For many students in KU’s 144th freshman class, these are familiar settings for stories wistfully told throughout their childhood, as generations of loyal alumni taught the Rock Chalk Chant along with the ABCs and passed on a legacy of love for the Hill. This year’s Jayhawk Generations features 250 freshmen who have followed in their family’s footsteps to Mount Oread. These students boast remarkable success in academics, athletics, music, theatre and community service. Many of the Kansans graduated high school in the top 10 percent of their class and received recognition as Kansas Honor Scholars. Kim Perry of the Alumni Association, with help from the Office of Admissions and Scholarships, traced lineages through generations of ’Hawks who have lived, cheered and studied on the Hill. As the newest flock begins its own KU story, we remain convinced that crimson and blue family ties are among the strongest.

JJ Donohue hails from Benet Academy College Preparatory High School in Lisle, Ill. JJ was involved in tennis and helped the school’s team finish first in its conference. He also was a member of the law club and volunteered at St. John of the Cross. He is the son of Gerald Donohue Jr., b’81, and his grandmother is Kenya Torrance Donohue, d’57. JJ’s paternal great-grandparents are Frank, 1915, and Virginia Wilber Torrance Bolin, ’31, and his paternal great-great-grandfather is James Torrance, l1900.

Before becoming a true blue ’Hawk, Amanda Shaw ran cross country and worked on the yearbook at Blue Valley North, and volunteered with Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church. Amanda will join her sister, Allyson, a junior, at KU. Their maternal heritage includes mother Stacy Fee Shaw, b’80; grandparents James, c’54, and Martha Johnson Fee, c’55; greatgrandparents Oliver Kepler Johnson, e’26, and Josephine Allen Johnson, c’28; and great-great grandfather Otis Allen, 1896.

Fourth Generation Jayhawk heritage for Chad Allen runs deep, with roots to his greatgrandfather, coach Forrest “Phog” Allen, who attended with the Class of 1909. A graduate of Shawnee Mission East High School, he won two state titles as a member of the swim team. Out of the pool, Chad performed with various choral ensembles, including the elite Chamber Singers. He is the grandson of Robert, c’41, m’45, and Jean McFarland Allen, ’42. Chad’s parents are Mark, c’75, m’78, and Louise Willing Allen, c’75, d’76.

As a member of the Pembroke Hill High School lacrosse team, Will Bolen was named to Missouri’s allstate team, and helped lead his teammates to win a state championship last spring. He also played basketball and football, and was captain of the swim team. He is the son of Dan, c’81, and Ellen Stolzer Bolen, b’80, and the grandson of Patrick, b’58, and Linda Bolen, assoc. Will’s greatgrandfather is Daniel A. Bolen, ’26. Two generations of businessmen lead the way for Sam Conklin. Sam stayed involved at Hutchinson High School and was a member of student council, and the Key, ultimate Frisbee, dodgeball and badminton clubs. Sam also received honors in swimming and qualified for the state meet each year. He is the son of Stuart III, b’78, and Sharon Pavel Conklin, b’79. Sam’s grandparents are Stuart Jr., b’54, and Mary Ann Kaaz Conklin, b’55. His great-grandmother is Alma Kloepper Kaaz, c’28. Sam’s siblings are Kristin Conklin Schroeder, b’07, and Stuart “Bud” Conklin, b’09.

Lawrence native Daniel Aul found a musical niche at Free State High School, where he played in the marching band’s drum line and jam band. He also prepared himself for the hike up Mount Oread as a member of the cross country team. Daniel’s paternal great-grandmother is Mae Rossman Aul, c1912, and paternal grandparents are Dan, b’41, l’47, and Dolores Grossenbacher Aul, c’44. Daniel is the son of Ronald, b’84, g’86, and Lisa Fankhauser Aul, b’86. His maternal grandfather is Jay Fankhauser, e’58. He joins his freshman cousin, Kathryn Fankhauser, on the Hill this fall.

Henry Couzens attended Salisbury School in Salisbury, Conn., where he played varsity football and lacrosse. He also earned academic distinction in economics and the Merit Award for citizenship. He is a descendant of Fred Anschutz, ’33, and his grandparents are Porter Rodgers, m’61, and Sue Anschutz Rodgers, d’55. His mother is Melinda Rodgers Couzens, c’83. Henry is the brother of Jack, a senior at KU.

