A Mythical Mountain
Like so many great stories, Taranaki’s begins with a love affair. Mount Taranaki once stood in the centre of the North Island alongside the mountains of Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. Taranaki fell in love with pretty Mount Pihanga and constantly battled with Tongariro for her heart. After losing a particularly heated battle Taranaki was banished to the west, carving the Whanganui River in his wake. These days the 2518m volcanic peak, which last erupted in 1755, offers adventures through untouched bush and alpine environments. To get the full story head to the Department of Conservation Visitor Centres at North Egmont or Dawson Falls mountain access roads, or the iconic Stratford Mountain House. Even the drive around the Mountain’s base will connect you with many of the region’s stories, as well as welcoming towns, cosy cafes and other points of interest. Whatever adventure you choose to have on mythical Mount Taranaki, be prepared for the rapidly changing weather conditions.

Walking and cycling adventures Discover more of Taranaki on one of the region’s many trails. Covering every corner of the region, Taranaki’s walkways offer everything from a quick coastal stroll to an epic alpine adventure. New Plymouth’s 13km Coastal Walkway is a great place to start, while at the other end of the spectrum is the Pouakai Crossing, a spectacular 19km one-day walk on the slopes of Mount Taranaki that is rapidly becoming an iconic experience. The Mountain offers many opportunities to get back to nature, from eerie goblin forests to spectacular waterfalls, all with stunning views. Over 200km of walking trails mean there are walks to suit every level of fitness and enthusiasm. Pick up a guide to many of Taranaki’s top walks at the region’s i-SITE visitor centres or www.visit.taranaki.info.

Cyclists have just as many opportunities to get out there, from urban trails throughout the region to the fantastic family-friendly Taranaki Cycle Park at Bell Block, which offers a velodrome, closed road circuit, world-class BMX track and range of kids’ trails. Lake Mangamahoe Mountain Bike Park is home to a rapidly growing trail network spanning cross-country and downhill riding, with weekly events to help get you into the scene. The iconic round the mountain ride – a 150km circumnavigation of Mount Taranaki – passes through rolling countryside and is a must do for the passionate road rider, particularly the annual race in late January. For the really committed rider, the epic Forgotten World Cycle Trail links Taranaki to the central plateau over a challenging but spectacular 180km, very little traffic and the welcome sight of Whangamomona and its iconic hotel at the half-way point.
The Garden of New Zealand With its rich volcanic soil and warm environment it’s no wonder that Taranaki has been known as ‘The Garden of New Zealand’ for over 150 years. Early settlers coined the term in the region’s earliest marketing material, and these days the gardens even have their own festivals. Photos: Rob Tucker
The annual Powerco Taranaki Garden Spectacular attracts thousands of garden lovers to the region every spring, showcasing more than 40 of the region’s best gardens along with a vibrant event and education programme. On at the same time is the large and wonderfully eclectic Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival, which captures even more Taranaki gardens, along with vintage tool and machinery collections and work by local artists. Te Kainga Marire, one of only a handful of NZGT 6-star rated gardens in New Zealand, is a wonderfully intimate native garden, while Pukeiti, a 360-hectare rain forest garden nestled into the foothills of Mount Taranaki is renowned for its rhododendron collection. New Plymouth’s Pukekura Park and Tupare Gardens are other favourites, and along with Stratford District’s Hollard Gardens and Hawera’s expansive King Edward Park offer spectacular displays of native and exotic specimens that are well worth exploring at length. A comprehensive guide to Taranaki’s many parks and gardens is available free from the region’s i-Site Visitor Centres or from www.visit.taranaki.info
Museums of almost everything Discover Taranaki’s stories through one of its many museums.
An arts destination The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/ Len Lye Centre is one of the country’s coolest destinations, with stunning architecture, spectacular art, interesting events and a creatively vibrant neighbourhood. It’s not to be missed. The centre is a showcase of pioneering film and kinetic sculpture artist Len Lye, and boasts an ever-changing series of exhibitions that span his work and that of top contemporary artists from around New Zealand and the world. The surrounding arts precinct features a growing number of galleries, cafes, boutique fashion and accommodation. www.govettbrewster.com Throughout Taranaki you’ll be able to sample the works of the region’s artists. Start with Stratford’s Percy Thomson Gallery or Hawera’s Lysaght Watt and explore from there, or check out the Taranaki Arts Trail or Oakura Arts Trail, or just explore the region’s stunning street art and outdoor sculptures. Pick up a free Museums and Galleries Guide from one of the region’s i-SITE Visitor Information Centres or download from www.visit.taranaki.info Photos: Patrick Reynolds/Rob Tucker
Start at South Taranaki’s incredible Tawhiti Museum, a short drive from Hawera, and regarded as New Zealand’s best private museum. Allow at least half a day to explore the hundreds of life-size models and exhibits and thousands of implements and artefacts of Taranaki’s past. Don’t miss the Traders & Whalers ride – it has to be experienced to be believed. New Plymouth’s Puke Ariki is also a great place to dive into Taranaki’s natural, geological and human histories, as well as a range of regularly-changing exhibitions and events that lift the lid on specific aspects of the region’s culture. The region offers many more eclectic museums and galleries. From Inglewood’s Fun Ho! Toy Museum to Hawera’s Elvis Presley Memorial Record Room; Taranaki Pioneer Village in Stratford to Patea’s Aotea Utanganui Museum of South Taranaki to the Manutahi Taxidermy Museum, there are many ways to sample the more unique aspects of the region’s past. The Forgotten World Highway
Over thirty points of interest line the route, and it’s worth taking a day or two to explore the 155km journey as it traverses saddles and passes through the Tangarakau Gorge and farmland battling with the ever-encroaching native bush.
Tracing ancient Maori trails and pioneering farm tracks from the central North Island to Stratford, the Forgotten World Highway is New Zealand’s oldest touring route.
The main settlement is Whangamomona, first settled in 1895 with a population of 300 at its peak. Now home to around 30 residents, the village is centred on the Whangamomona Hotel, which offers accommodation and hearty meals for locals and travellers alike. Whangamomona declared itself a republic in 1989, complete with its own presidential election, passport (which can be obtained from the Hotel) and iconic Republic Day held every second year in January. The Forgotten World Adventures rail cart excursion, and new pedal-powered option, is opening this unique area to new visitors, as is the growing range of walking and cycling routes and accommodation options in the area. Pick up a copy of the Forgotten World Highway Touring Route Guide from a Taranaki i-SITE Visitor Centre or download from www.visit.taranaki.info

