Here are some of the best: • Tawhiti Museum and Traders & Whalers has been repeatedly judged one of the country’s best museums, and has to be experienced to be believed. SCALE NEW HEIGHTS
If you’ve got a head for heights, here’s a few opportunities to get a bird’s eye view of Taranaki: The Hawera Water Tower, built in 1914 as a defence against fires which ravaged the town, has 215 steps leading to spectacular views over Hawera. The tower is open daily – contact the iSITE at its base. 55 High St, Hawera. Paritutu Rock, the sharp volcanic outcrop alongside Port Taranaki, is also scalable for great views of the coast, mountain and New Plymouth city. Wear sturdy shoes. Centennial Dr, New Plymouth. Of course for the best views of the region, head up for a hike on Mount Taranaki. The Dawson Falls, Stratford Plateau or North Egmont access roads lead you to visitor centres or the historic Mountain House, and many short and long walks beyond. Go prepared though, conditions can change very rapidly.

Taranaki has been known as the Garden of New Zealand since pioneering days, and offers a wide range of public and private gardens and parks.