Lauren Bandle kept perfect time while participating in marching band and choir at Free State High School. She was a member of National Honor Society, received the Girl Scout Gold Award, and volunteered to help flood victims in New Orleans and Iowa. Lauren’s maternal great-grandparents, John, ’51, and Marcella Briery, assoc., were the first generation of Jayhawks in the family. Her grandparents, William, assoc., and Sharon Briery Reynolds, ’70, carried on the tradition. Lauren is the daughter of Jeffrey, c’86, and Christina Reynolds Bandle, ’89.

Jack Faerber’s leadership skills helped lead Kansas City’s Rockhurst High School lacrosse team to a secondplace finish in the state championship last May. He was varsity team captain and is an Eagle Scout. Jack spent time 4

volunteering for the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired and the Upper Room. He is the son of John, j’78, and Katherine Nettels Faerber, f’83, and his paternal grandparents are Jack, c’51, and Ann Bonecutter Faerber, f’53. On his mother’s side, Jack follows grandparents George Jr., e’50, and Mary Myers Nettels, ’50. His maternal great-grandparents are George, e’21, and Mathilde Nettels, assoc.

Earnest Friesen, 1920; and the grandson of Will Friesen, b’49. His maternal greatgrandfather is Paul Borel, e’34, and his grandparents John, c’62, m’66, and Nancy Borel Ellis, d’63. Mastering KU’s alma mater won’t be a problem for accomplished tubist Trey Kapfer. He serenaded his way through music classes at Blue Valley West High School, and was first chair of Kansas Music Educators Association’s all-state band. Trey also played with the United States Navy Band and Kansas City Youth Symphony. Trey is the son of Mark, d’75, g’97, and Linda Bybee-Kapfer, d’77, g’94. He is the grandson of John, e’49, and Johanne Vaughn Kapfer, d’62, g’71, and the greatgrandson of Thornton Vaughn, c’30.

As a veteran cheerleader for Washburn Rural High School in Topeka, Kathryn Fankhauser will have no problem chanting Rock Chalk during her time at KU. The Kansas Honor Scholar also was president of National Honor Society, and participated in French club, track and helped put together the yearbook. She follows in the footsteps of her sister, Jessica, j’08. They are the daughters of Gregory Fankhauser, b’78, and Sally McDonald Fankhauser, d’80. Kathryn’s paternal grandfather is Jay Fankhauser, d’58, and her maternal grandparents are Charles, b’56, and Charlene McCoy McDonald, ’57. Kathryn’s maternal great-grandparents, Wayne, c’28, and Loraine Mace McCoy, ’31, started the family’s crimson and blue tradition. Kathryn joins her freshman cousin, Daniel Aul, on the Hill this fall.

Finding his way through the wilderness was one of Tommy Keenan’s many adventures at Rockhurst High School. The Eagle Scout also played baseball, football and lacrosse, was student body vice president and a member of National Honor Society. Tommy is the great-grandson of Jacob Goering, ’28, and the grandson of Larry, c’52, l’54, and Ramona Goering Keenan, d’52. His parents are Matthew, c’81, l’84, and Lori Hickman Keenan, f’83.

Before making the move to Mount Oread this fall, Grace Findlay combined her athletic and leadership skills to coach youngsters at volleyball camps in Shawnee Mission. A graduate of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, she played varsity softball and volleyball, and also was involved in video journalism, student council and worked on the prom and graduation committees. She joins her brother, Sam, a junior, on the Hill. They are the children of James, ’87, and Kay Roberts Findlay, a’81. On their mother’s side, KU lineage extends to grandparents Don, d’50, and Jean Proudfit Roberts, ’53, and great-grandfather Clay Roberts, e1913.

Meghan Linville’s backhand helped Notre Dame de Sion’s varsity tennis team gather two consecutive titles. When she wasn’t serving aces, Meghan volunteered in the community around Mission Hills, at Operation Breakthrough, Wayside Waifs, Brighton Gardens Senior Living and St. James Food Kitchen. Meghan follows in the footsteps of her brother, Phillip, b’09. They are the children of Richard Linville, j’80, g’82, and the grandchildren of Aubrey, b’52, l’63, and Nancy Meyer Linville, c’52. Aubrey’s parents were Eugene, l’33, and Christie Angell Linville, ’26. Nancy’s father was Maurice Myer, d’31.

