandparents include Edward “Bud” II, ’51, and Barbara Varner Frizell, c’47, and her great-grandfather was Ralph Varner, ’11. Her maternal Jayhawk line includes her grandparents, Pleasant Jr., c’47, and Alice Shankland Miller, ’47, and her great-grandparents, James, g’35, and Cloris Swartz Shankland, c’29.

Brent Lemieux didn’t wrestle with a fear of making a college choice. He simply followed his enduring KU legacy after graduating from Blue Valley West High School, where he grappled for four years and ran cross country for two. Steven, c’82, and Cheri Hayman Lemieux, n’84, of Overland Park, are his parents. Brent’s maternal grandparents are Clarence Jr., c’57, and Lavon Brown Hayman, ’56. His KU lineage began with his great-grandparents, Francis Henry Brown, ’24, and Myrtle Webber Brown, p’24. John Culver McGuire made a splash at Shawnee Mission East High School, where he helped his school’s swim team earn the gold medal three of four years at the state tournament. The Case, Johnny also played golf and volunteered for community service projects. He joins his sister, Maggie, at KU. Their maternal Jayhawk line includes their mother, Nancy Alberg McGuire, d’81, and her mother, Joan Culver Alberg, ’53. Johnny’s father is Charles McGuire, j’76; his paternal grandparents are Thomas, c’53, m’56, and Geraldine Hesse McGuire Vaughan, c’53; and his two great-grandfathers were Clarence McGuire, c’28, and Charles Hesse, c’23.

Award and the Golden ‘K’ Award for academics this year, and hustled through high school with an impressive twominute 800-meter run. He follows in the footsteps of two sisters, Amy Mueller Knutzen, d’04, and Megan Mueller, d’07. They are the children of Michael and Monica Michener Mueller, h’79. KU grandparents are William Michener Jr., b’54, and the late Jane Henry Michener, n’55. Luke’s greatgrandparents included William Michener, m’10, and Ailee Decker Henry, ’26. Megan Murray already has made a name for herself at KU after graduating magna cum laude from Wichita Collegiate School. She has been admitted to the KU Honors Program, named a Watkins-Berger Scholar and received a Koch Foundation Scholarship. Along with her academic accomplishments, Megan lettered in volleyball throughout high school, and put her spirited attitude to use in the band and pep band. Her KU line extends from her father, Daniel Murray, b’80, g’81, to her grandparents, Max, b’54, and Carol Stockham Murray, c’57, and finally to her great-grandfather, Kansas Supreme Court Justice John Fontron, l’26.

Andrew Meyer follows a KU clan that dates back to his paternal great-grandfather, Gustoph Rau Jr., e’25. Gus’s daughter, Jappy Rau Meyer, c’52, had a son, Dan Meyer, who went on to earn architecture and engineering degrees from KU in 1983. Dan’s son, Andrew, comes to KU this fall as a fourth-generation Jayhawk, ready to enjoy life on the Hill after graduating from Shawnee Mission East High School. Andy participated in school and church organizations and earned the coveted rank of Eagle Scout. Emily Jane Moseley has the brains and the balance to prosper on the Hill. A competitive dancer for 12 years, Emily graduated from Lawrence High School with a flock of honors, including the Lawrence Breakfast Optimist Academic Scholarship, and recognition as a Kansas Honor Scholar and Freshman Honors Scholar. Emily was also involved in the Pom Squad and Student Council. She follows three generations of KU women, including her mother, Jane Ogden Moseley, j’79; grandmother, Joyce Bigham Ogden, c’55; and great-grandmother, Susan Brown Bigham, c’26.

Colby Nelson earned the title of Eastern Kansas League Scholar Athlete as a discus thrower for Blue Valley Northwest High School. He plans to study pre-law at KU. He and his brother, Chris, follow their parents, Jeffrey, b’77, l’80, and Lisa Snook Nelson, c’82, of Overland Park. Their paternal grandparents are Stanley, c’50, l’50, and Rosemary Gaines Nelson, c’49. Stanley is the son of Carl Nelson, a longtime professor and chair of biochemistry, and Hearty Brown Nelson, who taught English at KU during the World War I era. Colby’s maternal grandfather is William Snook Jr., e’50, son-in-law of Ray Gfeller, ’31.

Courtney Newell served up a dose of KU pride when she decided to become

the next Jayhawk in her family. She was a four-year varsity tennis player and two-year varsity track team member at Shawnee Mission East High School, where she also qualified for a DECA international competition. Courtney’s father is Charles Newell, b’78, and her paternal grandfather is Paul Newell, ’42. Her KU line extends further back on her maternal side, which includes her mother, Elizabeth Newton Newell, b’80; grandparents, George, c’51, and Nancy Seaman Newton, c’52; and great-grandmother, Nelle Thomason Watkins, ’26.

