Men

With five returning letterwinners from a team that notched two wins in 2007, the Kansas men’s cross country squad has high hopes for the 2008 season.

“We’re definitely excited about the people we have returning,” head coach Stanley Redwine said. “We’re going to be led by Bret Imgrund. He’s been really doing well, and hopefully he’s going to lead the team in doing great things this year.”

Imgrund, a junior from Shawnee, Kan., finished at least third on the team in five of the six meets last season, including a runner-up finish at the Kansas State/Kansas Duel where teammate and two-time All-American Colby Wissel was the winner.

With the departures of Wissel, All-American Paul Hefferon and fellow graduating seniors Patrick McGowan and Jason Schweitzer, Imgrund will be looked to for leadership this season.

“I think any time you lose two All-Americans, you definitely have to have someone step up and do a great job,” Redwine said. “It’s an opportunity for others to lead.”

14

Nick Caprario had a solid freshman season, and looks to have repeat success in 2008. The sophomore from Kearney, Neb., competed in all six KU meets last year. In his debut at the Bob Timmons Classic, he delivered a 17th-place finish and followed that by placing a career-best sixth at the Kansas State/Kansas Duel.

Caprario went on to finish sixth on the team at the Big 12 Championships and concluded his freshman campaign by recording the fifth-best KU time at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships.

“As a freshman, Nick had a really good year,” Redwine said. “Now that he knows what to expect and how to season himself, we’re expecting him to step up and do a great job. When we’re talking about filling in for some of the seniors that are gone, Nick is going to be one of our main people this year. So we’re looking forward to him being successful.”

Dan Van Orsdel also competed in every event for the Jayhawks in 2007, placing anywhere from third to seventh on the team throughout the year.

The sophomore from Minnetonka, Minn., turned it up a notch at the end of the season, finishing third on the team at the Midwest Regional (71st overall) with a personal-best 10K time of 32:11. Van Orsdel turned in his best finish (eighth place) and a career-best 5K time of 16:27.2 at the Kansas State/ Kansas Duel.

Redwine’s 2008 men’s squad features just one returning senior, Victor Chesang.

best performance of 2007 at the Kansas State/Kansas Duel, where he placed 16th.

Levi Huseman, a junior from Tonganoxie, Kan., ran a career-best in the 8K last season at the NCAA Pre-Nationals. His best finish was 13th place at the Kansas State/Kansas Duel.

The performances of both Huseman and Chesang will be key to how good the Jayhawks are this year.

Redshirt freshman Clay Schneider also enters the KU roster, along with ten other newcomers. The fresh faces hoping to boost the Jayhawk lineup include freshmen Josh Baden, Sam Bird, Greg Bussing, Kaleb Humphreys, Diego Ladron, Sean Proehl, Don Wasinger and Zach Zarda as well as transfers Isaiah Shirlen (junior) and Brock Ternes (senior).

“Everyone has a role,” Redwine explained. “With the new people that are coming in now, there is definitely something expected of them. I think in order for the team to succeed, some of those guys have to step up and produce immediately. If we have to redshirt some of the others we can, but I think that there are some of them that can come in and contribute to the team right away.”

With a good balance of veterans and underclassmen, KU looks to have the necessary pieces to make another run at an NCAA Championships appearance in 2008.

“We have to be hitting on all cylinders,” Redwine said. “I think in order for that to happen, we have to have good leadership and we need everyone else to do their job. We’re looking for guys to come in and step up, and for our underclassmen to be good leaders.”

Women

Hopes are high for the 2008 KU women’s cross country team. The Jayhawk women return nine letterwinners with only three departures and look to improve upon back-to-back 11th-place finishes at the Big 12 Championships.

“We have a little bit more experienced team this year with the women,” Redwine said. “We’re looking for them to place better this year than they did last year, when we had a young team. I think overall our women’s team will be a better program.”

Leading the way for KU will be Lauren Bonds. The junior from Hutchinson, Kan., was the team’s No. 1 runner in every meet she competed in last season. She earned all-region honors with a 25th-place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships.

Bonds placed third at the Bob Timmons Classic and turned in a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Pre-Nationals. At the Big 12 Championships she placed 30th, a career-best conference finish.

“Lauren has done an excellent job for us,” Redwine said. “She is a great competitor. That’s one thing that she has. She’s able to compete and go beyond expectations. In saying that, there are other teammates (of Bonds) who will definitely fill the gap and do well.”

Amanda Miller made a splash as a freshman in 2007, and looks to do more of the same this year. The sophomore from Overland Park, Kan., competed in all six KU meets last season, contributing to the scoring effort in five of those six meets.

Miller finished 14th in her debut at the Bob Timmons Classic and placed a career-best 10th at the next meet, the Kansas State/Kansas Duel. She finished 38th at the NCAA Pre-Nationals and turned in a personal-best time at the Midwest Regional (22:23) to finish in 96th place.

“Amanda is quite a competitor,” Redwine said. “What it comes down to is her knowing she can do it throughout the race. Last year was a new distance for her, and towards the end of the season she figured out that she could do it. She went out and did a great job for us at the end of the season, and she’ll do the same this year.”

Alison Knoll returns after being a consistent No. 5 runner for the Jayhawks in 2007. The junior from Shawnee, Kan., placed 11th at the Kansas State/Kansas Duel and finished 61st at the NCAA Pre-Nationals. Knoll saved her best for last, recording a personal-best 6K time of 22:25 at the Midwest Regional.

The lone senior on the roster this season is Megan James. A Kansas City, Mo., product, James participated in every one of the Jayhawks’ 2007 meets. She finished seventh on the team in five of the six meets and placed sixth on the team (13th overall) at the Kansas State/Kansas Duel.

Two other returning juniors for the KU women are Kellie Schneider and Cassi Sokol. Sophomores Kaitlyn Coen, Claire Hall and Riley Wertenberger are the rest of the Jayhawk returnees.

Redshirt freshman Kara Windisch and freshmen Amanda Akin, Laura Nightengale, Lindsay Schaefer, Rebeka Stowe and Devin Wiegers also look to add depth for KU this year.

“It has to be a total team effort,” Redwine said. “I’ve never been one to single people out and say that the season depends on their performance. The team has to do well, and in order for the team to do well, every individual has to do their part. That’s what we’re looking for.”

With nine returnees and only one senior in 2008, the future looks bright for the Kansas women’s cross country team.

“Last year was a learning experience for them, being a very young team,” Redwine said. “The athletes know what’s expected of them, they know how to season themselves, and they know how to race. They are in better shape a year later, they’re more mature, and I think they will do a better job.”

“When it comes down to the rest of the conference and the rest of the nation, they’re thinking the same thing, so we really have to step up and do a good job.”