Accomplished golfer Mitchell Friesen helped the O’Neal School’s varsity team win two North Carolina state championships. He also participated in Younglife, Wyldlife and National Honor Society. The Pinehurst, N.C., native is the son of Robert, c’85, l’90, and Anne Ellis Friesen, d’85, g’87. On his father’s side, Mitchell is the great-grandson of

Keeping up his family’s Jayhawk tradition, Ryan Middleton made the jump from Prairie Village to Lawrence. The Eagle Scout graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School, where he was involved in track and cross country. He also volunteered with Village Presbyterian Church and traveled on mission trips to the Dominican Republic. He is the son of Lisbeth Hotchkiss Middleton, f’79, and the grandson of James, b’49, and Ann Cuthbertson Hotchkiss, d’52. Ryan’s maternal great-grandmother, Thelma Ellington Cuthbertson, ’25, was the first in the family to climb Mount Oread.

The Lawrence Free State High School marching band named Will Marsh outstanding sousaphone player. He also was a member of the state honors band and the district honors band, and Will’s volunteer experience includes refurbishing houses and serving in soup kitchens in Biloxi, Miss. He is the son of Charles Marsh Jr., c’77, g’79, PhD’85, and the grandson of Charles, ’49, and Ivy Marsh, ’50. His maternal greatgrandfather was Claude Flora, ’22.

Pliés and pirouettes are among Kate Morris’ talents. She danced at Olathe North as a member of the Eaglette Drill Team and also was active in youth congress. She is the daughter of Ronald Morris, assoc., and Natalie Ellis Morris, d’83. Her maternal grandparents are Donald Ellis, b’53, and Joyce Cazier, d’54. Katie’s paternal grandfather is Robert Morris, EdD’66. On her mother’s side, Katie’s great-grandparents are Lawrence Cazier, m’20, and Donald, ’26, and Mary Ainsworth Ellis, ’26.

Paige McClure left Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Mo., with notable journalistic awards. She won first place in Journalism Educators of Metropolitan Kansas City’s yearbook clubs section writing last spring and an honorable mention in Journalism Education Association’s national write-off competition. She volunteered in Kansas City at Clardy Elementary and Harvester’s Food Pantry. Paige’s paternal great-grandfather, Lloyd McClure, 1923, was the inaugural KU student in her family. Her paternal grandparents are Lloyd Jr., c’49, g’52, and Joan McClure, assoc. Paige is the daughter of Scott, j’80, and Carolyn Kobolt McClure, j’81.

Sarah Noonan will join her fellow classmates as a member of KU’s track team. Before she laced up her Jayhawk cleats, the graduate of Kirkwood High School near St. Louis, Mo., gained 11 state medals, played basketball and also was a member of the orchestra. Sarah’s great-grandparents on her mother’s side are Charles, m’32, and Nellie Underwood, assoc. Grandparents, Lynn, c’59, m’63, and Ann Underwood Kindred, c’59, carried on the Jayhawk tradition. Sarah is the daughter of Kathryn Kindred Noonan, c’82. Lexy Otte stayed busy at Winfield High School. She was on the yearbook editing staff, a member of National Honor Society, the foreign cultures club and spirit squad, and also played basketball. Her brother, Ian Otte, is enrolled in the School of Law, and her sisters, Abby and Rebekah Freeman, also attend KU. Lexy’s parents are Lucy Herlocker Freeman, c’83, l’86, and Tim Otte, j’86, and her grandparents are Thomas, c’60, l’63, and Judith Gildenhaus Herlocker, d’61. Lexy’s greatgrandfather is John Herlocker, l’36.

A student well versed in computer software, Marc McCort helped develop a database for the botany department at Olathe South High School. Marc also played basketball his freshman year. His sister is Maren McCort, c’03, and their parents are William, e’74, and Ann Rossman McCort, d’77. On his mother’s side, Marc’s KU relatives are grandparents Richard, c’53, and Betty Crawford Rossman, d’52. His 6

A man of many talents, Benjamin Searcy played varsity golf at All Saints’ Episcopal School, was a member of the Bible club, the drumline and whiz quiz team. In his spare time, he traveled around the country and Mexico for mission trips with First United Methodist Church. Benjamin is the son of William, c’76, and Carol Walker Searcy, c’76, of Fort Worth, Texas. His paternal grandfather is Bill Searcy, ’50, and his maternal grandparents are William, e’48, and Elaine Walker, d’47. Benjamin’s maternal great-grandparents, Herman, e1911, and Carrie Calhoun Walker, 1912, started the KU family tree.