Surf Highway 45 The 105km Surf Highway 45 traces the coastline from New Plymouth to Hawera, following a path well worn by intrepid surfers in their hunt for the perfect wave. ‘The Coast’ is home to more than just surf, with many cozy cafes, art and craft studios and eclectic shops in the small towns that add interest to the journey.
Photos: Rob Tucker
There are plenty of opportunities to tap into the Coast’s history, from the substantial Koru Pa inland from Oakura to the wreck of the SS Gairloch at the end of Timaru Road to Te Ngutu o Te Manu, once the base of revered Māori warrior Titokowaru, and the Cape Egmont Lighthouse and nearby museum. Back Beach, Oakura, Opunake, Kaupokonui and Ohawe all offer the chance to wander on a sandy beach, swim, fish, or have a barbeque, and there are countless surf breaks in between. The best way to explore the Surf Highway is to load up the car with the surfboards and a thirst for adventure and follow the road. North Taranaki N
orth Taranaki is an attractive mix of beaches, golf courses, art and crafts, gardens, walks and sites of historical significance from Maori and European settlement.
Whitebaiting and fishing are popular in Mokau and many visitors arrive to either kayak or cruise the Mokau River. The bush along the river bank retains much of its original splendour.
The coastal retreat of Awakino is the perfect place to relax with beautiful west coast beaches on tap. The mouth of the Awakino River provides some excellent breaks for surfers and the river itself is prized by anglers. Go hunting, tramping, eat some whitebait and head to the local pub to share tales from your day.
Just north of Urenui is the Whitecliffs Walkway, which follows the route of the Kapuni to Auckland gas pipeline for 14km. See dramatic white cliffs, the Three Sisters rocks, and the historic Te Horo stock tunnel. Check the tides if you’re planning a beach walk. The walkway is closed during lambing season from 1 July to 30 September.

