THE WORLD WITHIN OUR REACH ENERGIS ING O UR F UT UR E

A Showcase of New Zealand’s Extensive Oil and Gas Industry Capabilities

MISSION: POSSIBLE In December 2010 Venture Taranaki, the Regional Development Agency for New Zealand’s foremost energy province, released The Wealth Beneath Our Feet, a report that for the first time defined the full economic impact of the oil and gas industry to New Zealand’s economy: $2.5 billion to national GDP and employing 7,700 FTEs. The report identified that if our oil and gas and support sectors were to extend these figures, a more collaborative approach to industry growth was required. One of the responses has been the www.energystream.co.nz website, developed by Venture Taranaki in partnership with New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. The heart of EnergyStream is a comprehensive database of the extensive capabilities of the New Zealand industry. This publication – the New Zealand Oil and Gas Industry Capabilities Directory – is an overview of those capabilities. New Zealand is one of the world’s most attractive investment locations for oil and gas exploration. With a supportive government - at both regional and central levels – progressive permitting structure, an established and innovative industry, boundless exploration potential, talented people and an unbeatable lifestyle, New Zealand is well and truly open for business. Right behind the industry, but at times overshadowed, is an exceptionally talented multi-disciplined supply chain. This document is a celebration of the innovative companies and the immense capabilities resident within that sector. While this sector, and indeed the industry itself, is primarily centred on the Taranaki region, an emerging hub and spoke network is enabling that expertise and experience to ensure best practice and lessons learnt in Taranaki are supporting new exploration regions throughout New Zealand. There is also increased scope to extend that flow of ideas and services internationally. For over half a century New Zealand companies have worked alongside some of the biggest global names in oil and gas, and have demonstrated a relentless commitment to precision, innovation, health and safety best practice, and responsiveness. Now is the time to take that approach to the world, and ensure New Zealand, its people, and its companies are at the forefront of the oil and gas industry. This publication demonstrates that New Zealand’s people and supply chains are ready. It is time for our oil and gas industry, and the companies profiled in the following pages and online at energystream.co.nz to stand up, work together and drive the sector and the national economy forward. Stuart Trundle Chief Executive, Venture Taranaki

NEW ZEALAND –

ONE OF THE TOP FIVE COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD FOR INVESTMENT IN PETROLEUM EXPLORATION (Source: Fraser Institute Global Petroleum Survey, 2011)

From a global perspective, New Zealand is a frontier oil and gas location. The country’s open, low risk and straightforward permitting process and proven exploration successes have resulted in the generation of significant ongoing momentum around the petroleum industry. New Zealand has: • Significant petroleum potential • Underexplored basins • Straightforward permitting • Readily and freely available seismic and interpretive data for interested oil and gas investors • A safe, stable economy • Democratic, non-corrupt politics • A Government committed to ensuring that New Zealand is a highly attractive global destination for such investment • An experienced, capable oil and gas supply chain, support industry and infrastructure.

that propelled the nation into the modern era of petroleum. Proactive marketing of oil and gas opportunities by the Government and an attractive fiscal regime has seen the arrival of major international petroleum companies looking at further exploration. The oil and gas industry in New Zealand today is extremely active. There is an established infrastructure, including gas production and storage facilities, specialist port facilities and pipelines that transport gas throughout the North Island. Working alongside international organisations, Taranaki companies have evolved skills, relationships and knowledge One of the oldest oil fields in the world is still producing oil. The oil and gas industry is critical to the security of New Zealand’ s energy sector, supplying gas to power stations and a newly completed LPG production facility, plus a key component of the country’s export base through supply to significant value-adding companies and gas users such as Methanex and Ballance Agri-Nutrients. Partnerships, technologies and new environmental developments are integral to the future success of a contemporary oil and gas industry that is part of a balanced energy portfolio.

EXTENSIVE PROJECT INVOLVEMENT THE NEW ZEALAND OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN PROJECTS OF WORLD CLASS STANDING. TARANAKI’S SUPPLY CHAIN CONTRIBUTED SIGNIFICANTLY TO THESE SUCCESSES.

KUPE FIELD The Kupe Field became operational in early 2010. It is a critical part of New Zealand's energy infrastructure. At production peak, the gas produced from the Kupe Field will meet 10 to 15 per cent of New Zealand's annual gas demand and 50 per cent of New Zealand's LPG demand. Production is forecast to continue for the next 15-20 years. • Discovered in 1986 (offshore) • Project partners; Origin Energy, Genesis Energy, Mitsui E&P Australia, New Zealand Oil & Gas (NZOG) • Components: • Three production wells up to 3.8 km in length

• Onshore production station

• Unmanned offshore platform above the production wells

• Gas pipeline from production station to Kapuni

• 30 km subsea pipeline to bring raw gas and liquids from the

platform to the shore

Port Taranaki.

• Subsea 'umbilical' carrying utilities such as fibre optics between the platform and shore More than six million man hours were expended during construction, with a strong commitment to safety maintained throughout.

DURING THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE OF KUPE NEW ZEALAND COMPANIES WERE AWARDED NEARLY THREE QUARTERS OF THE OVERALL PROJECT CAPITAL EXPENDITURE THAT THE NATION HAD CAPABILITY TO TENDER FOR. THIS LED TO EXPENDITURE IN NEW ZEALAND OF APPROXIMATELY $600 MILLION. THIS ACHIEVEMENT WAS RECOGNISED BY AN AWARD PRESENTED TO ORIGIN ENERGY BY THE INDUSTRY CAPABILITY NETWORK OF NEW ZEALAND.