Equestrian Kaitlyn Perry established herself in the saddle at New Legacy Farm near Topeka. She was involved with the United States Equestrian Federation and United States Hunter Jumper Association. At Washburn Rural High School, Kaitlyn participated in forensics and different community service organizations, including Blues Buddies, a tutoring program for elementary school students. Kaitlyn is the daughter of Robert, c’76, and Donna Perry, assoc., and the granddaughter of Colonel Howard, ’49, and Bobette Sellers Perry, c’46. Kaitlyn’s great-grandparents, Robert, c1913, and Iris Russel Sellers, c’20, started the crimson and blue family tree. Paul Pistorius will fit right into his family of scientists. He graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School, where he spent four years studying pre-engineering and computer aided design. Paul is the maternal great-grandson of former chemistry department chair Ray Brewster, g’15. He is the son of Sara Grier, c’77, and Tom Pistorius. His grandparents include Paul, p’55, and Nita Brewster Grier, c’51, and John Pistorius, p’50. Paul’s maternal great-grandfather, Raymond Brewster, g’15, was a former chair of the chemistry department, and his paternal grandfather, Grant Pistorius, g’28, taught physics at KU in the 1950s. Paul joins his sister, Leah, on the Hill.

At Andover Central High School, Braden Smith proved himself on the soccer field and received three varsity letters. Braden’s KU predecessors started with his great-grandfather, Paul Smith, l’24. His grandparents are Stanford, c’55, l’57, and Joan Bennett Smith, d’55, and Braden’s father is Stanford Smith Jr., c’79, l’82. Prairie Village freshman Coleman Stewart played soccer and lacrosse at Pembroke Hill High School in Kansas City, Mo. He also helped the lacrosse team cinch a state championship. Coleman is the son of Deric, c’84, and Mindy Backstrom Stewart, b’87. On his father’s side, Coleman has KU grandparents John III, b’58, and Linda Bliss Stewart, ’60, and great-grandfather John Stewart II, c1911. Coleman’s maternal great-grandmother, Geraldine Brown Backstrom, also holds a KU degree.

Creativity flowed through Chloe Porter’s veins at Lawrence Free State High School. She was a finalist in last year’s Congressional Student Art Contest, and away from the easel, Chloe ran varsity track. Chloe is the daughter of Taylor Porter, c’82, m’87, and Patricia Hardrick, ’83. She is the granddaughter of Garry, c’57, and Nan Morgan Porter, ’58, and the greatgranddaughter of Lindsey George Morgan, c’27. Chloe’s step-grandmother, Patranella Porter, h’82, also graduated from KU.

Taylor Stuckey will feel right at home in Allen Field House after an impressive high school basketball career, including all-district honors, at Cypress Woods High School in Cypress, Texas. Off the hardwood, he was a member of National Honor Society, Young Life and Key Club. He follows his brother, Brad, a junior, to Mount Oread. They are the sons of Sam Stuckey, e’82, and the grandsons of Frank, ’47, and Norma Anderson Stuckey, ’45. Taylor is the great-grandson of George Stuckey, 1912.

Becca Salome graduated from Wichita Southeast High School, where she was a member of Quill and Scroll and FCCLA. She also played volleyball and worked as a photographer for the yearbook. Becca joins her brother, Taylor, a sophomore at KU. She is the daughter of Scott, ’83, and Karen Dwyer Salome, c’84. Becca’s paternal grandparents are William III, ’51, and Ann Galloway Salome, c’52. Her paternal greatgrandfather is William Salome Jr., ’21. 7

Michael is the son of Brad, c’76, m’79, and Sandra Sullivan, assoc., and the grandson of Henry Sullivan Jr., c’49, m’52. Mike’s paternal great-grandparents are Henry Sullivan, c’18, and Helen Wedd Sullivan, c’18.

