Taranaki Event Toolkit THINKING ABOUT HOSTING A CONFERENCE OR EVENT IN TARANAKI? HERE’S HOW TO MAKE IT A SUCCESS…
www.visit.taranaki.info
TARANAKI: JUDGED BY LONELY PLANET AS ONE OF THE WORLD’S TOP TWO REGIONS TO VISIT IN THEIR BEST IN TRAVEL 2017 AWARDS.
WHY TARANAKI? Judged by Lonely Planet as one of the world’s top two regions to visit in their Best in Travel 2017 awards, Taranaki is being placed on a growing number of travel wish lists. With its innovative architecture, cool cafes, dynamic coastal location and passionate locals, the region is also sparking the interest of conference organisers looking for a fresh and inspiring location where they can hold their annual event. Meld these two drivers together and there has never been a better time to hold your next convention or event in Taranaki. Let us surprise and delight you with what the region has to offer: unique – even breath taking – venues, excellent accommodation options within walking distance of the main conference location and memorable experiences for delegates and accompanying partners. Combine all this with the experienced and professional conference organisers at the recommended venue, and a solutions driven and committed team at the region’s Regional Development Agency, Venture Taranaki, and you have the recipe for an outstanding event.

TOTALLY ACCESSIBLE It’s easy to get to Taranaki. New Plymouth Airport has been judged one of the country’s best, and is just a 40-minute direct flight from Auckland, with 10 flights coming in daily across both Air New Zealand and Jetstar. From Wellington it’s a 45-minute flight with Air New Zealand, with 3 flights available daily, and from Christchurch it’s a 90-minute flight on one of Air New Zealand’s 2 flights daily. Origin Air also offer a limited direct flight service from Nelson. Taranaki is just a scenic drive away from many more parts of the country. New Plymouth is a 4.5 hour scenic drive from either Auckland or Wellington, with numerous spots to refuel with good coffee or discover points of interest along the way. It’s around 3-3.5 hours’ drive to Rotorua or Taupo, 3 hours to Hamilton or Palmerston North, and four hours to Tauranga.

OUT & ABOUT IN TARANAKI While you’re in Taranaki, make the most of the spectacular sights, sounds, adventures and tastes on offer. Whether you just have half an hour spare or a whole weekend, there’s plenty to make your trip unforgettable. We’ve listed a few itinerary ideas below, but if you are looking for more options, pick up our Taranaki Insider’s Guide from your local iSITE or www.visit.taranaki.info
NATURE • Taranaki is a nature lover’s paradise. Explore on your own or take a tour with Discover Taranaki, and experience exclusive access to some of Taranaki’s most interesting people and places, through a comprehensive selection of high-end package tours that showcase the region’s unique stories and personalities. A range of ‘Taranaki tasters’ – unique half and single day tours including guided walks, garden tours, agri-tours or art and cooking classes – offer a fantastic introduction to the region and are designed for the FIT visitor. Larger multiday tours are also available which allow visitors a more in-depth experience of the region. www.discovertaranaki.nz • Climb aboard a refurbished lifeboat and explore seal colonies, a marine reserve and the Sugar Loaf Islands with Chaddy’s Charters. The tour is one hour long but can take longer if you want to fish. www.chaddyscharters.co.nz
24 - Taranaki Event Toolkit
• There are many opportunities to explore magnificent Mount Taranaki, from the Department of Conservation Visitor Centre at North Egmont to board-walked routes to the sacred water source at Wilkies Pools, or more intrepid hikes into the pristine alpine environment and the much touted Pouakai Crossing, a stunning one-day walk featuring magnificent vistas. Top Guides, are the mountain specialists and offer a range of tours to suit all requirements from short walks to get the best photographs through to a strenuous summit climb. www.topguides.co.nz. If you don’t have much time, Paritutu Rock only takes 30 minutes and offers a beautiful bird’s eye view of New Plymouth.
• Drive up Mt Taranaki to the North Egmont Roadend and learn more about the mountain by stopping at the Visitor Centre. The roadend is about 30km from New Plymouth.
• Located just moments from New Plymouth’s CBD, the expansive Pukekura Park offers conference delegates everything from an early-morning run destination to a beautifully scenic coffee spot. Or take a drive and visit one of the many stunning gardens throughout the region including Tupare, Hollards and Pukeiti, where guided tours for any size of group can be arranged.
• There are many art galleries in Taranaki that are worth visiting. The Len Lye Centre and Govett Brewster Art Gallery, Percy Thomson and Lysaght Watt Gallery are just a few of what is on offer. Guided tours at the Len Lye Centre, New Zealand’s latest and greatest contemporary Art Museum are a great way to learn about Len Lye, one of New Zealand’s most influential international artists.
• Te Kainga Marire – Māori for the peaceful encampment – is a skilfully designed inner-city native garden that mimics New Zealand’s natural environment. Situated in a once weedy New Plymouth valley, Te Kainga Marire is now considered to be one of very few private gardens of international significance or six-star gardens as rated by the prestigious RNZIH New Zealand Gardens Trust. A fascinating tour including a ‘tasting’ featuring food and tea sourced from the native ingredients found in the garden is available for conference groups. www.tekaingamarire.co.nz
• Drive to the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge and then walk Taranaki’s Coastal Walkway until you spot Len Lye’s Wind Wand. This should take about an hour return or half an hour if you can get picked up at the Wind Wand.
• Learn how to surf like a real Taranaki local with a lesson from Daisy Day. daisyday@lostinthe60s.com • Make the most of our 20 golf courses in Taranaki, each with magnificent surroundings and stunning views. A great activity for a group, or just an individual getaway.

