NORREBRO SCREEN GALLERY

The ground plane was inspired by a nearby skatepark. The subtle variations of height provide opportunities for seating.

URBAN SOLUTIONS: Located in a multicultural neighborhood in Copenhagen, the SCREEN GALLERY is designed to complete the visual pattern of the street, and blend in contextually though the use of industrial materials. Art is displayed in three distinct environments varying in light, enclosure and transparency. The simple layout allows for a small footprint and a fusion between interior ground plane and exterior plaza. The program also consists of a cafe, bookstore and offices.

FLUID DYNAMICS TASK: Using mapping techniques to communicate a chosen motion (drinking water from a stream) through three dimensional digital and physical model representations resulting in a final construct in the form of a full scale installation piece.

Points were photographed and mapped from 4 angles to generate a three dimensional composite map.

PHASE 1 MODELS:

PHASE 2 MODELS: Similar mapping techniques were translated to phase 2 where circulation patterns generated the form of the final installation located in a stairway of Marvin Hall. The construct would act as a light modulator and influence different movement patterns by creating points of visual interest.

KU INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CENTER

PROJECT: The University of Kansas International Student Center is located on the KU campus between the dormitories and the Stouffer Flint Residences. The site presented the challenge of how to exist in this interstitial zone of living quarters and remain an active part of campus life. The solution was to ‘dislocate’ the program in to separate masses in order to activate the courtyard space that existed on a popular footpath to campus. The use of native prairie grasses in the landscape design enhanced the unique Kansas experience for exchange students studying at the University.

KANSAS CITY FILM ACADEMY

The design of this project was a response to providing for the institutional needs of a film academy, while welcoming public traffic and being an integral part of the urban landscape. Situated in the in vibrant Crossroads Art District of Kansas City, the site is near many art galleries and can serve as a popular destination during First Friday events. Studies began with a cinematic zoom of the site to examine the disruption of the city grid that Southwest Boulevard creates. Each layer of the zoom was stacked and translated to a three dimensional form. The interlocking forms and interesting spatial conditions became a key concept referred to as ‘nesting spaces’. These spaces began to create sequences of compression and release. This spatial tension is enhanced through the use of glazing to allow increased awareness of spatial changes and by the pushing and dropping of ceiling and floor planes.