Mike Sullivan ran for the Shawnee Mission East High School varsity track and cross country teams. When he wasn’t wearing cleats, he helped build community housing with his church’s summer service trips, and also volunteered

Third Generation runner-up finish in the 2007 state championship. When the Shawnee duo wasn’t playing volleyball or varsity basketball, the two volunteered with the National Kidney Foundation and helped out at summer camps held at their school. They are the granddaughters of Richard Blowey, b’56, and the daughters of Douglas, c’83, m’87, and Susan Elizabeth Blowey, c’84.

Kelsey Allen is ready to make waves in college after helping Wichita Trinity Academy win a state swimming title in 2007. She anchored the state champion and All-America medley relay team. Kelsey also played varsity basketball, sang in concert choir and madrigals and was a member of National Honor Society. She is the sister of Michael Allen, a junior at KU. Their parents are Steven, c’82, m’86, and Anne Wells Allen, c’84. Kelsey’s maternal grandmother is Marilyn Priboth Wells, d’57. She joins her fellow freshman cousin, Tyler Wells, on the Hill this fall.

Nicole Brown honed her leadership skills as class president at Marysville High School. In addition to playing tennis and basketball, she found time to serve as band president and section leader of the drumline. Nicole also helped out children in her community with Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Bigs in Schools program. Nicole has two sisters who graduated from KU—Jessica Brown Powell, n’05, g’09, and Laura Blair Brewster, c’03. Their father is Randall Brown, c’77, m’81, and their grandparents are Kenneth, ’60, and LaVetra Evans Brown, ’60.

Life in front of the camera was second nature to Holden Beier-Green at Topeka High School. He earned Kansas Association of Broadcasters’ Best Sportscast award twice. Holden also played golf and was a High Honors graduate. He is the son of Carol Beier, j’81, l’85, and the grandson of Thomas Beier, ’73.

Lexie Clark travels straight from the saddle to the Hill. An avid equestrian, she was vice president of the equestrian club at Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins, Colo. She also was a member of the varsity cheerleading and field hockey teams and worked on student council and Model United Nations. She is the daughter of Connie Lungstrum, f’84, and the granddaughter of Jack, c’48, m’59, and Helen Watson Lungstrum, c’43.

Kristi Cochran served aces growing up near the Alamo. She was team captain in the United States Tennis Association junior league in 2008-’09. During her time at John Marshall High School in San Antonio, Kristi also helped out with Meals on Wheels and at the Roy Maas Youth Alternative Home. She is granddaughter of Norman Cochran, b’47, and the daughter of Steven Cochran, c’70, l’73. Kristi follows her sister, Kelli Cochran Fitzpatrick, c’99, g’00, and brother, Matthew Cochran, j’02, to the Hill.

Forensics buff Joshua Freeman participated in speech and debate at Roland High School in Muldrow, Okla. He also helped out on the agriculture survey team. He is the son of Kristie Gast, m’90, and the grandson of Joseph Gast, e’50, g’65.

Bilingual freshman Shannon Collins joins her fellow classmates after acting as treasurer of the French Honor Society at South County Secondary School in Lorton, Va. She also served aces as captain of the varsity volleyball team for two years and participated at Virginia Girls State in 2009. Shannon follows her mother, Jamie Wilson Collins, b’84, and grandmother, Lee Ann Thompson Wilson, c’54, to KU.

Eric McGowan will be ready for KU’s hilly landscape after running track and cross country at Shawnee Mission West High School. Hawkeye state native Kelsey Puckett contributed to many organizations at Urbandale High School in Urbandale, Iowa. She was a member of the show choir, Future Business Leaders of America, yearbook staff, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and also played soccer. Jack Shoup was a leader on the soccer field and in the classroom at Salina Central High School. This Kansas Honor Scholar and member of National Honor Society gained all-state soccer honors for two consecutive years. Molly Row strutted across various stages before graduating from Shawnee Mission North High School. The Merriam native stayed involved in her school’s theatre program, was a member of Advanced Repertory Theater and danced competitively at a local studio. He worked part time for a local catering firm and directed the infant-toddler nursery at his church. While leading Shawnee Mission East’s cross country team, Brian Simpson saved plenty of time to help out in his community. He was chairman of Pack of PALS, an organization that provides special needs students with mentoring and social events. Brian is the son of John W. Simpson, c’82, l’85, and the grandson of John M. Phoenix Trees displayed artistic intelligence at Blue Valley West High School. The Olathe native was a member of the National Art Honor Society and received the West Works Merit Award for photography, textiles and fibers.