ukekura Park is the jewel in the crown of New Plymouth’s urban spaces, and is the venue for many events including the annual TSB Festival of Lights in summer. One of Taranaki’s Gardens of National Significance, the well-loved park is a 52ha haven of native bush with a glorious lake and is adjacent to Brooklands Park with its natural amphitheatre music bowl and zoo. Pukekura was used as movie location set for The Last Samurai starring Tom Cruise. The cricket ground doubled as the parade ground where Japanese troops were trained in the 2003 film. The New Plymouth district is blessed with recreational areas: 100 parks and reserves, 13 beaches and 60km of walkways.

TAKE EXTRA CARE Mt Taranaki is renowned not only for its beauty, but also for its everchanging weather. Visit the Department of Conservation or i-SITE Visitor Centre for advice before you decide to hike to the summit, or hire an experienced guide.
M
t Taranaki and Egmont National Park have more than 200km of walking tracks and over 300,000 outdoor enthusiasts visit every year to enjoy the clear streams, mystical forests and breathtaking views. There’s a range of tracks from a 15-minute jaunt to a multi-day hike around the mountain.
Mt Taranaki THIS ICONIC MOUNTAIN INVITES WALKERS AND CLIMBERS TO DISCOVER ITS NATURAL BEAUTY.
According to Maori legend, the mountains of Taranaki and Tongariro were both in love with pretty Mt Pihanga. Taranaki fought Tongariro to win her heart, but was defeated and banished to the West Coast, carving out the Whanganui River as he went. There he sits silent, looking back towards his lost love. Climbing Mt Taranaki is recommended only for the fit and well-prepared as it takes five hours to ascend and three hours to descend.

WAY OF NATURAL ADVENTURES, INCLUDING MOUNTAIN WALKS, LUSCIOUS GARDENS AND STUNNINGLY SCENIC LAKES SUCH AS ROTOKARE AND ROTORANGI.
Heading west from the area’s main town of Stratford will take you to the Stratford Plateau, the highest of the three roads into Egmont National Park, and the gateway to numerous walks and the Manganui ski field. Heading east leads you to the 150km long Forgotten World Highway which connects Stratford and Taumarunui and is one of New Zealand’s most iconic highways. New Zealand’s oldest heritage trail, this scenic route winds over four plateaus. A highlight is the 180m-long single lane Moki tunnel.

Inviting Inglewood
I
nglewood sits just below the forested fringe of Egmont National Park and is a good place to stock up before heading out on one of the many walking tracks. Children – and adults – will be enthralled by Fun Ho! National Toy Museum which produces classic, handmade, aluminium sand cast toys. Watch toymaker
Richard Jordan at work at the foundry furnace. You will find a cottage garden, scenic reserves, Californian redwood trees, golf club, high ropes adventure centre and wildlife park where you can enjoy lots of animal cuddles here. Venture to picturesque Lake Mangamahoe for walking and mountain biking with great views.
Stretch your legs and explore the historic sites and scenic walks along the way. There are magnificent views of Mt Taranaki to the west and Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro further away to the east. Other highlights are Mt Damper Falls, several 4WD tracks and the tiny, rustic settlement of Whangamomona, which declared itself a republic in 1989.

Hawera
Hawera
Hawera Hawera is the largest town in South Taranaki and an important service centre for many of the district’s key industries, including one of the world’s largest dairy factories, Fonterra’s Whareroa site. The name Hawera means breath of fire, which is quite apt given the town has endured three devastating blazes – in 1884, 1888 and 1912. To make fire-fighting easier, the Hawera Water Tower was built in 1914. You can climb the tower for great views.
on’t miss climbing up Hawera’s historic water tower, ascending Mt Taranaki’s famous peak (but check with the i-SITE Visitor Centre first), or watching history come to life through the realistic models at Tawhiti Museum. Just a short drive out of Hawera, Tawhiti is widely acclaimed as the best private museum in the country (check opening times).