HERITAGE & HISTORY • Puke Ariki, New Plymouth’s waterfront museum, library and information space showcases the region’s history, from volcanic inception to the modern day by way of bloody land wars and a century and a half of pioneering innovation. Puke Ariki offer a fascinating historical walk through central New Plymouth with an experienced local guide. Covering key historical events, anecdotes and extremely colourful pioneering characters from the first settler’s arrival in 1841 through to the early 1900s, the 90 minute walk chronicles the turbulent past of New Plymouth city. www.pukeariki.com • Head out to Tawhiti Museum and Traders and Whalers – New Zealand’s best private museum and see the work of creator and artist Nigel Ogle. It features a world-class boat ride in the Traders and Whalers portion where you can experience what life was like in Taranaki in the early 1800s. The museum is about an hour drive south of New Plymouth in Hawera. www.tawhitimuseum.co.nz • Drive out to Whangamomona along the Forgotten World Highway and enjoy New Zealand’s first heritage trail, where early pioneers tried and failed to tame the New Zealand bush. Whangamomona is just over an hour drive east from New Plymouth. www.visit.taranaki.info
26 - Taranaki Event Toolkit
• Bridging both Ruapehu and Taranaki regions, Forgotten World Adventures follows the remarkable Forgotten World Highway, New Zealand’s oldest heritage trail, along an abandoned railway line, travelling over bridges, through tunnels and along old pioneering routes. The route can be explored via a 2, 4 or 6 man RailCart or pedalled on a RailBike. • Soak up some history at Stratford’s Pioneer Village www.pioneervillage.co.nz, or see NZ’s oldest wooden artefacts at Aotea Utanganui in Patea. www.southtaranaki.com • Newly opened and unique to New Zealand is the Hillsborough Holden Museum. This is an immaculately displayed personal collection of Holden cars and memorabilia ranging from 1949 to the latest models. A special feature is the 18-hole mini-putt course modelled on the legendary Mount Panorama race track. www.hillsboroughholdenmuseum.co.nz • Another wonderfully quirky offering is the Manutahi Taxidermy Museum which offers a fascinating collection of a different kind. www.facebook.com/Manutahi-Museum