Timothy Otte, j’86. Her mother is Lucy Herlocker Freeman, c’83, l’86, daughter of Thomas, c’60, l’63, and Judith Gildehaus Herlocker, d’61. Abby’s great-grandfather was John Herlocker, l’36. Littleton High School grad Lee Woodruff Panter takes a step down in elevation from the Mile High City to Mount Oread, but a big step up to make his family a fourth-generation KU clan. Lee was involved in a little bit of everything in Colorado, including speech and debate, scuba diving, skiing, lacrosse and roller hockey. An intended math major at KU, Lee has a maternal line that extends from his mother, Nancy Reber Panter, c’77, to her parents, John Alfred II, d’49, and Eleanor McHarg Reber, b’49, and back to where it all started with Lee’s great-grandparents, John Alfred, c’16, and Charlotte Martin Reber, c’17.

Lindsey Kay Nichols has an eye for design. While at Shawnee Mission West High School, she earned several awards for her work on the yearbook staff. The Lenexa native also participated in soccer. Her parents are Gregory, c’86, and Jill Ostenberg Nichols, j’85. Lindsey’s paternal grandfather is Miles Nichols, c’58, and on her maternal side are her grandparents, John, ’62, and Diane Coen Ostenberg, c’62, and great-grandfather, Wilbur Coen Jr., c’33.

Elizabeth Raynolds is one generous Jayhawk. At Shawnee Mission East High School her activities included singing in the choir, keeping up her good grades and devoting more than 150 hours of her time to local schools, Habitat for Humanity, retirement centers and her church. Liz is a KU Freshman Honors Scholar and a member of the KU Mount Oread Scholars Program. Her parents are Christopher, c’80, l’84, and Abigail Morris Raynolds, n’82, of Prairie Village. Her Jayhawk heritage continues on her father’s side with her grandparents, Richard, b’56, and Mary Dougherty Raynolds, n’57, and great-grandfather, Leroy Raynolds, c’26, l’31.

Scott Ollila is the 16th member of his extended family to attend KU, and if his high school activities are any indication, he will be an exciting, eclectic addition to the flock. The Lawrence High School graduate filled his time with football, track, marching and concert band, choir, Young Republicans and earning his way to Eagle Scout status. He gets his crimson and blue roots from his mom’s side of the family, which includes his mother, Lynn Harrison Ollila, ’83; grandparents, Sidney, a’61, and Raydell Hodson Harrison, ’59; and greatgrandfather, Claude Harrison, b’33.

Rebecca Sheldon-Sherman comes to KU straight from the top. The Kansas Honor Scholar graduated as valedictorian of her class at Lawrence Free State High School, where she also was involved in tennis, cheerleading, the Outdoors Club, Key Club, piano and dance. Michael Tetwiler was a model student at Paola High School. The Kansas Honor Scholar was involved in the Model United Nations, Rat Pack Pep Club, Drama Club and Welding Club. Bradley Stuckey’s crimson and blue roots began in the early 20th century, when his great-grandfather, George Stuckey, c’12, led the Jayhawks as captain of the basketball team and lettered on the KU track team. Bradley graduated summa cum laude from the Cypress-Fairbanks High School, where he followed family tradition and played varsity basketball. Adam Lawrence Engel’s deep KU roots drew him to the Hill after he graduated from Lake Highlands High School in Dallas and attended Oklahoma State University for one year. Riley King, a California girl, is right at home in Jayhawk country. She graduated from Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek, Calif. Bryan Patrick Nelson is a hardwood hero from Shawnee Mission East High School. His basketball achievements include the Sunflower League Player of the Year and first team all-metro and all-state honors. Bryan also was a pep club member. Kelly Ann Schwartz, destined to be a Jayhawk, attended her first KU basketball game at 4 months of age. A graduate of Hayden High School, she worked on the yearbook staff and student council. Fritz Baringer Waldorf is an East Kansas League Scholar Athlete from Blue Valley North High School, where he lettered in football four years. Fritz follows two Jayhawk siblings, his brother, Tyler, e’06, and his sister, Paige, a senior on the Hill. Their mother is Debra Baringer Waldorf, d’75, of Leawood. On his paternal side are his father, James Waldorf, c’74, m’77, and his grandfather, Melvin Waldorf Jr., m’47.

Todd Witt brings his work ethic to the Hill from Shawnee Mission East High School. While working nearly full time throughout high school, Todd remained an avid KU basketball fan. Also in the KU family are his sister, Suzanne Witt, ’06, and his brothers, Trey, d’07, and Taylor, a junior. They are the children of C.E., c’81, and Jody Muir Witt, d’81. Joseph Watson earned first-team honors at Brookfield East High School in Wisconsin. He played varsity soccer for three years and was named a top player both athletically and academically in the greatermetro Milwaukee conference. He also was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America. Joseph’s parents are David, b’84, and Shelly Stucky Watson, j’85, and his paternal grandparents are Donald, ’56, and Joan Buchman Watson, g’86.

David Zimmerman was an accomplished athlete at Greenhill School in Dallas. He was football captain his senior year, and earned letters in varsity soccer, lacrosse and track. David plans to study mechanical engineering at KU. He has a Jayhawk heritage that includes his mother, Margaret Smith Zimmerman, h’82, and his grandparents, George Jr., e’54, and Catherine Newman Smith, d’54.
